hi

Saints vs Chargers @ Wembley

Hello folks, Colonel Godsmak reporting in again to my friends here at Gameriot. I first wanted to say 'thanks' again to the Gameriot admins for removing another one of my blog posts titled, 'Ret nerfed into the world'. Why it was removed was beyond me. No one elses blog about Ret pallies being nerfed was removed, all I did was share my experiences and tell the tale of how us Retadins are getting shafted like usual. I don't really get the current censorship at Gameriot, but it is fairly frightening, especially with it being a American run company.

With that out of the way I just wanted to update all of my Europe and American fans of course about the game in London, England yesterday @ Wembley Stadium. The San Diego Chargers vs the New Orleans Saints treated the blokes in London to a high scoring, high paced game that show cased perfectly what American Football is all about. I didn't get to see the game but I saw the highlights, I was indeed pleased and this will make a huge mark in Europe. The final score was 37-32 with the Saints edging out the Chargers.

Wembley Stadium, a rather nice looking stadium, holds roughly 90,000 people. Total attendance for the foreign American Football game on Sunday: 83,226!! Not too shabby, especially to blokes and other Euros who cannot understand the game, mostly because it is just a completely different game to what they are used too, a game where you just kick the ball back and forth (Caveman ball).

Upcoming games

Fallout 3: I can't wait to try this game and fill the void of current boredom within WoW. Check out this blog by Crispy that describes Fallout 3 and the series along with a cool little video to go along with it. http://wowriot.gameriot.com/blogs/A-yell-out/Fallout-Retrospective

Call of Duty: World at War: Finally a new COD is being released Nov. 11th. If it runs like COD4 I will be one happy mo****a as I still played COD4 with friends practically every day messing around on pubs. The game takes place back in the WW2 era (yeah I know another WW2 game) but hey, it's new and it's ****in COD. GET DUTIED!cod5

I tell you what, the field was not in very good shape for football.  The grass was way too long and athe dirt way too soft; giant divots were ripping out of the ground everywhere.

Yeah, I saw that, regardless, American Football is made to be played any wheres.

I guess the field was even ****tier last year due to rain... what can you do, it's in London, worse weather than Seattle.

we have the orginal and best in europe ye
i followed cgs when it first started, they made css work for tv, and destroyed very good teams so they could have some stupid player draw thing where the players got picked instead of teams. they also had stupid names like 'optx' for the teams.
you can keep your made for tv sports, we are just fine with our way thx.

I was at Wembley stadium last night watching the game myself, the game its self was pretty decent, i expected it to be the same as last year.

Heavy Rain
Slow Game
Cold Feet and Hands
Clock watching

I had a top tier seat again which is always nice, the game was good, high scoring, bit slow paced due to the amount of yard penalties which were given but none-the less i enjoyed myself again.

The half time performance was so bad, i have never enjoyed the stereophonics and that made me hate them even more.

The "Saintsentions"  were terrible at dancing although i would not kick them out of bed if hey farted.

NFL will not make it big in the UK as it is way to commericialised and we already have an egg shaped ball game which has his history and roots here.

Pretty much this.

Personally, I think the broad range of skills possessed by the best soccer players is greater than the raw athleticism of American football. As for it catching on, soccer won't catch on in the United States for 3 reasons.

1) Soccer existed well before most other professional sports, more importantly it originated outside of NA and the best teams are now located internationally. The following doesn't exist in the US to get the best players. Compare that to the four most popular spots; Football, Basketball, Baseball, Hockey.

2) Not enough time for commercials, good luck getting major networks to carry it :P

3) To be honest, I think the pace is too slow for American culture. I don't find it boring but I see why some people do. I love watching all the things that fall into place to set up a goal :)

1) true

2) the amount of commercials is quite terrible in the US if all networks have the same system as CNN (breaks atleast every 10 minutes, sometimes every 5 and very unpredictable). We have some regulations on commercial breaks and Jesus, I'm thankful for it

3) the stop-and-go system of NFL seems to be much slower than football

The stop-and-go seems boring but it's very American (and Canadian too). Imagine; an hour long game, you only actually need to watch it for 5-10 minutes to not miss anything, and when you do watch it you're far more likely to see something significant. Instant gratification! And yeah, there are a lot of commercials in Football, the sport

It requires a lot more patience to watch soccer. Basketall is constant scoring so I can see why it's big in the US. I think Baseball is terrible though, but again it's a game you only need to half pay attention to. I'm suprised hockey hasn't caught on  more in the US though. Blisteringly fast pace, fighting, lot of shots. I guess it low scoring? I've been to Baseball games and you can disappear for a while and not miss much. During a pro Hockey game I can't bring myself to get up for a beer unless it's intermission.

