Kanye West has declared himself the voice of our generation. To start with the obvious, he's been a success story that is hard to disregard. He is a college drop-out, a music producer, a beat inventor, a lyrical genius, and at the same time, a motivator to a lot of people who were not born into opportunity. His latest album 808's & Heartbreak, regardless of the fact that auto-tuner is the reason why it succeeded, brought hip-hop to a whole new level in terms of creativity. It wasn't an album that consisted of a bunch of black 27 year olds rhyming "*****" with "*****" and talking about nothing but rape, sex, drugs, and life on the streets; which is ironic because a large majority of the black rappers out there grew up in a very family oriented environment, attended good schools, and the closest thing they saw to a "street life" as a kid was Sesame Street.
Kanye did something with his latest album, that not many people seemed to pick up on, and amazingly Britney Spears did the same thing with her latest song "If You Seek Amy" which for those of you who don't listen to music, is a play on words for her saying "F-U-C-K me." Writing in the hip hop industry is starting to slowly fade from the monotonous repetition it has been for years, and instead is transitioning to a more story-based genre, much like the country scene. It isn't so much about a phrase people can mindlessly repeat anymore while smashed at a dance club, it is about telling a story to an unrivaled beat. A beat that makes you believe in what you are listening to subconsciously.
Regardless of Kanye's attitude, there are many songs where he preaches a gospel that not many other people seem to be aware of, and it is the same gospel that made Jason Mraz an icon to the music world - follow your dreams. It sounds cliche, and many people will respond with excuses as to why that is a ridiculous thought, but the people who follow their dreams are the ones who end up with a lifestyle they are proud of down the road. Whether or not that incorporates fame and an 8 figure salary is up to you, but living a dream means you aren't working a job and you aren't stuck in a career; you are changing the world, whether you like it or not.
It’s amazing, I’m the reason
Everybody fired up this evening
I’m exhausted, barely breathing
Holding on to what I believe in
And no matter what, you’ll never take that from me
My reign is as far as your eyes can see
It’s amazing, so amazing, so amazing, so amazing
It’s amazing
~Kanye West
Success doesn't just fall into place. You are only as amazing as your work ethic, determination, and drive.

808s and Heartbreak was the best album of 2008 to me. Probably the realist **** he ever wrote.

There is more to it than just whining about a chick. Not that it bothers me, as I listen to R&B from time to time.

Considering 6 of the 12 tracks were actually about a girl and 3 relating directly to the break up, you have no idea what you're talking about. Good job though being a moron like usual.

Here's a track by track song analysis since you're such an idiot:
Track 1: Say You Will-Is about his break-up with his girlfriend, about the lies she told him. There's 1 of 6.
Track 2: Welcome to Heartbreak-This song has nothing to do with the break-up or his ex. It's about him regretting missing out on the real important things in his life.
Track 3: Heartless-Obviously about the break-up. Track 2 of 6.
Track 4: Amazing-About how he feels about him being a successful music artist.
Track 5: Love Lockdown-Actually has nothing to do with the break-up. Sorry if you're too stupid to realize it, but it's actually about Africa. If you've ever seen the video it's quite apparent, as are interviews about the song.
Track 6: Paranoid-It's definitely about his relationship, but not specifically about the break-up. It's about her being paranoid in the relationship. Track 3 of 6.
Track 7: Robo Cop-Not about the break-up exactly, but moreso about how she became a paranoid/cold-hearted person. Track 4 of 6.
Track 8: Street Lights-Nothing to do with his ex. It's all about passing through amazing moments in his life without realizing it.
Track 9: Bad News-About the break-up. Track 5 of 6.
Track 10: See You in my Nightmares-About the break-up. Track 6 of 6.
Track 11: Coldest Winter-Is actually about his mom who died recently.
Track 12: Pinnochio Story (Freestyle)-Is about his life in general, not specifically about a girl or a break-up.
There's 6 tracks about women in general, 4 of them are about the break-up. I was wrong about it being 3. Either way you're still and ignorant moron.

I've never been a fan of Kanye West in terms of his ability to rap or the way he acts. His lyrics are unengaging and not really interesting and his full of himself attitude really gets on my nerves. My two favourite songs of his were Jesus Walks and Diamonds From Sierra Leone, then I heard Lupe Fiasco's versions and he outdoes Kanye on every level.
However I wouldn't deny the fact he has a talent for producing catchy and interesting beats. 808 And Heartbreaks was interesting, I'm not really sure if i like it or not however it was something new. He's far better at delivering a message while singing than rapping. My personal favourite was Streetlights, that song is so amazing.
He has worked hard, and he is undeniably good and respected by some of the greated, as we can see here

Streetlights was an amazing song, basically about him regretting missing a lot of great times simply because he didn't notice that they were happening.

Kanye West is a terrible MC. He's also arguably the best producer in the game.
I can't stand his self-aggrandizement. I respect the point he makes though about his new album where he says he isn't claiming to be a good singer. Put away opinions and preconceptions, and listen to a song like Champion. It just sounds good, which is the entire point of his music.

He'll never have the rhyming ability of J nor does he have the source material that those older-school guys had. He also has a habit of doing tracks like Touch the Sky with much better MCs (in this case Lupe). I'd love to see him release his own album where he only raps if he has some sick lines down, and brings guys like Common, Talib, Mos Def, Black Thought, etc. all on board to do the MCing.
His ego is far too big for that though.

There's no way he's going to bring artists on that are going to smoke him on the track. It's one of the reasons fewer and fewer artists collab' with Black Thought these days, because he always ends up wreckin' them.
It'd be like Premier's "Classic"- Kanye would just be out of his league

Well he puts far better artists on his tracks all the time, like Lupe on Touch the Sky, or Talib and Common on Get 'Em High. I think it would do a lot for the entire genre if he did an album that he put his name behind as producer and got a bunch of other artists on it. Like Talib Kweli's Liberation album he shares the credits completely with Madlib.
Kanye is no doubt one of the best producers in the game and hiphop fans recognize that the producer is as integral as the MC. Think about the artists he has collaborated with;
Talib Kweli
Common
Lupe Fiasco
Black Thought
Mos Def
An album that just says "Kanye West" as the artists and features these guys every track? Ridiculous!
I agree with Black Thought though. Best MC on the mic, no one can touch him IMHO.

True, true he is one of the best producers out there. He just needs to quit rappin' though, homeboy does the art a disservice everytime he opens his mouth.
And yea, and album like you suggested would be dope. Like Pete Rock's "Soul Survivors", that stuff was fire.

Oh and if you like his style check out Lupe Fiasco, Common, N.E.R.D, and Saul Williams.
