3/11 Edition of Arenacast tonight at 8pm CST

This week on ArenaCast we recap the events that took place at the ESL Finals. On the show we have the usual cast of Keith Igoaf Trahan, JP moogle McDaniel, Nathan Kintt Quinn, Sam oplaid Lingle, and last but not least, Vance Serennia Phuoc.
Serennia will no doubt be answering to the rest of his crew about the performance in Hannover this past weekend. The cast will also discuss the state of the US WoW E-sports scene. Can we become as strong as we once were? Did we send the wrong teams? Can SK.USA, Team EG, and CompLexity compete at the top tier? Why the hell did EG run destro? All these questions will be answered tonight on the show.

So how do you tune in? Simple. Go to the link below and tonight at 8 p.m. CST this Ustream link will go live. Cant make the show? No problem. We post show replays 30m after the live recording on our website.
Preparing for WotLK

I woke up this morning in a hotel in Germany, getting ready to travel home tomorrow when I read the blog Realzz posted about the 3.0 patch incoming. I really hoped that it was just Realzz speculating, but when I followed the link to a Blue post, I was very disappointed.

I know people have mixed feelings and memories about the pre-tbc 2.0 patch. A month before the patch I transferred a Priest to Tichondrius to play with Notorious and more importantly play with Noktyn. I felt 2.0 was a bit lackluster in my eyes, and I feel this is due to the fact that our original 5man team made of Nurfed members (including Uro,Savor,Noktyn,Nisstyr,Abom,Adamlol,Ziot,Balroc,Engel) had been running 5v5s for so long on live realms since about the time we all hit 60. Adding in the fact that most of us were in the TBC alpha, the induction of Arenas for me did not overshadow the blatant lack of balance that was 2.0.

I will not stand on a soapbox (lolgameriotbox) and preach to the masses about how I feel 3.0 will do a lot of damage to tournament play, because I think everyone already realizes this. One thing to note, the teams with the most creative minds will succeed at these tournaments. Amazing theorycrafters will be trying to late-night queue against no name aussie teams as to not give away what they will be running at the next events. ESL has their online realm setup, and these players better pray that it is still online when 3.0 hits. Having to not only think up new specs, comps, but also deal with the gear difference will be a task only the brightest will be able to handle.

So I currently have a resto shaman in half tier6, and 2 s3/s4 priests. I am currently debating in my mind if I should spend the time (with the increased leveling speed) to prepare a Druid and Paladin for the 70-80 hike. If anyones interested in a PL group on Tich, let me know

(GOD DAMN THIS WAS HARD TO TZPE ON A GERMAN KEZBOARD)

MLG Commentary Critiques

So as I've been trying to travel home (24 hours in airports/planes so far yay), I've been reading every post I can about the quality of the MLG tourney. Obviously I'm most concerned with the commentary comments, so I think the best way to grab the constructive criticism is to post here (BOY THIS IS A TERRIBLE IDEA).

I want you guys to be honest, most of you posters have known me for a while either through playing on Tich, through the bg9 irc, or just from seeing me at prior events.

Some of the things I don't have control over however are:

a) My Co-commentator. He was hired to be the play by play, and I was going to fill in afterwards. I did have a lot more WoW knowledge and I think it showed with the little things he slipped up on.

b) Time in between matches. Again this isn't anything that I chose, there were some damn exciting matches you guys missed that I could hear (Inactive yelling/etc), and all I wanted to do was cut to them and cast the rest of the match. Most of the time when Rob was working on finding good Ask the Thread questions I was spectating in the other matches trying to get you guys updates.

c) Repeating information at the 'start' of each cast. Every time we take a break we were instructed to go over the rules of the tourney, the prizes (hp plugs), and each match.

One of the biggest questions I have for you is how we can correctly cater to the entirety of wow's vast skill level difference. I think we did go a bit too in depth with the class information over and over, maybe going over it once at the start of each day and highlighting what to watch for before matches would work better.

I was told that I did need to reexplain complex strategies (cc after pvp trinket, shatter combos, how nihi's team works) so people who didn't have 2000+ arena teams could follow along. I was reading on the aj site and that came up over and over (from the players who were on 1700 teams lol),

I will be again doing the commentary for Orlando and Dallas plus another tourney that I can't talk about yet. Obviously there isn't much time before Orlando to drastically change things, but any feedback from you guys would be appreciative.

