I am sure quite a few of you out there are enjoying Team Fortress 2. Hell I play it probably 4-5 times a week for hours on end. I love it. However, a few days before the game came out in beta, there was a under the radar mod that was finally released. Fortress Forever is the name, and it was PC Gamer's Mod of the Year in 2007.

I had been following this mod for a couple years now. At its core this game is a Source Engine port of Team Fortress Classic. Anyone who is a fan of TFC, or QWTF should check this mod out. It is the best Valve engine mod I have seen since Counter Strike and Insurgency. The game was built from scratch on the Source Engine, and unlike say CSProMod, it is already well polished and retail quality. The developers have done a incredible job capturing the essence of TFC and staying to true to the games roots; from conc jumps, fast paced action, and plenty of nades.

Yet at the same time the dev's have brought a lot of new features into the game also:

-engineer's rail gun chargers
-soldier's rocket has a greater hit box
-the heavy's mini gun has slightly reduced power and can overheat
-spy can sabotage engineered buildings, and now can cloak
+ a lot more

Almost every class, minus the medic, has some sort of tweaks to add balance or depth to the gameplay. Check out the Wiki entry to read up more on this.

The game was set for a release last fall and had to be rushed out after the TF2 beta was announced to avoid being really over shadowed. Surprisingly the game was very complete with minimal bugs. The dev team works on regular updates and the game is now up to version 1.11. TF2 has turned out to be the 800pd gorilla in the room, it is a great game, but it may not satisfy all the old school TF fans. Fortress Forever is that game, and I encourage anyone who is a fan of team fortress series to check it out. There aren't a ton of people playing it but you can regularly find good servers to play on.

I have no ties to this game other than being a fan, so don't think I am here just to plug it. I tried it out again tonight after getting the latest update and I thought to myself that I should help spread the word, and spend some more time playing it myself. To top it off, Fortress Forever features the map "the hunted", and if you haven't experienced the rush of chasing down and trying to assasinate the VIP, you owe it to yourself to try it out.

Same devs as TF2? No, FF was started by old school TFC standouts like schtoofa and PHISH who were fed up waiting for Valve to released the promised TF2: Brotherhood of Arms (or whatever - a Souce update to TFC) and took it upon themselves to make one. They recruited solely from the TFC community itself, and made a game that is truly community build and maintained. So like CSProMod, but actually respectable.

I am pretty sure he is referring to my mention of insurgency.

Another amazing mod is Zombie Panic Source (http://www.zombiepanic.org/). It's very different from the normal ZM maps from CSS. It's slow paced and very strategic, you should try it out.

Ya I have seen that and have wanted to give it a go.  Seems very "left 4 dead"ish, instead of zombie panic style.
