As the spectre of recession looms over global finance, the insane power of burst damage has cast a shadow over an arena system which used to be far more controlled and stable. Risky bankers, ineffective regulatory regimes and colossal debt has brought capitalism to its knees whilst ridiculous arcane mages, overpowered death knights and absurd mutilate rogues have left arena in tatters.
Now that the dust has settled on patch 3.08 we're left with pvp that is far too bursty, classes with an array of problems still to be solved, ring of valor which makes a mockery of the word "competitive" and a new matchmaking system which has given Blizzard a whole new set of difficulties that weren't even necessary in the first place.
Unfortunately we're now left in a situation where it's unlikely there will be any major changes until patch 3.1 which will be months away. Consequently, much like 2009 will be a complete write-off for any form of western economic growth, we might as well close the door on Season 5 and hang our heads in shame at the Deadly Gladiators whose titles will be about as meaningful as being the CEO of Lehman Brothers.
ESL Continental Finals March 3-5
Even more worrying from an e-sports point-of-view is that WoW's next major tournament in Hannover will most likely be played using patch 3.08 and all the cheese that goes with it. Obviously ESL Montréal and Philadelphia were a huge joke also but patch 3.0 in TBC is nowhere near as bad as 3.08 in WotLK.
There's been a lot of talk over the last week that "arena is dead" etc etc and whilst I don't want to get into all that hyperbole will ESL Hannover be WoW's worst competition to date? After all the optimism and enthusiasm that came out of the very first MLG in San Diego last year, patch 3.08 is the best we can expect for WoW's initial tournament of 2009?

arena is a battle won by whichever team has the shiniest wheel chair. ;[

Aside from a few fairly rare examples the "better" players of times past are still holding down the top spots on the arena ladders. heal/dps 2v2 better represented than 2dps, 2 healer 5s better represented than 4 dps, and there is an array of "working" 3v3 comps more so than any time in the past.
Also comparing 3.0.8 to 3.0 TBC is laughably ignorant.

RMP works because rogue/mage are broken. It's weird, you'd almost think the lead developer (Lord Kalgan, may He live forever) now plays a mage and that his girlfriend plays a rogue. Naturally that's a silly notion, as his former class (warrior) and rogue were so weak throughout all of TBC.
Heh.

The way of the Kalgan can be confusing at times. Believe it, Roma, believe it!

So where does druids being arguably even more OP than rogues (going by tourneys) during TBCÂ come into this theory?

It comes in (according to some) the form of Anenga being tapped to provide some pvp balance design.

Druids were the support class to ensure rogues/warriors remained top shelf viable. I'm sure it's purely a coincidence that druids are no longer a top shelf class now that His Azerothian Majesty Kalgan switched from warrior to mage. Pure. Coincidence.
Why did he switch to mage if he could've just buffed warriors? Why would he leave warriors so extremely weak when it's still one of his alts. Why are DK's so ridicilously OP, why are pallies the best healers if he switched to mage (pre-WotLK most would probably say that IF a mage would ever play with a healer it'd most likely be a priest).
I mean it's fun to make jokes about but seriously, the "Kalgan overbuffs the classes he and his girlfriend play" theory just doesn't work in reality.

First off, Lord Kalgan works in mysterious ways. We cannot always discern His every motive- we can only see His handiwork. Wait until the end of the season- I highly doubt DK (or lolrets) will remain above rogues/warriors in representation. Have faith!

The alternative is they are so incompetent that they got the current train wreck by accident. I prefer Divine Interkalganization.

Sorry Roma, but R/M is FAR from a top tier combo atm. It actually never was that great compared to true top tier combos like war/druid.

There's currently only 4.5% rogue/mage in top SK-100 and with resilience going up and possible "burst" nerfs possibly coming up soon, that comp has nowhere to go but down. It's not a bad comp, but it simply has too many hard counters and too little margin for error to be top tier. At least they fixed stun resists in WoTLK, which screwed this comp more than any other.

Seems they dont want to go overboard with nerfs but burst dmg will definitly get a hit in the near future, which hurts teams like R/M the most.

I enjoy your blogs and all, but your hate against warriors hurts my feelings! It does feel good to get out with some frustration though.

Man U beat my team, Tottenham Hotspur, in the FA Cup on Saturday. Looks like you'll win the Prem again and Spurs will have to settle for just avoiding relegation! That's another joke of a competition - the Premierlol.

Why do you think that the tournament will be bad? good players playing good comps will result in good games. These aren't going to be 1500 warlocks dieing in cheap shots while their paladin sits in a sap, these are players who have figured out how to play WotlK arena instead of crying about it.

Desperately trying to think of something interesting to talk about and failing most of the time.
