Surprisingly I owe my love for Watchmen to a girl. She will remain nameless but I should thank her nonetheless. It is rare that someone "out geeks" me but she has her moments. I had heard of it previous to her mentioning as it is almost a prerequisite of anyone with a solid interest in comics. It was her rabid interest, someone who wasn't really big in to comics that sold me. I picked it up the trade paperback and have been raving over Alan Moore's work ever since. Obviously I had a great interest in seeing the movie. I have written about it constantly here at GR. I have seen the worst the comic-to-movie world has to offer so there was no way I was going to miss out Snyder's adaption of the Watchmen; piss poor or Oscar contender. Thankfully it leans much further towards the later though it does have its flaws.
Almost every negative review I have seen compares the movie to the source material as if it someone was supposed to surpass it and because it didn't it is a failure. If anyone can recommend me movies that were better than their source material I am all ears. We all know this rarely happens. You have to judge the movie on its own as a film. Obviously we are going to compare the two as it is human nature but to dismiss a quality film just because it doesn't live up to the standard set by one of Time's All-Time 100 novels is absurd. Spoilers ahead, so be warned.
What holds this back from being nearly perfect? There are just a few things to be honest. First off the ending does bother me slightly. I know this has been discussed to death in the media but hear me out. The point of novel's climax was to showcase something alien that would unite the world. Instead of grief over New York we now have attacks across the globe "caused by Manhattan". But the line "God exists and he is American" still has me feeling the attack isn't enough to bring the world together and not have the Russians suspecting us of being involved. Would it be beyond the USA to attack ourselves to help defer blame as to spare us from WWIII? With the movie you have to assume it is. The alien/squid is a much more unifying device in my opinion.
![]() A must own for any fan of the movie or comics in general. |
Quite a few people have complained about Malin Ackerman as Laurie but I felt Veidt was surely miscast. While Goode did great bringing the character to life he just didn't come close to looking like Veidt in the comic. Ozymandius is supposed to be an Adonis, a physical specimen of perfectness. Goode did not have the height of the build to fit the role and the character wasn't nearly as imposing as he should have been.
Other than these few gripes I have little to complain about. Rorschach was nearly perfect. Jackie Earle Haley did an incredible job of bringing the character to life both in and out of costume. The "you are locked in here with me" line was epic and one of my favorite moments in the film. These "big fans" were next to me in the IMAX and some lady got up to pee just as the lunchroom scene came on and I couldn't believe someone having some bad timing.
I think Snyder did a fantastic job of filling in so much back story considering the time constraints. The credit montage, which you can view here till it is pulled offline, was a fantastic way to catch people up on what was going on though I don't know that many people who hadn't read the graphic novel knew exactly what that was all about. And Dylan over the top of them was a perfect choice. The flashbacks were well done and timed nearly perfectly in step with the comic.
The effects were stunning and not just "there is a blue dong on the screen" stunning. Manhattan looks incredible. The shots of Mars were breathtaking yet simplistic at the same time. The CGI work on Manhattan and his transformation, his powers and the splitting of his body were pretty much flawless. Crudup who was fantastic in Almost Famous now has a new role that I will always remember him for.
The music was great. The soundtrack choices made for really grand moments within the film. I did feel a couple of songs were a bit out of place; that while they still would have fit in the movie lessened a few moments that I felt were more serious in the comic. I am so glad they kept the New Frontiersmen ending in the movie. While they hardly showed the the paper throughout the film the ending was an absolute necessity to the whole "what if".
Overall I have to say that Snyder did much more than I expected from the early going. If you have seen the scripts and revisions and choices of actors over the years that have been attached to the film you would be horrified. Arnie as Dr. Manhattan? "GET TO DA CHOPPA TO GO to MARS". Snyder came closer than anything in the past and I feel an honest love for the source material really helped his cause. This wasn't Alan Moore's Watchmen on the big screen but it was Zack Snyder's Watchmen and that is an impressive feat in its own right. He was able to make his movie, the way he wanted it, with minimal interference and we should thank Warner Brothers for that as well. When this was first green lit ages ago I was prepared for some Uwe Boll'esque trash and instead I am ready to go see it again and can't wait to add it to my Blu-ray archive.
Watchmen is a movie you should not miss out on. Compare the two mediums if you must but judge the movie's quality on its own right.

Called it!
If and only if the rumored extended edition has the true ending it will be worth it.
And for those who were meh about the screen time (it flew by to me personally, as did the 5 hour animated comic), wasn't Lotr just as long if not longer?

Noooooooooooo
Minus the side stories I can't think of anything else they can really do (which is basically all that is missing I suppose).

