I won't be writing for gameriot for L4D2

So I'm sure you all have noticed I stopped writing for gameriot and I have my reasons for it. Basically back in Febuary I signed a contract to a small portion of the ad revenue that my blog generated (40%) to be exact. It wasn't much (between 100-150$ a month), and I enjoyed writing. However it took gameriot an absurd amount of time to pay me when I won the blog contests, to the point I had to email one of the higher ups numerous times just to get the blog contest payments. I didn't receive the may payment till september I believe, and that was after they mixed up the payments in the first place. The ad revenue share payments however, I only received one in july for febuary (there is a 6 turn around on payments after signing the contract). After that payment I never received another one and I was told they had no record of me even being an ad revenue share writer, even after I got promoted to admin the entire Left 4 Dead portal, which meant I would receive payment based on ad revenue for the entire portal and not just my blog.

I don't know how other writers experiences have been with gameriot, but other than dealing with kyle and slapnuts, mine has personally been extremely lack luster. Nothing is more frustrating than feeling like you are getting the run around, so I will no longer be publishing articles on this site, and will be writing exclusively for communityl4d.com.

Anyways if anyone wants to play l4d2 with me my steam email is thegreatmaxipad@playcs.com, feel free to add me.

-Craptor Out

Left 4 Dead Cinema - Visceral L4D [The Relaxed Edition Teaser]

This is a video compilation that I've made recording several different aspects of Left 4 Dead. It is the intro trailer to my upcoming Relaxed Edition video that I plan to be releasing in October. This video focuses on a more slower paced environment of Left 4 Dead. I made this video in hopes becoming a more mature video editor.

Enjoy the video and be on the look out for the final release of the Relaxed Edition.

A True Lan Tale

I'm lazy and have a large post coming some time this or next week to get everyone up to speed about what's been going on and why I've been gone etc.

In the mean time enjoy this great video:

[Quoted from alex on steam forums]

The moments you all have been waiting for. The anticipation is finally over. the true lan tale is finally here for your viewing pleasure. This video could not have been created without the help of Mike Flynn, Dustin Curtis , Daniel Still and of course Mr. Hunter Toth. Want to give a huge thanks to those folks through the lan tale journey and for some even the lan itself.

Team Hausens footage from intel lanfest Sacramento. all footage from the lan. http://lanfest.intel.com/

Here is the youtube link
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Osw_5nJ36Yw&fmt=22

and for those who enjoy some high quality madness or want to keep this video in your collections for the rest of your days then feel free to download the video here
http://www.filefront.com/14399497/lantale.wmv/

As i asume many people will bring up, the quality of frags and such are a little low in this video. I want to go ahead and apologize for that now. But then at the same time i want to mention it is not our fault that the people on the teams we played had lower levels of intelligence then a small child.

************************************************** ***********
The reviews are already pouring in

Rodger Ebert

Quote:

Alex is back with his best film ever - a rip roaring action adventure wrapped up as a fairy tale of sorts

Jeffery Lyles

Quote:

Just like 100-degree plus weather and muggy conditions, it's been a miserable summer movie season but fortunately Alex Kelmenson is ready to cool us off with a welcome refreshing dose of quality entertainment with his latest ingenious work 'A TRUE LAN TALE

Dan Jardine

Quote:

Damn good fun

Mike McGranaghan

Quote:

Smart, provocative, fun, and exciting...A TRUE LAN TALE is everything that Transformers 2 and G.I. Joe tried - and failed - to be.

So good day and enjoy the video.

So I've been following the making of Tucker Max's movie for a very long time, and finally a trailer has been released. Aside from slapnuts showing me a link from gawker about some leaked footage (lol who takes gawker seriously anyway), this is the first tangible material from the movie that has been released.