I actually want to apologize to Serennia. Yea, I know this sounds pretty dumb, but as I was casting that first day after seeing the reactions and calling him out for 'nerd raging', I realized I wasn't any better than Ming was. I wasn't up there to drag names through the gutter for no reason and make up lies. After that first event I thought about it and instead critiqued their play style choices instead of the actual player's reputation.

So here you go, anything you want to say to me about the cast, say it in here. To get it out of the way, I was told what style shirts to buy, that they had to be solid color and I had to pick multiple colors so we didn't wear the same. I couldn't wear black/white/grey, so it limited my choices a lot. (My girlfriend wanted me to wear orangelol) Also I do know that I'm going bald slowly, so fire away at those comments if you feel you need to.

Mechanical coin-operated games

The video game industry as it exists today primarily sprang from two
independent sources. The first of these was the coin-operated amusement
business that began in the late nineteenth century at amusement parks,
boardwalks, bars, and bowling alleys and consisted of mechanical
devices operated by patrons who inserted coins to make the machines
work. Starting in 1948, the jukebox became the most profitable and important coin-operated amusement device, but the most important game was pinball.[1]

The pinball industry began in 1931 when David Gottlieb created the Baffle Ball machine, which was the second pinball machine but the first to be successfully mass produced.[2] The pinball market really took off in the 1950s during the post-World War II American economic boom.[3] The pinball business was responsible for the creation of the
production, distribution, and consumer channels used by the new video
game industry in its early days, and important American video game
companies such as Bally Manufacturing (est. 1932), Williams Manufacturing (est. 1943), and Midway Games (est. 1958 and purchased by Bally in 1969) were all established for the
creation of pinball and other coin-operated devices. In addition to
pinball, these companies created mechanical sports games, driving
games, and shooting games using light guns that were all forerunners of
video game genres.[4]

Following the Korean War, the strong American military presence in Japan also served to expand the coin-operated amusement industry into that
country. Because World War II had greatly depleted Japan’s
manufacturing infrastructure, the early coin-operated companies in
Japan were generally established by foreigners and imported American
products. As the Japanese economy recovered and coin-operated
amusements became popular, a large number of native Japanese companies
entered the business as well. Taito, founded by Russian Jew Michael Kogan in 1953, was the first important company to enter the business in
Japan, and it was soon joined by Service Games, founded in 1952 by
American Marty Bromley to bring coin-operated amusements to American servicemen in Japan and
later the biggest name in jukeboxes in Japan under the name Sega, and
Rosen Enterprises, established by American Korean War veteran David Rosen as an instant photo booth importer in 1954 and a manager of arcades
beginning in 1956. In 1964, Rosen instigated the merger of Sega and
Rosen Enterprises into Sega Enterprises, which began creating its own mechanical games in 1966 with Periscope,
which due to the high cost to import to the United States and Europe,
set the long-standing standard play price in the arcade of twenty-five
cents.

First electronic games!

At the same time the arcade business was taking hold, important
advances in electronics led to the creation of the first computers
between 1937 and 1945 in the United States, Germany, and the United
Kingdom. The early computers were giant mainframes that could take up
whole rooms and cost hundreds of thousands of dollars and, as a result,
were only found at top university research facilities and government
institutions. As the transistor replaced the vacuum tube and the
integrated circuit allowed for easier mass production, computers began
to shrink in size and come down in price, spreading across universities
and being adopted by businesses in the 1950s and 1960s. It was on these
mainframe machines that university students in the 1960s and 1970s
would design some of the first electronic games and establish most of
the basic genres still popular today.

Comp Swapping (and why it's needed)

After reading many comments on gameriot about wanting comp swapping to be removed, I think I need to put Team Pandemic's view on this issue in writing. As a manager of a team that has many star players, we of course were sad to hear that this tournament would not be following the normal WSVG setup of being allowed to use 5 players for a 3v3 match. On the plane ride over, I had a lot of time to think about this tournament and the way it was setup, and I personally have decided that I like the change.

