Surprisingly I owe my love for Watchmen to a girl. She will remain nameless but I should thank her nonetheless. It is rare that someone "out geeks" me but she has her moments. I had heard of it previous to her mentioning as it is almost a prerequisite of anyone with a solid interest in comics. It was her rabid interest, someone who wasn't really big in to comics that sold me. I picked it up the trade paperback and have been raving over Alan Moore's work ever since. Obviously I had a great interest in seeing the movie. I have written about it constantly here at GR. I have seen the worst the comic-to-movie world has to offer so there was no way I was going to miss out Snyder's adaption of the Watchmen; piss poor or Oscar contender. Thankfully it leans much further towards the later though it does have its flaws.
Almost every negative review I have seen compares the movie to the source material as if it someone was supposed to surpass it and because it didn't it is a failure. If anyone can recommend me movies that were better than their source material I am all ears. We all know this rarely happens. You have to judge the movie on its own as a film. Obviously we are going to compare the two as it is human nature but to dismiss a quality film just because it doesn't live up to the standard set by one of Time's All-Time 100 novels is absurd. Spoilers ahead, so be warned.
What holds this back from being nearly perfect? There are just a few things to be honest. First off the ending does bother me slightly. I know this has been discussed to death in the media but hear me out. The point of novel's climax was to showcase something alien that would unite the world. Instead of grief over New York we now have attacks across the globe "caused by Manhattan". But the line "God exists and he is American" still has me feeling the attack isn't enough to bring the world together and not have the Russians suspecting us of being involved. Would it be beyond the USA to attack ourselves to help defer blame as to spare us from WWIII? With the movie you have to assume it is. The alien/squid is a much more unifying device in my opinion.
![]() A must own for any fan of the movie or comics in general. |
Quite a few people have complained about Malin Ackerman as Laurie but I felt Veidt was surely miscast. While Goode did great bringing the character to life he just didn't come close to looking like Veidt in the comic. Ozymandius is supposed to be an Adonis, a physical specimen of perfectness. Goode did not have the height of the build to fit the role and the character wasn't nearly as imposing as he should have been.
Other than these few gripes I have little to complain about. Rorschach was nearly perfect. Jackie Earle Haley did an incredible job of bringing the character to life both in and out of costume. The "you are locked in here with me" line was epic and one of my favorite moments in the film. These "big fans" were next to me in the IMAX and some lady got up to pee just as the lunchroom scene came on and I couldn't believe someone having some bad timing.
I think Snyder did a fantastic job of filling in so much back story considering the time constraints. The credit montage, which you can view here till it is pulled offline, was a fantastic way to catch people up on what was going on though I don't know that many people who hadn't read the graphic novel knew exactly what that was all about. And Dylan over the top of them was a perfect choice. The flashbacks were well done and timed nearly perfectly in step with the comic.
The effects were stunning and not just "there is a blue dong on the screen" stunning. Manhattan looks incredible. The shots of Mars were breathtaking yet simplistic at the same time. The CGI work on Manhattan and his transformation, his powers and the splitting of his body were pretty much flawless. Crudup who was fantastic in Almost Famous now has a new role that I will always remember him for.
The music was great. The soundtrack choices made for really grand moments within the film. I did feel a couple of songs were a bit out of place; that while they still would have fit in the movie lessened a few moments that I felt were more serious in the comic. I am so glad they kept the New Frontiersmen ending in the movie. While they hardly showed the the paper throughout the film the ending was an absolute necessity to the whole "what if".
Overall I have to say that Snyder did much more than I expected from the early going. If you have seen the scripts and revisions and choices of actors over the years that have been attached to the film you would be horrified. Arnie as Dr. Manhattan? "GET TO DA CHOPPA TO GO to MARS". Snyder came closer than anything in the past and I feel an honest love for the source material really helped his cause. This wasn't Alan Moore's Watchmen on the big screen but it was Zack Snyder's Watchmen and that is an impressive feat in its own right. He was able to make his movie, the way he wanted it, with minimal interference and we should thank Warner Brothers for that as well. When this was first green lit ages ago I was prepared for some Uwe Boll'esque trash and instead I am ready to go see it again and can't wait to add it to my Blu-ray archive.
Watchmen is a movie you should not miss out on. Compare the two mediums if you must but judge the movie's quality on its own right.

Cutting the squid never bothered me, to work as a film the squid would have just given anyone that hadn't read the comic a big "wtf did i just watch" and confuse the hell out of everyone.
I loved the film overall.

Not really. If you pay attention to the comic there are plenty of panels dedicated to the island, the psychic, the geneticist, the transport of the creature, and all that jazz.
If all that was in the movie the engineered alien would have made a bit more sense. But since they ended up cutting out most of that storyline, surely it would have been a bit random to just have it teleport in to New York.

Too much of the 'squid' storyline was contained in the mid-chapter writings like The New Frontiersman article about all the missing writers, architects, etc. It would have been tough to work those in, unfortunately.