It wasn't an amazing trailer, but Tucker stated he didn't want to put the funniest jokes in the trailer. A couple of the scenes had me laughing out loud, however most people won't get the Scott Peterson joke (look him up and you'll understand why it is funny). Also the cool thing about this movie is they are doing a Premier tour across the US before the nation wide release on Sept. 25th. For 10$ it is a ******* steal, and worth going if not just for the schwag, Q&A session, and book signing.

One of the biggest reactions I've noticed from people is that they are saying this is a carbon copy of The Hangover. Ok it might be in the same vein of going on a road trip and getting drunk, but in the Hangover the movie is about the aftermath and putting the pieces of the puzzle that is the previous night together. IHTSBIH seems to take a different route and you get to see the entire adventure unfold throughout the movie instead of working backwards. The Hangover to me wasn't a "really funny movie" until the credits where they showed all the pictures of the previous night detailing the adventure.

Edit: My friend just messaged me this over facebook, and there are few people's whos opinion I respect more than his.

"Tucker Max looks like what hangover should have been, that movie was pretty mediocre"

Couldn't of said it better myself.

Also the website for the movie has gone live, and is pretty cool, and I chuckled reading over the bio for SlingBlade (Jesse Bradfords char). I also like the little Facts they have from the movie, such as "Scott Peterson killed his pregnant wife, but not in a funny way".

Now the funniest part about this to me is all the haters coming out of the woodwork to bash the movie.

One naysayer posted this little tidbit:

“The contents include nothing but women, beer, women, strippers, mad girlfriends, peeing in public, getting turned down, getting turned on, cursing, offending every race, religion and creed and oh yes, joking about Magic Johnson having aids.”

Wait, how is that supposed to be a bad review, that makes me want to see the movie even more. Sign me the **** up, I already bought a bunch of tickets to the premier at Penn State.

AvP Xbox Trailers

I was a huge fan of the old school AvP2 PC game, I even remember competing against fatal1ty and drax leading up to the CPL tournament where fatal1ty won the infamous AvP2 designed Ford Focus. The game was certainly a ton of fun, and had a very distinct adrenaline rush feeling to it. However, it suffered from very poor net code and made playing extremely frustrating at times. One of the first things I noticed when playing Left 4 Dead was how much it reminded me of playing the aliens in AvP2 (even though I was primarily a predator player, sup with locking on and instagibbing aliens).

Without further ado here is one of the newer trailers that I've seen regarding the game (I believe slapnuts has posted some other game play trailers as well)

Aliens vs. Predator at IGN.com

I really hope this game comes out on PC, as it is right up my ally of genres that I like. There is something about novel first person shooter spin offs that have more depth than just run and gun ala quake/cs (Hence my affinity for left 4 dead).

Expect some more articles in regards to this game from me as it certainly has piqued my interest.

Why Left 4 Dead's Matchmaking/Lobby System Fails

Every other game made by Valve ( to my knowledge) has this nifty little thing called a server list. With this list you can see how many players are in the server, your latency with that server, what map that server is playing and even descriptions of any special add-ons that server may be running. Now because you can also filter this list in all the ways listed above, it is quite easy to find a server that you will enjoy playing on right from the get go. Now to the real question... why does this not exist with Left 4 Dead?

The main reason I can think of, is that Left 4 Dead is not a drop in, play for a bit, drop out kind of game. It relies on 8 people starting the campaign together and then finishing said campaign (with the exception of the ever enjoyed rage quit). It is quite easy to see how the current server list implemented in the other games would not work with Left 4 Dead. But whoever said it had to be exactly the same?

Why is it not possible for a person to locally host a lobby (Think DoTA) with a name that would include that lobby leaders intentions. (as an example... a name could be "Blood Harvest, standard cfg, Noobs only") People looking to find a lobby (and eventually a game), would then be able to filter the game list by using these keywords or by just browsing. Upon everyone joining the lobby and looking to start the game, the lobby leader would have 2 options: a) Join a specific server (probably their own with their own specific configs/maps) or b) bring up a server list like we see in all the other games that would all obviously be empty.