To lazy to go through all the comments, but the best way I can describe this film is yes, for the most part I did enjoy it, but not because of the content of the movie, but because of the very compelling and interesting story that it has. (Haven't read the comic, but after this I do want to go out and buy it when I have money.) With that said, as a movie it felt average, but when I go the movies(particularly super hero movies) I expect a lot of action. Not to say this movie didn't haven action, just not the amount you'd expect from super hero movies. I guess the point I'm trying to make is it felt like I was watching a comic book for almost 3 hours straight which does make for great story telling, but leaves you with an average feeling for a super hero movie.

A lot of the negativity floating around about this movie I think stems from the fact that 90% of the people that went to see it went in expecting a LOLHolleywood comic movie. Basically they came to see special effects, hot chicks, a bunch of fight scenes, and the good guys saving the day in the end.
They came in expecting Xmen 3 or a Spiderman flick, but instead got an actual movie that requires them to think, to sit down and pay attention. It really is in line with Godfather. A lot of people will say "its too long, i got bored" because the modern attention span can be measured in a breath.
I personally loved the movie. I am upset at some of the things cut, or not even included, and the ending did bother me. But overall its a solid movie and one I want to see again.
As far as the ending btw, its piss poor. Blaming Manhattan is so full of holes. IT achieves nothing. In a few years, maybe a generation or two, hostilities will commence. Manhattan wont return, and the public has at least a minor perception of this. With the Squid ending, there is always that slim chance that another one will appear and wipe out another 15 million people. There is that psychic fear implanted into the entire planet from the first squid, making people remember the threat of an alien invasion, making psychics have nightmares for the rest of their lives. In short, the squid ending had no loopholes. it was fullproof. It would work.
I dont see why they didnt use this ending in the movie. It wouldnt even have to be a squid. It could be anything, just so long as it looked like an alien.
Also I dont think they did a really good job conveying just how close to extinction human nature was guiding humanity. The comic sums it up perfectly just before the squid. The world is potentially hours from world war 3 and what are they concerned about? Two lesbians fighting because they are both insensitive *****, a selfish wife threatening to leave her husband because hes one of the few people in the world that wants to do the right thing, and dozens of random passersby watching all this like its the greatest thing in the world to see...
More interaction with the common citizen in the movie would have been great. Because as much as Rorschach and Manhattan are focus points of the novel, so too are the random citizens and humanity as a whole.

I really missed that part of the novel in the movie, along with all the small details that made the world really seem like an alternate history.

The Black Freighter version of the movie, which we call the final cut or the ultimate cut – it has a marketed name that I don’t know exactly what it is. That version of the movie, because when we were up there we physically shot the in’s and out’s, scenes at the newsstand that go into the movie. There’s like scenes where our characters pass the newsstand and then we pick up action at the newsstand and it gets us into the Black Freighter….with shots that go into it and it comes to life and you follow the Black Freighter story and then come back into the movie. That version of the movie is the director’s cut with the Black Freighter intercut. That version sort of traces the structure of the Black Freighter that's integrated into the comic book… So that version is the 3 hour and 25 minute version. So you have all those in’s and out’s…but the director’s cut includes the Hollis death stuff, that’s just a lot more connective tissue…it’s hard for me to even remember exactly what’s in it. But it’s just a lot more.

Seems we will get a lot of that newspaper stand action. And I agree that stuff is key as it humanizes the world, gives you an alternate perspective and makes you care.

I didn't expect to see something like Spiderman or any of the other comic book movies. I just expected a better plot. The Watchmen had a pretty corny plot IMO, and a lot of the content was unneeded.

ROFL, I could not agree more about the track selection...I was confused when the 99 red balloons song came on. The only song I felt that really fit was in the opening credits...

I said something similar the other day. I liked the tracks selected, i just didn't feel they always fit in their location in the movie.

Wow. Lot of people commenting that they didn't like Watchmen what bunch of slack jawed ******* on this site. An "R" rated movie comes out based on a comic book that is engaging and artistic and violent as hell and people don't like it? Are there that many pansies out there? Don't worry pansies there are some formula PG-13 **** box comic adaptations out there for you in the future. I for one will be waiting for Kick Ass and Sin City 2 while you will be waiting to go see the money loving PG13 movies with no artistic merit you all love.

The soundtrack was completely awful. Why couldn't they have hired some real musicians and scored the whole thing so that you would get chills in some of the scenes? If they had used some of these god awful cheesy songs in, say, The dark Knight I would have shot myself.
And **** hollywood for meddling their dirty fingers in the movie. The flamethrower going off when they orgasm? SERIOUSLY? Adding a gattling gun to Archie to shoot down the water tower and accomplish nothing just to show some bullet shells in slow mo? SERIOUSLY?
Some of the scenes were very poorly acted too.
But overall, I liked it. Changes and all.

Timing it like that was kinda cheesy but at least it kinda kept a scene from the novel in.
