Recently, we introduced our new Real ID feature http://eu.battle.net/realid/, a new way to stay connected with your friends on the new Battle.net. Today, we wanted to give you a heads up about our plans for Real ID on our official forums, discuss the design philosophy behind the changes we’re making, and give you a first look at some of the new features we’re adding to the forums to help improve the quality of conversations and make the forums an even more enjoyable place for players to visit.

The first and most significant change is that in the near future, anyone posting or replying to a post on official Blizzard forums will be doing so using their Real ID -- that is, their real-life first and last name -- with the option to also display the name of their primary in-game character alongside it. These changes will go into effect on all StarCraft II forums with the launch of the new community site prior to the July 27 release of the game, with the World of Warcraft site and forums following suit near the launch of Cataclysm. Certain classic forums, including the classic Battle.net forums, will remain unchanged.

So Blizzard are now making it so instead of showing your character on those forums, it'll instead show your real name with the option of attaching your char name too it (no option of not showing your real name).

Now I think it's fairly safe to say that this is perhaps the dumbest idea that anyone has ever had ever.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Victory for Freedom of Speech - Blizzard cancels Real ID.

http://forums.wow-europe.com/thread.html?topicId=13816839821&sid=1

Removing all personal details now, they were only to prove a point and that has been achieved, congratulations everyone.

Now imagine there are people who dress like that for MARDI GRAS. If a
boss (or in your words: employee) has a problem with that, I wouldn't
want to work for him.

I wouldn't want to work for you either, as
prude as you seem to be.

This makes sense. You're employer obviously will never know your real name. He can also never google you or check for your facebook.

Chances are pretty decent that everyone can start over with a clean sheet, that happened last time they updated the forums too.

wouldnt be surprised if you are one of those losers on 4chan that somehow finds out peoples real name and adress, from what seems like a random cam***** pic, then proceed to spam their facebook friends with it.

If you think about it for a little bit, you'll understand why this is still a bad thing. That poor guy has nothing to do with this **** and his phone is probably going crazy.

It's not hard to extrapolate this logic into much worse situations in the future.

Hey, I totally feel sorry for the guy.

But HE offered up HIS name as a way to placate all the people who are saying on the forums this is a bad idea.

He offered up his identity in defense of it, I'm giving everyone a look at the information that a normal person can retrieve about someone solely by their name in under 5mins.

You could easily convince someone on 4chan to do something to the guy even with randoms saying "not your personal army." They ****** up a chick's facebook over her refusal to show tits just the other day; it should be nothing to find a /b/tard that plays WoW that thinks this is a massive spasm of Asperger syndrome from Blizzard Ent. and feels like doing something humorous about it.

4chan is already bad, but Encyclopedia Dramatica is far worse, because unlike 4chan, everything there stays forever. I wonder why that website still wasn't closed by the authorities.

If you check the PeopleLookUp you'll notice the previous cities are Irvine, CA and Aliso Viejo, CA both seems reasonable enough for him to be a Blizzard employee when actually looking at the details that were uncovered and not just what you want to see.

Ever hear of telecommuting?   I'm pretty sure there are many Blizz/Act employees work from home or a office away from HQ. (found a HR job posing for Bliz in Austin, TX)

Idiot. That's because there's a Blizzard office in Austin, Texas. They do not do telecommuting at Blizzard. The idiot who posted this topic just posted some innocent guy's address and details. Just because he got one detail right (his facebook) doesn't mean it's the same person.

The idiocy of this topic is astounding.

No matter if your right or not, crack jobs now have a reason to target this person if it is who they think it is or not. Still going to screw some "Micah Whipple" up in a way.

http://www.whitepages.com/search/FindPerson?firstname_begins_with=1&firstname=Micah&name=Whipple&where=CA

Check out the related people under sponsored links.  That city just so happens to be damn close to Anaheim.

ETA: I used to live in Lower Lake, which is in the same county is Lakeport.  Housing is cheaper there than in most parts of California, and it's also a popular vacation/summer home destination for people who work in the larger cities.