As for the implementation of option a)... it is already in the game, but only through the use of inputting the search key through the console. What valve should do in this case, is just make a GUI change that allows you to do this through the menus, (e.g. Text entry box pops up when you choose "Join own server" and then you can input said servers ip/password). Not really a necessity but if it was to be used more, a feature like this would make it more known as well as more easy to use.

For the implementation of option b), all that should be done, is adding said server list to the lobby leaders menu. People who run servers would put key words in the info such as if it is running cevo.cfg or not, or what map or if it just vanilla L4D and then the lobby leader would sort until he found one deemed suitable. Extra features not found that would be probably be helpful if implemented would be an option to show the highest ping of anyone in your lobby. This would be to allow the lobby leader to see how acceptable of a server it is for the whole game, rather than just himself since the choice of server is entirely in his hands.

Now for the benefits of a system implemented in this way:

1) Back to the intro.... You can see which servers are running custom maps and choose to try them out. Upon entry anyone who does not have said map would download it just like any other valve game and then upon everyone finishing the DL, the game would start. This would eliminate the need for 3rd party sites to host peoples custom maps and would help the custom map scene flourish since it would be no extra work. Basically no one is going to play custom maps unless they actively go search for them on the internet, and they have no way to find other people willing to play them that are not already on their friends list.

2) You can choose what cfg's you want to play with. Want to play with a server where hunters can pounce for 50 dmg? Now you would ( or rather the lobby leader would) have a choice. Want to do the exact opposite? The choice is still yours. Want to practice cevo.cfg without having to go on IRC and find a scrim? Much much easier now.

3) Last but not least, no more joining servers that are unplayable because they are located in Australia and everyone in your lobby has a 400+ ms.

All in all, I really do think Valve needs to implement something like this, or something that accomplishes the same goals. Short of renting your own server, when trying to play a game, you have no choice in what configs the server that gets picked for you will be using, you cannot play custom maps just for fun with pubbies, and you cannot choose whether you wish to join a server where your latency will be respectable. If all of these things were reversed, Left 4 Dead would (IMO) become much more enjoyable as any frustration in regards to these problems would be removed, and also much more replayable since the ease in finding usercreated content would be increased by a quite a lot.

Comments?

Left 4 Dead Hunter - Visceral L4D [Hunter City Speed Run]

This is a Hunter video of myself completing a speed run of 3:13 in the Hunter City map. I was introduced to this map and challenged to a race by my friend, "The Immortal" and later got really interested in all the records set by other players on YouTube. The record to date that I saw being the highest was 3:14, but that was on the b3 version of the Hunter City and that user took a very huge shortcut in the beginning.

If anyone would like to race or challenge me on this map, or if they have a demo uploaded that beats my score, message me via YouTube and/or join my Steam group "Visceral's L4D Video Compilations" if you care to contact me there!

Sorry I haven't been around lately to post, I'm in the midst of a pretty big crisis irl. Basically my fraternity is being shut down by international for ridiculously dumb reasons and I just found out today I have 3 days to move out. Thankfully I have some very good friends who are giving me a place to stay/store my stuff for a few weeks but I still have to find a place to live for the next school. I won't be around at all until I get things figured out. Me and 39 other guys just essentially got royally ****** by some dick head alumni.

Anyways wish me luck hopefully I'll be back in action soon.

-Max "Craptor" Turner

ps if anyone wants to help contribute to the blog send me a pm and I will add you to the collab list.

Flaws with CEVO config... Part 2.

This one will hopefully be much much shorter than the previous one but hopefully will outline just as much. ( going to try and keep the ranting to a minimum).

Last time I talked about why I thought simply converting all the health packs to pills really was not that big of a change but in that article I also touched on pill spawns and such being random. I believe I was talking about one team spawning a tank with full pills and multiple molotovs where the other had no pills and one molotov. This is what I would like to talk about now.

