Operating Profit Continues Downward Trend
The graph above shows Funcom's quarterly reported EBIT, or "operating profit," over the past three and a half years (the bulk of the development time for Age of Conan). For those unfamiliar with the term, a description of Earnings Before Interest And Tax is available on Investopedia. Referencing financial reports from Q4-2005, Q4-2006, Q4-2007, and Q2-2008, one finds a pattern that has recently become much more alarming.
Negative profits can be absorbed from time to time, but the losses in this case have increased for seven straight quarters, from 353,000 USD in Q3-2006 to 5.73 million USD lost in Q2-2008. With such a sustained dropoff, management's handle on the situation should fall under serious scrutiny.
Age of Conan Debuts With Huge Sales...Media and gamers alike have been following the developing story of Age of Conan since its launch on May 20th (right in the middle of Q2). Funcom reported record sales numbers upon release, and expectations were high for the new mature-rated MMORPG, but software glitches and a perceived lack of game content has led to negative reviews and a rapidly dwindling playerbase.
A June 30, 2008 investor update reports the company can expect to receive roughly 20% of the 60 USD Age of Conan sale price from retail channels. The Q2 report gives us concrete figures of approximately 800,000 units sold at retail, so at 12 USD per game we're looking at ~9.6 million USD in retail revenues from Age of Conan.
Unfortunately for Funcom, nearly half the customers who purchased the game failed to subscribe beyond the "free month" included with the box. The official figure released in the financial report indicate that only 415,000 subscribers were active by June 30, 11 days after the free month expired.
... But the Losses Keep Piling Up
After suffering 14 consecutive quarters of negative profits during Age of Conan's development, we were under the impression that Funcom's future would be largely dictated by the success of this particular title. Funcom says as much in the Risk Factors report included with the Q4 2007 financials:
"Funcom's future income is highly dependent on the success of the Age of Conan MMO ... [the game] is expected to contribute with significant revenues and earnings..."
"Furthermore, the game is intended to be one of the funding sources for the development of other titles ... lower cash inflows than expected could also have an indirect effect in terms of reduced revenues, earnings, and cash flows from other games and the future funding requirements of the Company."
Indeed, the Company has dug itself into quite a hole over the past few years while banking on Age of Conan's future success. If we take a look at the cumulative losses in operating profit piled up since the beginning of 2005, we see that the damage has now topped 20.7 million USD:

It is now clear, however, that the game's release acted more like an anchor than a life raft, pulling profits down to a record low.
Return To Profitability Seems Unlikely
With the big launch having come and gone, the future appears dim for Funcom. The in-game activity level and population counts on Age of Conan are widely reported to have fallen dramatically since launch, and the inference is that subscription numbers should roughly match this decline. If the game could hang on to 800,000 subscribers (12 million USD per month), a recovery of the development losses would be within reach, but speculation within the community is that only a small fraction of those subscribers remain. Indeed, the official confirmation that only 415,000 subscriptions remained active on June 30 signals a sharp downward trend.
Operational costs have ramped up since the launch, as increases in hardware, hosting demands, and support personnel cut directly into game revenues. Can Funcom right the ship with other new products or major improvements to the Age of Conan game? When four+ years of focused work and sustained losses culminate in a record-selling game launch that still fails to turn a profit, it doesn't seem likely.
In today's unforgiving MMO market, we can't know for sure if the fault lies with the management or the game itself, but we do know that Funcom needs to cut one or the other loose before the whole company is pulled under.

Well, you didn't say it, but it's the general reason I continue. Around the interwebs, that's the response I get from a lot of Conan diehards, and I want to keep bombarding with the truth until they can't deny it any longer.

I appreciate the support, jflanden -- I don't have the ability to post on the official forums, but I agree that the customers should be aware of the general company news.
It seems they don't like posts about Funcom there (moved to offtopic) -- perhaps you could post a newly reworded topic in General that focuses specifically on the Age of Conan numbers from the Q2 report, with the same link?

Any chance you would do something similar with EVE Online? I think EVE's population is around 250k, but they're still churning out new content, and seem to be doing well. Pity for AoC.

Unfortunately, CCP Games is a private company, so it's not likely that we can get much data on that title. If the population is around 250k, that would make it larger and in a much healthier position than Age of Conan.

In a way this is really bad as a WoW-player because with complete monopoly and no competition out there , blizz has nothing to push further for. By the end of the day its competition that increase quality and lower the prices.

I agree Hogan, competition in the market leads to better products. But I guess at this point we have to hope that WAR catches on a little better; it doesn't appear that Age of Conan will be inspiring much of anything from Blizzard.

I said this months ago after I did so much group PVP in AoC I realized this is all the game had to offer and I knew AoC was going to fail and make the MMO genre even weaker.

50% of people who went to a store and plunked down $50 DID NOT pay $15 to play beyond 30 days - thats HORRIFIC. honestly im amazed more than 10% continue to play that steaming POS.
they clearly spend a ton of money, effort, and creativity on AoC. how they managed to ship it with this many flaws is incredible. the bugs, the grinding, the overall LACK OF FUN... every aspect of the game fails.

I agree that the result is surprising given the efforts that have gone into the development. I can only assume that the head of the project is responsible... wasn't the same person leading the way with Anarchy Online back at its launch?

* I stand by my claim that the outlook is negative. Funcom released its guidance about Q2 results on June 30th. Given that the quarter was already over, how could they be "off" in this guidance? Basically, they said, "Our earnings as of today will be X, but we won't officially release the numbers until 6 weeks from now." If you report a story, wait six weeks and report it again, does it mean you "forecasted" the story the second time? No. Large losses were promised, and large losses were delivered. To me, that's a negative prognosis.
* The Q2 report, by standard procedures, is assumed to contain Q2 data, which ends on June 30th. The report was presented on August 15th but the quarter ended on June 30th.
* Funcom's "expected revenues" of 16-20 Million for Q3 would imply that they expect the subscriber count to remain locked in near 400,000 for the entire quarter. Given the alarming attrition rate so far, how can you argue that it is realistic to expect no other players to leave during this quarter?
* I did not discuss the Funcom cash position, as it does not reflect on the operating performance of the company. They started with a big pile of cash, they got private investors to give them 30 million USD more, and yet they have done nothing but burn through it over the past three years. A company that takes in money and makes no profit is not a healthy company.

Its got to suck to know that a game you developed is failing your company.
If you were a developer/programmer on AoC and you are now jobless, it must be hard finding a job at anything good when you have AoC on your resume/website.
With that said, I had fun in the little time (game-wise) I played AoC. Beta sucked ******* balls, beyond what it is now. Then the game released and all my buddies sucked me in. As I played and leveled up I didn't give a flying **** about the quest bugs or player bugs/flaws in general, I was just having fun playing something new on my sexy computer in full-detail.
2 Level 80s later and countless group PVP encounters with the same people I got bored and knew the game wasn't going to make it. Especially after the announcement of that ******* anti-griefing jail system, LOL.
Let this be a lesson; don't release **** that isn't finished. But it looks like others aren't listening to that plea, Warhammer... I mean Failhammer, you're next!