Was looking forward to seeing the squid on IMAX screen. ******* bull**** copout frame dr manhattan getup really pissed me off, other than that, badass movie. Although, Jackie Earle Haley, the guy who plays rorschach, really creeps me the **** out (go watch little children)....... solid 8/10 imo

The island scenes are definately not going to be in the extended cut, they don't connect to the story anymore and they even erased Blake learning about the plan by finding the island.
I do however think the death of Hollis Mason will be in it. *SPOILER ALERT* In the bar scene while Rorschach was interrogating you could see Nite Owl briefly look over at a knot-top before the scene cut away. Seemed like an obvious place where they trimmed the film for time.

I completely failed to see this at the weekend but after reports from friends I'm cautiously optimistic. So far, the only omission that struck me as odd is Dan Dreiberg's flab - is it just the suit holding in his gut or has the film version not gone as soft as the comic book one?

The suit holds it in. When you see him out of costume he fits the mold so to speak. When you see him and laurie get down on Archimedes you will see it plain as day.

In my humble opinion, once you get past the first fight scene, nothing compares to the choreography and raw power displayed in it. For the rest of the movie I kept chasing that first high you get thrown into in the first 5 mins. Instead of waiting for something to surpass it, you are left waiting and even insulted by an oversimplified ending that really doesn't do justice to the "complexity" of the plot.
They also over did some of the sexual content. The rape scene was actually hot, BECAUSE it was raw and short, not freaking done a la $500 budget home porn style in the middle of the movie.
Make sure you drink a red bull right after the first 10 mins or you may get bored.
3.5 out of 5, and that's being generous.

Yo, they need to somehow add all the quotes which are at the end of each chapter as they are basically the best part of the comic.
The need Ozymandias to ask Dr. Manhattan if it's all going to be alright in the end and Dr Manhattan not telling him it never ends.
What is important here in not the line itself but without it Ozymandias is completly victorious whereas in the comic he has doubt in his mind as to whether all the death was worth it.
Also the Watchmen is the second best comic. Best being The Dark Knight Returns.
Also the need to have the essay Rorschach wrote when he was a kid about his parents in the movie. This is very important as it makes us understand at the end why Rorschach is crying before Dr. Manhattan kills him. He is not crying because he will fail to tell the world or because he will die. He is crying because he agrees with what Ozymandias is doing but "Never compromise, even in the face of Armageddon;" Thus he must die in order to save face, he is crying because he realises Ozymandias was right in his murder and Rorschach was wrong.
Also The Watchmen is the second best piece of literature from the 20th Century, the best being The Dark Knight Returns.

TDK is my second favorite. Was my favorite until I picked up Watchmen. I like the story in TDK better but I can appreciate the complexity and depth of Watchmen that seemingly makes it superior.
You are right, I was going to mention the chapter supplements, some more important than others. The "Truman was a good man bit" was pretty important. They probably should have at least tossed that in the interview with the psychiatrist or something.

Also there's basically just as much complexity in The Dark Knight Returns it just isn't as obvious IMO.

TDK made comics dark. Watchmen made them real. I think I know which one I'd put as the better of the two.

Was talking to my friend about this, who prefers Watchmen for similar reasons to Slapnuts. I basically prefer The Dark Knight Returns because the coolest lines from it are actually original lines Frank Miller wrote, not a quote from Nietzsche and:
My name is Ozymandias, king of kings.
Look on my works ye might and despair.
- Percey Bysshe Shelley.

I think my biggest disappointment was how they cut up Dr. Manhatten's interaction with the photograph on Mars. That's always been one of my favorite sections in the book. In the movie it plays out as just an ordinary flashback. But, in the book it was much more as it helped you understand Manhatten's sense of time.
I don't know, I just feel that his character wasn't fully developed in the movie. I've heard there are director's cuts, so I hope some of that gets put back in.
Ozy lost a lot too, because they didn't include the mid-chapter writings.
I really enjoyed the movie though and am looking forward to the longer versions.

Personally I thought the person who played Ozymandias was perfect. While yes he was not a comic book Adonis noone is.
The characters I thought they could **** up the most when I saw the trailer were Ozymandias and The Comedian. However, both were ******* perfect.

The Comedian was amazing. Someone I felt wasn't all that interesting in the comic as you learn about him through flashbacks seemed to come alive so well on film. He was a joy to watch on screen.

I've read nothing but negative reports so far, but then again I didn't read this :P
I know nothing about the story, so it's not really of much interest to me. Will download when a screener comes out.

The movie was really good. I think a lot of the 'negativity' is just fans wishing certain things would have made it into the movie.
Read the book if you can, it's worth it!

I thought the Manhattan explosion thing was fine. Worked in nicely with the guise of him trying to create unlimited energy to unite the world (I don't know if that was in the original or what), and in the end, the meaning was basically the same -- millions died to save billions.

I agree, apart from the detail Ozymandias goes into when explaining to Rorschach and Daniel on how he created it and how it works is sooo fricken' cool. I hope the Extended has the Squid Alien thing instead. But yeah the Dr Manhattan did it works fine