So the problem in my opinion is that pill spawns as well as "grenade" spawns are still random. As I just mentioned this can either greatly increase or hurt your chances relative to the other team when it comes to fighting off a tank. A team with 2-3 sources of fire ( say a gas tank and 2 mollys) should really never even be touched by a tank, as all they have to do is block an entrance with fire and then run as far back as they can repeatedly lightning doorways on fire so the tank cannot pass. What this does is force the tank to turn into an AI and makes the entire encounter some what trivial.

On the flipside of this, a team with only one molotov basically HAS to hit it, or suddenly the tank becomes much more difficult (depending on whether the team has tier 2 weapons or not). For something as important as a tank spawn to be 80% decided simply by how many of your molotovs were spawned before the location of the tank should just not happen.

The solution to this in my opinion would be once again to just spawn specific numbers of pipes/molotovs in the safe room depending on which map it is. A map like NM1... maybe only a single molotov should be spawned and zero pipe bombs. A map like NM3 however... maybe 2 of each should be spawned. This would obviously require tuning but in the end hopefully make the game more consistent and much less chance based.

Now onto problems that I see with both this solution and the previous one ( of spawning limited amount of pills in the safe room). ... If there is no longer any random item spawns in the map then the survivors can rush much faster knowing that they do not have to check any of the rooms. While in my experiences it is not like it takes that much time, it would still make the game slightly easier for survivor (maybe not overall after these changes.. but still) which is what we need to be getting away from.

To solve this problem I really do not have too many ideas... one that pops up in my mind is to add new weapon spawn locations. In every map the spawn location of weapons is never off the beaten path, so adding maybe a single possible auto shotgun spawn in a closet or an m16 spawn in a room that is off to the side would at least make teams weigh the risk vs reward on checking these rooms and in most cases hopefully slow them up a bit when running through the map. A good example of this is the small room inside the first building on DT4 that has one of the three tier 2 weapons spawned inside. While virtually useless in this one occurence throughout the entire game, having spawns like this on map segments where you are not given tier 2 weapons in the starting safe room would make the game slightly more interesting in my opinion and is something that should potentially be looked in to.

My Favorite Ways to Grief People

So the only thing that is fun for me in L4D besides playing scrims and matches is griefing people. The whole new car smell wore off of pubbing with strangers and having fun about 3 months ago, so I had to find new ways to have fun in pubs.

Being the evil devious bastard that I am I have found many ways to ruin other players gaming experience, thus enhancing mine. So without further ado I will share with you all the ways I have found to piss off other players.

Aggro the witch on people.

If you pass pills to someone when they are going to crown the witch, she will aggro on them. Make sure to sit back and watch the witch as she proceeds to kill the person.

Flaws I see with CEVO config

After playing in the first 6 or 7 rounds of the CEVO tournament, there were several things that kind of popped out at me that did not really seem as good as they could or should be, at least regarding the cevo config.

First of all, let me outline what I personally think CEVO tried to accomplish the config so hopefully you can have a better understanding of where I am coming from. First of all, it was created to help reduce the randomness of the game. Obviously there are still random elements but finding pills in a more convenient place is still less of a deal then say, finding a med pack. And secondly, they attempted to make it more difficult for survivors, which is obvious. From the guaranteed tank spawns to the reduction of medpacks it would be quite difficult not to see this.

Now here is where I think they got things wrong:

1) Switching all medpacks to pills. The purpose of this was to help the infected actually be able to lower the survivors health bonus. Sans config, you could theoretically down a person twice and have them heal up and pick up a new kit... and they are still sitting pretty with a 190 hb. So while this medpack-> pill change does help with that ( since if they do use a medpack there is nothing to replace it) IMO it does not go nearly far enough.

In all but one match I have played, if we stopped the survivors it was because we 4capped them, rather then just down them so many times that they eventually grayed out and then died. The reason being is that the addition of so many pills across each level always allow the survivors to continue pushing at a regular pace. Assuming you have killed the tank, it is not uncommon to push 25% or so of the map (depending on which map) without even the help of a pipebomb. That leaves 3-4 attacks basically to end it in certain cases which in my opinion is far too easy for the survivors.

