It's been a long weekend. I just woke up from 14 hours of sleep as I wasn't able to sleep more than about 3-4 hours a night. But it's been great fun and an amazing experience for me. Syeren did a great job on Saturday and sadly he was busy on Sunday and I couldn't find a replacement fast enough. Doing it myself was nowhere near possible with the articles I wrote for Gotfrag. If you want to reread them to relive the emotions you had you can check them out here. And yes for some of us it was emotional. You can call me idiot for that if you want, it's no biggie. We were sitting with so many different pro players on Syeren's vent and even some of them were cheering if either SK.EU won a round or Check Six lost one. I still love you Twixz; he's a great guy.

Hearing what player's like Hydra, Kalimist, Spoh, Litre, Zyz, Trig, Ghingis and many more had to say about the games was amazing. Ensidia practised quite a bit with them on TR and therefore knew what SK.EU was capable of.

Complexity got two video interviews with Sodah & BHMS and you definitely want to check them out. Sodah seemed pretty upset but hey, they still qualified for Orlando. Hopefully the guys gained new confidence in their comp seeing how Button Bashers plays and could change a thing or two. You can find the interviews here: Sodah & BHMS. There are a ton more video interviews on complexitygaming.com you might want to check out.

Things that impressed me

  • Tenderloin not making himself look like the "oh well the footsteps of Kollektiv are gigantic" replacement. He played extremely well.
  • Azael attending with a team that was able to out-muscle Fnatic even though people weren't even expecting him to win more than one round. He almost made it in the final four. Also he was on par with Inflame in their series therefore putting himself on the list for players to watch out for.

  • Azael being baller enough to ask Soulja boi for a picture, sneaking in considering he thought he was one of the gunner guys, haha.
  • BHMS dancing off their LAN jitters and making it into the top 4. I didn't really believe that the wild card tournament was that high calibre but natural selection still sorts out the weak and only the fighters survive. Also a 15 year old just dancing off his nervousness and performing relatively amazing for his first event. Thumbs up.

  • Private Enigmz being able to not only to withstand the pressure their team mates put on themselves by proclaiming themselves the winner pre tournament, but also stomaching the harsh words from 4 star general Another mid games. Alright, he did flake some very important games but give the guy some rest. It was his first tournament.

  • You know it was coming: Button Bashers shutting up all the people who say WoW is not an e-sport and not a skill game. Also their sportsman ship and heart they put into this is absolutely amazing. This deserves another topic. Let me elaborate.

Button Bashers - the beauty of WoW

This topic will not be about how amazing these guys played. Of course I think they did, don't get me wrong. That was from another star, but what I wanted to talk about is a different topic. Nevertheless, you pro players should read this considering many many teams can learn from Button Bashers - outside the game. Let me elaborate.

To explain what I mean, I'll recap what happened from the moment they realized they had won the tournament:

The first player of SK.EU goes down and the Koreans start screaming from on top of their voice. They are so excited. They did it and they don't care if the look cool or if other players think they are retarded for screaming so loud.

The scoreboard pops up on their screens. Orangemarmalade, the team leader jumps up and the first thing he does is turning to his team mate Hiren, the Rogue that made all this possible. It's an honestly strong hug with sincere claps on each others backs. As they release, Orange turns to Numberone his other team mate and he high fives him and both have a big smile written all over their face.

As this ceremony of thanking the team mates is over, Hiren immediately sits down in front of his computer again. Nerd much? No. What he does is check all those Korean fan sites and he responds to fans that have been watching him the whole weekend. His smile is bright and wide and from time to time he starts giggling a bit as he pushes his glasses up his bridge.

SK.EU has packed all their stuff and is about to stand up
and in this moment, three Korean hands cross the table for a hand shake.

This is what WoW as an e-sports should be about despite the amazing coordination these guys had. It's an MMORPG after all - there is a social aspect. If I was a fan after Orange's interview on ArenaCast, you can consider me a groupie now. I still sincerely love Europe and Divine Inflame don't get me wrong. I just think that it wouldn't harm them to learn from Button Bashers at least a bit. I know you will be mad with what I just wrote general, this isn't my intention though. You guys were on par with Button Bashers individual skill wise. Maybe this can help you to beat them next time. Europe needs you.