World of Warcraft's arena system is very new, and even newer is its entry into eSports. We all know that WoW has a large number of flaws that need to be changed, and a large majority of these changes that would cater to the Arena players cannot be implemented due to the fact that we're not even breaking 10% of WoW's population. It just isn't a smart business move on Blizzard's end to make changes that will affect the casual player (cash cows).

This change to tournaments was very important if Blizzard wants to see star overall players emerge, instead of star characters. Kint is the best priest I've ever seen play, but what makes him our MVP in a lot of matches is the fact that he can play just about any class. Once Blizzard sorts out the issue of not having easy access to geared classes (account sharing/purchasing is a bad idea, I speak from experience), players will be able to swap classes with ease and learn how to play every class. Team Pandemic will probably start sending two teams to every 3v3 event with this change, and any player on these rosters will be expected to learn a large number of classes. The complaining about counter-comp'ing will start to dwindle once more balanced rules are put into play having to do with pre-match selection.

My suggestions which I will be emailing off to Blizzard/ESL/anyone who wants to listen will be the following:

1) Before any member of the team touches their computers, they need to submit their starting composition on paper to the head judge in secret.

2) After each round, the players must log out of their characters to the character select screen, leave their computers and head to a designated area for their team. They will have 2 minutes of planning time (which can be waved if the team is ready) to discuss what they want to run. The only people allowed in this 'huddle' area is the 3 members of the team on the roster, and a coach/manager (totally threw that in for me). By the end of this time, the team has to have a comp written down on paper, and this has to be handed to the judge as they make their way back to their computers. At this time the judges will verify that the teams are using their correct 3 classes, and the matches start.

3) The /who system needs to be disabled on the server (or clients)

4) An external client needs to be programmed (ala rupture) that saves client side settings (per class) into an online account, along with their bar setups (this can be accomplished with an ingame mod). This will speed up tournament setup time inbetween rounds/matches.

LOL WSVG

WSVG Toronto has come and gone, and along with it we lost our beloved low drinking age. This means our nightly activities are going to be a lot more hindered due to our younger members of teams.

SO - Nitrana and I have come up with a great alternative to going out and partying every night, the WSVG Ironman. We're not 100% sure on the rules yet and we need help deciding, but the basic idea is this:

1) We take submissions of games in 4 categories: PC, Console, Arcade, Real Life. Each of those will be split into two different genres Classic and Current. Example of Arcade games: classic-Tetris current-3rd Strike. Examples of Real Life are Poker, Beer (water lol) Pong, Air Hockey, Pool, etc

2) The games will be voted on and put in order lowest to highest. The highest in each category that we can get our hands on will be the games played.

3) Each team can enter 5 players total. Out of these 5 each player must play at least one game, but no more than 3. Team players have to be somewhat affiliated with their 'team'. I.E. Pandemic can grab any staff/players, but not Savor from Blizzard. Fnatic can grab any players on their team plus their guild leader since he's been with them constantly. The swedes can pick anyone with a sweeeedish accent or history.

4) In your team's first match-up in the bracket play, your team picks 3 potential eligible players. The opposing team picks one (or more, depending on the game) of these players, this/these player(s) must play the entire game bracket for your team.

5) Every game that it's possible in, there will be bracket play, single elimination. Top 3 teams in each game get 5-3-1 points. T

6) Two highest teams at the end of all 8 categories will face off in a final 5v5 match. TO BE DETERMINED.

NEED MORE RULE SUGGESTIONS

IF YOU HAVE A GAME SUGGESTION, TAG IT WITH THE TYPE. CLASSIC ARCADE, ETC.

On Scorpions: Part 2 (aka Dear Kow)

1. - Forcing a replay was not a "compromise", it was a punishment.
2. - Scorpids should have been a part of the normal tournament layout.
3. - Within reason, players should be allowed to mitigate the problems
brought about by Blizzard's poor response time when it comes to
equipment list changes.
4. - Punishing a team for doing something they shouldn't have had to do in the first place is questionable.
5. - Punishing a team for doing something your own organization allowed is
wrong (this is a slippery topic as details are still hazy as to who
said what).