The cause of this, like I said above, is that they never actually have to slow down. Even if you bring someone into the red so that they begin limping, they just pop pills and begin running again, now considering that on some maps you find 6-7 bottles of pills this can happen a lot. Now what this leads too is 4 people ending up in the safe room all with 1 hp yet "jacked" up on pills. Now because they never actually had to use a medpack their hb is still at least a 160 ( and in most cases 170+).

Not to repeat myself, but, obviously finding pills is the better substitute to finding medpacks... but is it? The only difference is that rather than actually using a medpack and replacing it you just never use a medpack at all. And then it comes down to the only way to kill someone is to 4 cap them, or hit an object over a single downed person with a tank to get them down to 3.

The problem with this is that games always come down to a single round. There is always high scoring rounds, or rounds where survivors have been stopped. What this leads to is games where a single severe mistake, that causes a single person to die (and in most cases the remaining 3 killed easily) decide the entire outcome of the match. And this would happen even if the team that made the mistake had outplayed the other team on every other map by walking in with full green hp + packs as opposed to full red (aka living on pills) + medpacks ( since they never actually had to use them).

While this would come down to personal opinion, it is my opinion that 4 maps of outplaying a team should be worth more than a single person making one single mistake.

Now to end the ranting and on to possible solutions.

Solution:

Remove all pill spawns from the map. For certain maps like NM3 give a certain amount of pills in the safe room, but remove all others from everywhere else.

If you as a survivor get downed on a map like NM1 then you deserve to have a severe disadvantage.. not just pop pills and run to the safe room like normal. You would be either forced to walk extremely slowly to the safe room which would make it much more difficult for your team and further allow the infected to pick at your HB. OR, you would have to heal and then any further damage on you would actually take away from the health bonus.

(Just as a hint or something, if you do say 80 damage to a person who was at 100hp with a medpack the healthbonus woukd only drop 8 points... if you did 80 damage to a person with no medpack, the Hb would drop 40 points in comparison. As you can see, in order to actually drop the health bonus, the medpacks have to be used which with the surplus of pills just never actually happens)

In my opinion, I do not really see a downside to this. Obviously it would make it more difficult for survivors, but even with the cevo config, it still is. Removing all the pills from the easier maps and giving only a limited number of pills for the more difficult maps would actually force teams to use their medpacks or decide if it is worth the risk to walk at a very reduced speed.

One other thing this would eliminate is the slight bit of randomness still left in the game. Currently while each team will have the same number of pills spread across the map, the actual locations are different. I have played teams where they spawned our tank with full pills and 4 molotovs while when it was our turn, we had no pills and one molotov ( both teams not having used any). If your team is put into a situation after the tank where pills are required yet you do not have any (simply because of RNG) when the other team did, that can potentially decide that round... which should not be the case.

Now because I have rambled far longer then I thought I would, I will save the other 2-3 gripes I have for a future blog. Any tips on my writing (which i know sucks) would be appreciated.

My Favorite Stand Up Comic Routines

This sort of stemmed from watching Carlin at Carnegie Hall with my friend Steph and getting into a discussion about our favorite stand up comics.

So it got my thinking as to what were some of my favorite rants from stand ups. Honestly I could to a top 5 with just George Carlin stuff because I think he is one of, if not the best, social critic of our time, but for the sake of variety I'll have diff comics on the list, in no particular order.

First off we have Jim Breuer with his infamous skit on alcohol, and as a raging alcoholic myself I can most certainly agree with this. ******* Jose just can't get along with anyone else

Next up we have Carlins rant of Football vs Baseball. Now don't get me wrong I don't think this is his best skit, but I just hate baseball so god damn much that I have a little place in my heart reserved just for this. Seriously though I could put every part of almost all of Carlins acts and they were be worthy to be on here. The saying goes any joke you've ever heard he said it first, and he said it better.