WoWverload with more Arena action

Many people said that this tournament inspired them to play better and I can totally see why. If you still don't know why WoW is an e-sports worth playing, maybe WoWverload can help you out here as they will be showing arena non-stop from the last week of ESL qualifiers. Many amazing teams will be playing. Just to name a few: Hydra's RMP, Trig's Wizard Cleave, Bloodx and H2k gaming.

I will definitely tune in as I simply can't get enough after this weekend. You can see their freestream (with slightly better quality than the MLG free stream, heh) >>>here<<<. For less than a weekend of MLG stream, you can buy a month of ESL TV footage by the way. I bought both...

The show starts very soon and considering the speed Shader proof reads, chances are you should hit that link right away as it will be running most likely.

H2K with a new sponsored team

I saw it in your face, don't lie to me. "Who is this H2K team you just named with all those other awesome teams, fatty?" you thought and I will give you a hand here.

Lawdy, Rasenz and Naurii, the cleave team that you saw last week on WoWverload which smashed the majority of the teams they played against on stream have been picked up by the e-sports organisation H2K. You can find their news here.

How viable TSG will be in the future will be one of the major questions for the success of this team. As Alca pointed out in his best player/class in Europe blog, all these guys are up there with the big names. We will see how it turns out for them.

That's it for today. I feel like I forgot something. I'm sure it was important. Think Sascha, Think! What happened this weekend. AH!

Yiska out.

But orlando will only have 4 teams? and it looks like SK-USA are going to be in the top 4, which doesn't make any sense right now because they are playing horrible.

Wouldn't it be really "awesome" to see Another nerdrage on Inflame or Enigmz, the same way Swarm did on Serennia :I?
The funny thing is that it might actually happen someday, and if it does, I will be the first to laugh my ass off, whatever that means.

Anyways, I did think SK.EU would win this tourny seeing how their setup in S5 gear is as close to a cheesecomp as it can get, only getting outcheesed by X6, and also the fact that all three players are really good.
I guess BB are just that much better, especially as a team. And since it's hard to actually improve the team chemistry with a nerdrager in it (aka. Another). I'd say second place is the best they can ever hope for from now on, that is if BB attends the same tournament.

BHMS played the comp in a cheesey way. SK-EU actually went for kills and in alot of rounds/series', they happened with a gib.

I don't think WoW isn't a sport because there'sskill and sportsmanship... I think it isn't a sport because it requires absolutely no athleticism whatsoever. Muscle memory is not athleticism.

Chess is unarguably a sport by definition. Why isn't WoW?

What is the point of this discussion again? Being defined as a sport has no impact on anything whatsoever anyway. BB probably trained more than Olympia participants.

Is shooting a sport by your definition btw?

A sport, by defintion is

"An athletic activity requiring skill or physical prowess and often of a competitive nature"

The only part of that you can argue is that WoW isn't "athletic", but athletic by definition means

"To require physical ability"

The reflexes and quick decisions needed by pro wow players to win games is definitley a physical ability. This is why wow is a sport.

Muscle memory is not really a physical ability. Anyone can train their bodies to hit those keys that quickly - knowing which to hit takes skill to be sure, but that is beside the point. Is Super Mario for Nintendo a sport? Video games are not sports, and I strongly believe people say otherwise because they want to think of themselves as athletes when they've failed to succeed in other other sports.

I think it's rather the fact that most people realize that since we moved out of our caves, "mind sports" are more relevant to life or survival if you will. I think you would see things differently if you were born in Europe as the mind set of at least most people I know is "intelligence overrules physical strength". Your part of the world hands out sport college scholar ships like candy. The majority of our scholarships (90%+) are based on academic performance.  It's hard to explain, I hope you get the idea. I'd even claim that those mind games like chess and e-sports attract more intelligent people than your average sport does. Don't get me wrong, I'm a football fan myself.

Oh yeah btw, not literally everyone can train themselves to hit those keys as fast. It's about reflexes and a good chunk of it is pure talent. I could never push my response time under 0.1 sec for example.

Sports scholarships are not allowed in Canada, period. All scholarships in Canada are based on academic performance, and Canada has one of the highest rates of post-secondary education in the world.

I think you would see things differently if you were born in Europe as the mind set of at least most people I know is "intelligence overrules physical strength".

I think you would be surprised to see that the same mindset exists here. And I agree with you. But that doesn't make WoW a sport. And on that note, I don't think I've seen WoW come close to matching the level of pure, intelligent strategy as American Football.