Can't really see how "soccer" requires more patience - maybe you do the mistake and only value a match by the amount of goals, which is terribly wrong. A game can be highly entertaining, but end 0:0

But overall you might have a point, because you spend 2x45 minutes infront of your tv/in your seat in a stadium and watch the game.. maybe it's a problem in a country where everything is crafted to match the ridiculous amount of commercial breaks your audience is used to. On German TV, you either have close to zero breaks (public tv) or a break every 30 minutes (private tv, regulated) - so paying attention for 45 minutes isn't anything unusual.

Yes, in North America people do make that mistake. Most people here don't appreciate everything that needs to fall into place for a good attack, or what goes into preventing one. The star aspect isn't their either. In North American sports, like Football, there is a lot of emphasis put onto the individual and you can usually expect to see a team's star outperform everyone else. In Soccer, even the best players can go through a game unnoticed.

If they wanted to make Soccer a little more enjoyable, the best thing to do would be to implement some sort of "icing" policy. It's a rule in hockey where once you get possession of the puck in your own end you can't just dump it down the ice to thwart an attack, you actually have to handle it out or else there's a faceoff in your own end. In soccer you can totally just dump it back out, which I find makes the game too defensive.

"In Soccer, even the best players can go through a game unnoticed."

Totally wrong, "soccer" is a team game, sure, but why do you think some players are national heroes if they don't matter? Look at Maradona in Argentina, Pelé in Brazil, Zidane in France, Beckenbauer in Germany and so on.. much hype about individual players all around the world.

The rules you mentioned don't work for us, one great aspect of the game is how diverse tactics are.. some teams don't give a damn about defense while others play destructive but effective with many tactics in between. That aspect is especially important for World Cups: Brazil is technically skilled, Italy a defensive powerhouse, Spain a master of deadly passes, Germany shows team spirit etc.

Oh, not arguing those players are much better than the others on their team, but compare it to Football or Hockey. Not saying the Soccer teams don't have their stars, but I don't see the kind of domination I sometimes do in other sports. In 2005/6 Mats Sundin, starting Centre for Toronto had 58 pts, compared to Sidney Crosby of the Pittsburg Penguins. I don't see anyone in the premier league now outperforming their peers by that margin, that's all.

The rules I mentioned pertained to the USA and their Major League Soccer. They don't work for you, but I'm sure they would work to increase spectator support there. It would be interesting to see (if it gains popularity) if players would refuse to join Americans teams (who would be 'dumbing down' the sport) or go where the money is.

You're an idiot Lowtide, the only team thats even remotely bad in Detroit are the Detroit lions.

Pistons are one of the best in the NBA and have a very legit chance at contending for championship every year,  Redwings (hockey lol) are the best in the NHL and one of the best NHL teams of all time, and the Detroit tigers have a rich history and a few championships as well, not to mention they were in the world series like a year ago.

Detriot was actually ranked in the top 3 for sports on some ESPN article a while ago.

To be fair, NFL Europe just sucked compared to the real one.. NFL should learn a lesson from that and promote the US-league, while simultaneously introduce another NFL Europe. Not that I care about NFL, but maybe some do.

It's the same the other way around. FIFA should make an effort to promote European leagues in USA to help MLS being somewhat less ****ty.

True.

With that said, some guys have gone over to NFL Europe and honed their skills deeming themselves worthy to be put back in NFL USA, so they were signed and some have done fine in the NFL USA from there.

As for MLS, only way to save MLS is if we get more Beckhams. Not going to happen, Football all around the world, not just Europe, has too much history, is way more promoted and way more honed than here. I remember playing HS football/baseball and most of the soccer players were football/baseball rejects who either couldn't hack hell week in football and take a hit, or couldn't bat/throw/field worth **** in baseball. So they played soccer where the team maybe had 5 people on it who were super into it and were good, rest were just rejects who needed to play something and soccer was it.