1. Of course it was a ******* punishment, the compromise was they were not DQ'd. It doesn't ******* matter whether they had won or lost, if they were disqualified they would have had any and all prize and travel money forfeited. What's worse, the opportunity to replay your match, and prove you're better, or getting ******* sent home with dick and nothing.

2. And warriors should have mace smithing and be gnomes, and all healers should have Talisman of the Breaker (even more than paladins since the other healers don't have improved concentration aura). The tournament is not perfect and it's not your role as a player to go rectify it. You're basically ******* over other people.

3. No you shouldn't. It's not your responsibility to fix all the problems in the tournament. Should people be allowed to use their 5 to do a backdoor BF run to try and get a ToTB for their priest, druid, shaman, etc? If not where does it end? If you want to talk about slippery slopes, this is the true slippery slope, and completely subjective. The rules clearly state that you shall play with the gear/characters provided, and that includes the pets in your ******* stable. They gave you 3 choices, if you don't like them that's your problem.

4. What the **** is this supposed to mean. This is just a ******* excuse. Well we should have been able to use a scorpion because of points 2 and 3, so thus we're going to do it anyway no matter what you say. Are you joking?

5. Hamchook was told by the WSVG community relations manager that he would not be allowed to use a scorpion. This is in line with the WSVG's stance at previous events. By continuing to ask at the event, and to ask in generalities in fact, asking if he could tame a new pet, not a scorpion, he was attempting to confuse and disguise the situation in order to get what he wanted. There's quite simply no excuse for this at all.

Musical Chairs: WoW Edition

My biggest question about WSVG is not what pets people are going to have in LA, or whether gear will be changed, or if Pandemic will sweep for the year it's when will the retarded musical chairs bull**** stop.

No offense to the commentators, since they're trying to fill the enormous amount of dead air since WSVG can't keep the games on time, but watching people stand up and sit down in some sort of mental kung-fu sparring match is neither interesting, nor entertaining. Frankly from a spectators perspective it's stupid, and it makes the matches take far too long to be played, and I can't imagine it's particularly enjoyable for the players either.

Let's start with the solution. Before the match each side submits the 3 players they're going to be sitting down first to the admin. Those players are playing the first 2 rounds. End of story, no exceptions.

This provides a few benefits. First, setup time. No longer do you have to set up 7 people for the same ******* station. Do you realize how ******* irritating it is to have a match almost ready to go, and yet take another 10 minutes because *******#6 stood up and ******* #3 took his spot and now ******* #3's keyboard doesn't ******* work or he needs to set up his character or some other stupid ******* problem. Set up 3 people before the match starts, since you'll know who's playing, and that's it you're done.

Second, mismatches. I think one of the best finals ever was when Pandemic used the wrong comp, war/pal/priest against Insurrection's Druid/Lock/Mage. Looking just at the comp's Pandemic definitely didn't deserve to split those 2 rounds, but they did, and went on to win when they changed their comp to something more beneficial. It would also add more strategy to the matches, do I start with something safe like war/pal/priest or rogue/mage/priest, or do I go for something whacky like a 3dps team, or a hunter :O.

Also, it would show the versatility of players, imagine you have a team of only 3 players but one can play druid/pal/priest, one can play warlock/mage/spriest, and the 3rd can play warrior/rogue/hunter (HUNTER?????). Now despite only sitting 3 people there's limitless combinations, so even if the other team had 5 people, if each person could only effectively play 1 or 2 classes, they could still easily be countered by the other teams versatility.

I think overall finding some method to limit the retarded musical chairs match before the matches start would drastically improve the tournament, particularly with regard to the time factor which has been one of the biggest complaints with both players, and spectators (WHEN THE **** DOES WOW START? WHY ISN'T IT ON THE STREAM YET?).

On Scorpions

Dear Retards and BG5/Hunter Dickriders,

The WoW tourny client sucks dick and thus is basically a standard WoW install that connects to a special server. You're not supposedly to ******* leave Shattrath/Capitol cities. Warriors get DT too, but guess what they can't ******* use it because they have 375 Axesmithing. And they can't go retrain to mace for the same reason you can't go ******* train a new pet.