I'd even claim that those mind games like chess and e-sports attract

I agree, but the logic seems a little flawed. I don't think it attracts more intelligent people, I believe that it appeals solely to a narrow demographic that tends to be more intelligent. Within that demographic (WoW players), I'd be willing to bet there are more people who follow American Football (in the US) or Football (in Europe) than there are who follow MLG. In other words, the reasons they follow esports is not because they're attracted to it intellectually.

I played in the top 5 during all the seasons I competed. Even as a pretty athletic guy, I was arguably better at WoW than I have been at my best sports. That experience is what has me decided they aren't in the same league. And I know that not that many professional gamers are fat, but skinny doesn't mean you're in good shape ;\

But that doesn't make WoW a sport.

No, it makes it an e-sport, which eventually will be Olympic.

And on that note, I don't think I've seen WoW come close to matching

I don't even know all rules for American Football so I won't comment on that.

Within that demographic (WoW players), I'd be willing to bet there are
more people who follow American Football (in the US) or Football (in
Europe) than there are who follow MLG

It's hard to compare since the schedule of tournaments is so different. If you mean they watch football every weekend than you're wrong. I happen to know the stream numbers and obviously I'm not allowed to share them but I'm pretty sure there are less football "fans" than people who tune in for a WoW tournament. As I said, it's not really comparable.

I played in the top 5 during all the seasons I competed. Even as a
pretty athletic guy, I was arguably better at WoW than I have been at
my best sports.

No you weren't. If you are top 5 in your BG, chances are you aren't even in the top 1000 in the world. You can not compare WoW on your BG to WoW at an offline tournament. Moreover I'm sure I'm better in about 10 sports than I am in WoW and I have 17% body fat. There are ridiculous Olmypic sports such as bow shooting. Basically every sport in which the athlete is not a professional (more than 30% of Olympic sports) is less of a competition or skill requirement than every Korean Starcraft tournament. Now WoW is a different story as the community has yet to learn what the game is about and people still don't play the game how it's meant to be played and therefore people who did understand it enjoy their easy ride to the money.

Keep in mind, equestrian is olympic. So is curling.

Yiska please tell me you aren't serious about this one. They're playing a game that hasn't even been out
for 5 years. You're insulting Olympians with this comment - most of
them have trained their entire lives in greater amounts than anyone
plays WoW.

What do I consider a sport? If training for a competition leaves you in
better physical shape than when you started, then it's probably a
sport. Training for WoW is the opposite of physical activity.

Shooting is pushing it, but yes. They train their bodies to skip heartbeats, develop a level of hand eye coordination few can attain, and develop a level of accuracy and stillness of movement that takes years of training. So yes.

It really doesn't matter, you're right, unless you value athleticism and don't think video games deserve to be placed in the same league of competition as real sports.

I happen to know a Olympia participant IRL and no he didn't train more than 6-10 hours a day the last 5 years (it's been out longer actually if you include beta.) I don't think you realize how ridiculously unprofessional some Olympic sports are.

They train their bodies to skip heartbeats, develop a level of hand eye
coordination few can attain, and develop a level of accuracy and
stillness of movement that takes years of training. So yes.

You realize most Korean SC progamers have planned out workouts etc.? I promise you that the hand eye coordination of an SC or even a CS player of the very top has more to do with talent and hard training and is harder to attain then shouting ever will be (unless we talk about biathlon). The amount of absolutely top notch players who are fat in e-sports is already pretty low. Playing Starcraft probably even burns more calories than shooting :)

It really doesn't matter, you're right, unless you value athleticism
and don't think video games deserve to be placed in the same league of
competition as real sports.

I'm pretty sure we will have e-sports games at Olympia in our life times. Keep in mind that Starcraft players already carried the olympian flag.

Actually I'm not even sure if I get North-American loltrolled here :/

Have to agree with the BB team spirit topic, its nice to see a WoW team with abit of emotion/enthusiasm for what they are doing and i find it annoying when people criticize them for it. They only really stand out because alot of WoW teams seem emotionless as if they cant handle talking over problems or sharing a good moment with team mates. I used to attend/watch alot of 1.6 Counter Strike lans and cheering, hi5'ing, congratulating a team mate after a good play or winning a round was a regular thing not something that made you look uncool.

If anyone switched over to the Halo3 dueing the event you would of noticed the same thing it just seems the majority of WoW players dont rly know how to socialy react with people.. could be because most of WoWs player base have skipped school/college, partys, work and friends for the last 4-5 years but thats only a guess ;\
