I never thought there'd be another TV show i'd like more. Sure, I enjoy the hell out of Law and Order, Star Trek and Blues Clues, but BSG struck my nerdbone a little harder than the rest. Long story short, I coudn't just AFK in Tor Anroc (now Shattrath again) more, and I certainly couldn't go outside, so I started up another show: Dexter.
Before I get started on Dexter, I'd like to mention that i've been a fan of anime for a while now too. Not some hardcore Gibthesix, but i managed to sit through my fair share of naruto, bleach, claymore, trigun, cowboy bebop, and a few others -- my favorite probably being Death Note.

I really got into it when I got started on it, and binged much like I did with BSG -- and of course, since the show wasn't finished yet, I ran into a brick wall of released episodes and, unfortunately, I haven't gotten back to it yet (I stopped around episode 40, maybe?)
Anyways, I've seen enough of this show, that when i started watching Dexter,

I was literally PUMMELED with parallels between the two shows from vastly different genres. If you enjoy the hell out of Dexter like me (I'm about halfway through Season 2, bingeing, of course) You really should watch Death Note.
Stop right there:
How many of you just fell out of your command centers screaming I DON'T NEED NO NERD ANIME! Why did you do it? This anti-anime stigma throws me off a bit, since i enjoy both. Before I get into that, I'd like to outline just a few of the parallels between the shows:
***************************************************************
POSSIBLE MINOR SPOILERS BELOW
***************************************************************
*Â The Main Character of both shows is a serial killer
*Â Both serial killers have their version of a "supercop" hunting them
*Â Both serial killers are extremely intelligent
*Â Both serial killers have secret, unbreakable codes they must follow
*Â Both serial killers (at least began) with the intention of only killing criminals, for their various reasons
*Â Both serial killers are active in the police department
*Â Both serial killers end up participating in the investigation to find themselves
*Â Both serial killers practice media manipulation
*Â Both serial killers meet a second, similar serial killer
*Â Both serial killers have a girlfriend, with only the intention of using them
*Â Both serial killers have a guide / teacher, and neither guide / teacher is 100% helpful for their various reasons
*Â Both serial killers actively modify and manipulate police files
*Â Both serial killers have been under video and human surveillance for durations in their respective shows
* Both cereal killers make reckless use of innocent lives to maintain secrecy, showing that secrecy is more important to them than strictly following their code
****************************************************************
SPOILER END
***************************************************************
Anyways,
Thats just a few of them, if you've watched both shows i'm sure you've noticed how strikingly similar they are. More people (a Lot more people) are going to watch and enjoy Dexter, though; And thats a pity. If you enjoy Dexter, you are most certainly guaranteed to enjoy Death Note (and vice versa) -- theres less tits in Death Note, but lets be serious, just pop in 5 minutes of your paris hilton sex tape once you're done with an episode and it will even out.
Conclusion:
Its a shame that really good anime's are frowned upon by the general public, while they watch (and enjoy) shows with extremely similar themes. I guess what i'm saying is, next time you glance at something and dismiss it, give it another look. You might find you're holding a ****ty canadian quarter and not a good ol' george washington, and now you're 25c short for that diet pepsi.

Death Note was decent, but there are plenty of better anime.

Ok, now you are insane. Perhaps they should have ended it with L, but to say death note was "decent" is absolutely absurd....please name these other mircaculous animes so i can watch them.

Gibtehstix is a special snowflake, his skill at detecting just how good an anime is is unmatched. You think he'd like something the masses enjoyed? Preposterous, he's such rebel.

I preferred Code Geass to Death Note, though both were similar.

It really depends on what genres you like. Death note might just be the best if you like its type of anime. Everyone has a type of movie or show they like and they will base what's best on that. I personally love the hotblooded mech shows, and we all know gib loves the magic girl shows.

agree with gib. Its just that so many saw it as their first anime and they think it has gotta be the best evurrrrrrrr

lol fail :P See it's hard. Code geas is too much of a copy cat and it really started sucking in season 2.

Being serious this time (though I
macross 7...oh yes i most certainly do) Cowboy beebop or one of those shows that got a lot of my generation hooked on anime I would vote for, really its totally subjective of what genre you like or what looks good through nostolgia tinted glasses.
And also are we talking about death note type of anime or in general?

Well there is plenty of series then. May be showing my power level a bit here but I feel, though it is overhyped and the fanbase is atrocious, death note isnt bad.
Other series that I feel are must watch are; harlock (arcadia of my youth notably though I would toss in galaxy express 999 interstella 5555 due to the artist), Eva/raxephone (same series pretty much though I prefer rah on the sole fact that ayato isnt a *****), gundam (any of the good ones), Macross series (it brings people together in such things as; hating minmei's guts, thinking ranka is cute(or hateing the cuteness) enjoying zentran raaaaaggeee and listening to good music), Gurren Lagann, gun x sword, GaoGaiGar (including final), fmp, cowboy beebop, .//hack (excluding lottb), and outlaw star and finally shuffle (lol wut a harem thats good?). I know many are niche but these are what I would put as good as death note or better. I also didnt put up ova or short series like Iria (if you havent watched it do, very good horror anime).
Now Ill say ignore the fanbase, to many people hate series just because the fanbase is full of ****tards.

Don't forget the new season of 30 Rock, and possibly Entourage if it doesn't turn out like last season's crap.

I'm somewhat of a new fan of Dexter myself, saw the first episode of season 3 then went out and bought the first 2 seasons since I was too lazy to wait for the DL's; both seasons were amazing.
Compared to the first two seasons, the beginning of season 3 kind of lagged; I think last Sunday's episode is when it started to get into gear, i'm pretty excited for next week's. I was really hoping for a miscarriage -_-

Dexter and BSG are amazing.
I've never watched an Anime for more then an episode, but I'll give Death Note a try based on your recommendations. If anyone knows where to watch this stuff please let me know, I'm an anime nub.

English dub is actually pretty good, caught a few episodes on Cartoon Network and was pleasantly surprised.
Also, the full manga is out in the US if you're really eager to get to the end, though I'm unsure how closely the anime followed the manga storyline.

I had actually caught an episode of death not in the middle of one of the seasons and it intrigued me. The internal dialogues were very good and it was an interesting concept. I've always been a fan of vigilante justice type shows. When I got the chance and downloaded the series, and I literally watched it from start to finish over the summer in between sleeping (I was excel jockey over the summer so I could watch at work). It was an awesome show, a little excessive at times, but it really hit the right nerve on my more sadistic side. Then my roommate had been watching dexter and recommended it to me (we both had been watching every tv show under the sun over the summer). Almost immediately I recognized the similarities between dexter and deathnote. I watched seasons one and 2 from start to finish as well on all my free time. Dexter is easily the best show on TV right now, and I'd recommend it to anyone trying to find something good to watch. No show since the wire has kept me so hooked.

No but seriously, you're like the first person i've talked to that flat out doesn't like it. Would you mind suggesting a better one? (esp one of the same type - police, suspense, etc)

I've watched season one of Dexter and I love it so far, so yeah, I'll look on to getting Death Note off a friend.