As for swapping comps in the rematch, if they're going to restart the whole thing at 0-0 it's obvious that you can then use your whole ******* team idiots. It's basically like the match never occured. If they played a quake rematch would people have to take the exact same paths, and get the exact same spawns or some other retarded ******* **** like that. No, they wouldn't.

Now XI you say, why do you have 2 warriors on the same server? Are you some kind of sadist who likes leveling warriors.

Leveling is like volunteering to get Aids, sure at first it was worth the money, but when you think about it for a minute you're basically ******* yourself.

Anecdotes aside, it's obvious to anyone with half a brain why I rerolled. Because 2 years ago I apparently unknowingly ******* failed at character selection. No I didn't make a troll, or even a troll of the Alliance, that's right you flipping *******, but I didn't make a known. When I was making my character I clearly should have broken out my ******* crystal ball and looked into the future and realized I'd be completely ******* inferior because I didn't make a race that looks like a ******* turd with a pumpkin for a ******* head.

Now one of you ******** is going to say, Gnomes were ALWAYS the best race. No they weren't you ******* revisionist ****. The Holocaust really did happen *******, and gnomes were pretty ******* ****ty. Let's look at gnome racials. 15 Engineering. How many things require 315 engineering. That's right 0. Not one ******* thing, real good racial. 10% intellect. **** yea now I can level up my weapon skills 10% faster. 10 Arcane resist. I RESISTED CS. WAIT. I DON'T HAVE ANY ******* SPELLS. And now, escape artist, the ONLY ******* REASON TO BE A GNOME MELEE CLASS. Instant, 1min cooldown, breaks all roots and snares. EXCEPT, EXCEPT IT WASN'T ALWAYS LIKE THIS.

Patch Changes Regarding EA:
1.09 - Casting time lowered - Instant
1.07 - Works on Nova and Frost Trap

That's right EA didn't work on frost nova or frost trap, and it had a ******* cast time. Want to get a snare off? Sit there and beat your dick for 1.5s not moving while you do it. Real ******* useful. Even when it did break nova. Get nova'd mage is channeling a poly, you channel EA. LOL YOU'RE POLY'D ANYWAY, NICE ******* COOLDOWN *******. In short gnomes were all around ******* awful.

In any case the reasons why I didn't roll a gnome are neither here nor there. The fundamental problem is racials are ******* stupid. So, how do we fix them? Easy, turn the idea of racials into the trade skill system. Each race has 1 active and 3 passive racials. Put all the racials on a vendor, or if you need to maintain lorelol just each faction can only choose their faction racials. In any case, your active racial costs 1500g. This is your EA's, stone form, WotF, etc. Your 3 passive racials cost 500g/apiece. This is your stun resist, stat bonus', rep bonus, etc. You still start off with the racials of your appropriate race, but now you can drop them and for a nominal cost (MONEY SINK!) you can improve your character,

Insert Class Balance Changes

Come on, does anyone actually buy into this ******* bull**** anymore. I've seen better balance changes on the cesspool known as the Blizzard forums, and yet this assclown claims he has ******* inside information. Let's look at a few of the retarded things he's floated so far.

Blind
is now a Physical effect with a cooldown of 95 seconds. Elusiveness
reduces cooldown by 15/30 seconds. Blind no longer requires a
reagent.

So every 1 minute a rogue can instantly remove someone from the battle for 8 seconds. WOW THIS IS A REALLY ******* GOOD IDEA. And to boot it can't be removed except by Divine Shield, BoP, or PvP trinket.

Fleetfooted
now passively increases your movement speed by 20% instead of 8%.
This effect does not stack with other movement increasing effects.

What enchant/meta does EVERY ******* PERSON WHO PVP's HAVE? That's right movespeed, because it makes that much of a ******* difference. But hey, let's give one class permanent aspect of the pack, seems like a good ******* idea amirite?

Felhound's Spell Lock is no longer on the Global Cooldown of the pet.

Are you high, or is this supposed to be some kind of ******* joke. The ****** pet already has a 4th tier ******* mage talent by default, but now it's not even on the global so while you ******* auto dispel someone you can spell-lock them too. Go eat a ******* dick.

Warlock Pets now gain a portion of the Warlock's Resilience, Spell Penetration, and Spell Hit.