This one sort of makes the list mainly because of recency as I just watched Chris Rocks "Kill the Messanger" last week and well it is so god damn ******* true I couldn't help but post it. I've actually used the line "If you ain't ******* the way I'm ******* then get the **** out" to a girl who would **** me but not give head (BULL****TTTTT).

Ok I lied I couldn't only put one Carlin video on here, and without further ado we have his infamous rant on the 10 commandments.

Having had my fair share of pets (3 cats 1 dog) I can really relate to this one. Especially the pissing on every god damn thing in the house, including me once when I was sleeping.

Last but not least Eddie Murphy, and his take on sex. So true with the bull**** they say they want you to make love to them when they really just want rough.... ******!

Anyways please post some of your favorite stand up routines as I love comedy. IF YOU POST ANY **** FROM DANE COOK OR CARLOS MENCIA I HOPE YOU GET ******* AIDS FROM ****TING IN A PUBLIC RESTROOM AND DIE.

Custom Campaigns: Bound for Failure?

One of the few legit completed campaigns is Death Aboard (Which I will be play testing / reviewing sometime this or next week).

Seriously Valve your lobby system sucks ******* dick, you need to make the server browser the main option for joining games. You can still have a lobby option for people that want to make 8 man in house games, or a looking for 4 lobby for players who want to play other groups of 4 with their friends.

Oh ya in L4D2 news, they released a new melee weapon... the cricket bat.

WHOOPDI******* DO, you'd rather make useless novelty weapons for your sequel then put some god damn polish on your first game to make your paying customers experience much less frustrating.

Left 4 Dead Hunter - Visceral L4D [Part X - The Epilogue Edition]

The Epilogue Edition video that I promised is now up and ready to be viewed in HD.

As you can evidently see, I've had a lot of fun playing the Hunter and making video compilations out of it. I hope you all enjoy this as I will be using new styles of music and what not in the future video compilations..

This is a video compilation of all my favorite pounces from the past 6 months in all of my recent 9 videos. This video contains clips strictly of my favorite Hunter pounces as well as my favorite Smoker pull.

Enjoy!

Gamecast: CEVO .Survivor vs Ragequit

Like I said in my previous post, I think this match will be a toss up. I do think .survivor has a bit of an edge, as they have improved a lot over the past month giving many good teams a run for their money.

In the end it doesn't matter much as the winner has a date with depraved in the loser bracket semi finals, and I have a feeling they will be itching for redemption after a disappointing show vs eximius.

Hopefully the psC vs eximius match will get cast, but as of now the match hasn't been scheduled. The new psC is really the only top team eximius has yet to play, and psC has looked pretty hot through cevo.

What's on the Plate for July

I've been holding on to this for a long time, and will be releasing the videos this month of a couple tricks that me and Naac have discovered that are really really awesome.

Basically we found a way to instant kill survivors with a hunter/smoker in certain areas of maps, and it has nothing to do with death pulling. It utilizes the hunter push mechanic to piledrive survivors to their death. Trust me when I say that this trick is really really ******* cool, and there are some spots where it is pretty easy to pull off.

$20,000 Killing Floor Contest

:

Uhh seriously $20,000 for mapping? What the ****? I'm at a bit at a loss at this considering esports organizations are folding left and right but these guys have the money lying around to host a mapping contest that has a prize purse more than most competitions from any game.

I mean, I never personally played Killing Floor, and have heard good things about it, but I don't see the game having much legs for replayability or long term success (outside of its very affordable cost).

Shame there isn't a contest like this for a prominent esports game like cs, wow (arena), CoD, quake3, starcraft, wc3 etccc (Left 4 Dead duhhhhhh) as it would help breath life into competitive scenes.

Whatever, I just don't really see the end game move behind doing something like this, maybe there is something I'm missing. Chances are it is just a bad ploy to get more people playing the game again, but I don't think this is going to bring in many new players as anyone who was on the fence about buying the game probably did so anyway because of the price tag.