In case you haven't notice, in addition to having a billion ******* resist, every ******* pet has a way to **** over melee too, except succubus, but no one uses that ****ty ******* pet anyway. Voidwalker takes less damage, felguard has evasion, and felhunter stacks a ******* demo shout on melee, even though the ******* warlock already has a 35 yard demo shout that lasts for 2 ******* minutes.

How about his stupid ******* ideas about melee. Because the game isn't enough about ******* castercraft and 3 range ******* facerolling the keyboard, we're going to nerf anti-healing affects, so it's easier for that lone healer to keep the retards up.

As for his moronic idea's about disarming. Newsflash taintlicker roots and snares are to melee what silence is to casters. If you ******* frost nova a mage or warlock, does it stop them from casting? No it doesn't. But do it to a melee class, and good ******* luck hitting anyone with an IQ above 1 when you're ******* rooted.

I never thought I'd say it, but I guess we've finally found the 1 person in the world more ******* retarded than Ming. And if you believe his claims that he's helped in balance changes, no wonder the game is a ******* 3rd term abortion.

How to Shoutcast WoW

This weekend you saw a variety of games being shoutcasted on the stream, and the shoutcasting ranged from amazing (SC) to absolutely ******* terrible (WoW CGS). Now everyone knows that WoW shoutcasting has been ******* miserable so far and it's been bashed an endless amount of times, so that's not really what I'm here to do.

The question I want to answer is why is WoW's casting so bad. I had an epiphany during the SC cast. Once the matches started the color commentary was basically over. A small leadup during the players early builds with speculation about what strategies they would use, but once the battle was met, it was pure play by play. The WoW announcers on the other hand feel the need to explain the most minute details DURING THE MATCH.

To make a comparison, the build up stage of SC is like the pre-match prep of WoW, aka before the gate opens. This is the time to explain what MS is, what stategies you suspect will be used, how other various skills work, the differences between the talents people have chosen, etc, etc.

Once the gate opens all we want to know is what the vulture's are doing, who's expo is going up where, why is he going carriers, oops, I mean. The important thing is when the gate opens for an arena match the commentators must revert to assuming that people know what's going on, and the basics of the game. Of course this assumes that the commentators know the game, the SC commentator was a SC player, and the same for all the good WC3 commentators.

To translate the SC analogy to WoW, once the gate opens we want to know who's attacking whom, who's being CC'd, any important cooldowns that are being used, etc.

Examples would include, 'The paladin is feared, that means he'll be unable to support his team'. This is clear concise and should provide enough information even to novices and non WoW players. Describing the effect of MS takes up too much valuable air time, and is extremely boring for anyone with basic game knowledge.

'The mage is sheeped, they're going to need to dispel him, or it's going to be tough to break this train'
'The priest is mana burning, if they don't stop him that paladin will be out of mana soon'
'They're going hard on that shaman, the paladin shielded early to avoid interruption'

These are comments that should be heard from WoW commentators, and hopefully for future events they'll be able to find people who have a lot of knowledge and really click, and the overall quality of the casts will improve.

This Is My Cave. There Are Many Like It (41 According To The BG Queue Screen) But This One Is Mine.

I fearlessly defend the cave day and night. If Horde were ever to take over the cave the horrors would be unspeakable. They could flood right into our capital cities and overwhelm them. So far it's been rather quiet today, but I must remain ready, they could come at any time.

How's your cave doing today.

Fragdolls aka Tits = Skill

What a ******* joke. I can't even stand to watch the CGS stream because of the incessant chattering of these 2 pairs of ******* tits with legs. You think if they were going to get no talent *****, they could at least get some attractive ones. I wouldn't let half of them suck my dick if they paid me. That and their commentary is ******* terrible. Listen ***** if it has a shield, it's a paladin, if not, it's a warlock. Not real ******* hard.

There's only one way to redeem this ******* stream. If you win you get to stick your **** down their throat to shut them the **** up.

Dear Brad

I know you're at Blizzcon so you can't be here for this moment, but I want you to know I was thinking of you when I became the first lvl 22 on GR. And that's after you cheated me out of 12 levels. Discordia > Nurfed 4 life.