That's how it mostly is over here. The 2 years I played soccer and learned the game back when I was a lot younger was tons of fun. I'm glad I did because I learned a lot of the little stuff that I can relate too when I watch professional soccer and the world cup. After 2 years I was way more pressured and interested in baseball/football however :)

MLS is doing better than NFL Europe (shut down).. basketball and ice hockey both have a good amount of fans in Europe though. Maybe our sports market is full already.

More Beckhams: Ronaldinho had a similar offer by LA Galaxy. He rejected.. MLS needs own players, maybe it could be a first stop for South American talents. Some promotion matches between European top clubs on American soil could help aswell.

Otherwise, football probably just doesn't fit into American culture well enough to become an important pastime.

Wow NFL Europe is shut down? ROFL I honestly didn't know, I just know the Cowboys picked up some LB awhile back from there and he didn't do too bad, as well as a few other teams.

See, this is the problem right here, why the **** would Ronaldinho go? I don't see any reason honestly, for Beckham, his career is at the end, his wife is all about Hollywood and apparently he is too, **** I would be too if I was his age and wanted to make as much money as possible for my life/family. I can't see any reason for players who still got a lot left in them like; Kaka, Thierry, Ronaldinho and Eto'o coming to a second rate league like the MLS.

As for South American prospects, we have American versions of South American teams, so yes that is already being done. Overall South Americans are better than the USA at soccer but what is sad is we can beat and compete with most of them nowadays and even a few Euros :) We'll just most likely never be the best.

European basketball teams (Spain, Greece) can compete with USA, their leagues still suck compared to NBA.

Beckham didn't starve in Europe, the thing is he may keep his marketing rights in LA, so he makes a fortune just by selling merchandise to all those fanatic girls. Here your club atleast holds 50% of your marketing rights. I'd guess Ronaldinho earns around $25m at the moment - not the top earner anymore, but it should cover the expenses.

Yeah Spain and Greece are good teams as well as Australia, for sure. But all I know is, our best completely slaughtered everyone in the Olympics and that is how it should be, the last Olympics with our USA 'Dream team' was ******* pathetic, no team work just egos. This year, they did it like it should. That's how it is with Football... USA vs France, Italy, Argentina, Brazil and probably still even Germany, we would most likely get beat bad, but that is obvious, just like basketball.

All I know is Beckham makes bank and it isn't just from Football haha, lucky ****.

NFL Europe was ok. it was a worth a try not gonna lie. MLS is well....awful. My problems with it are simple. Its too Americanized with how they run the league. Its the same format as the NFL and Baseball. I wish it was a longer season where every team played eachother for a League cup then have tournaments go on during the season like all the other leagues in the world. I believe it would make the game more enjoyable by creating more games for people to watch increasin revenue (maybe idk im jsut throwing it out there).

Kind of a cool fact though Soccer is the #1 youth sport in America right now. No matter where you go there are soccer leagues. I live in a kind of a big city in Connecticut and everyday during the spring and summer at everypark there are is organized youth leagues going on. Its makes me happy seeing that. Hopefully in the next 20-30 years soccer will actually be a bigger sport here and taken seriously. Its only a matter of time.

Lastly on the MLS and big named stars I found out the other day Freddy Ljungberg of Arsenal fame jsut signed a contract with the Seattle MLS team. Freddy is by no means old or at the end of his career which actually would be exciting to see as i like him as a player and could show the MLS what Dutch youth system can do. I wish the MLS had a system like many of the big euro clubs have. Ive been through the equivalent which is ODP (Olympic development Program) which is for the national team and a very very very long process consisteing of "camps" you go through to prove your worthy to move on and eventually the national team (didnt make it, blown knee, but 2 of our guys made it all the way and played with Freddy adu before he got famous and proved he was a *****) but its nothing CLOSE to their system. If the MLS had something like that i bet there would be more star homegrown players and attract more of an audience here.

I never followed NFL Europe (why would I?) and I do not follow MLS at all. If I want to watch a good Soccer match I will throw on ESPN2 for some Euro matches or some Spanish station for South America. You're probably right about MLS, but eh what you going to do at this time?

I did not know this and that is pretty interesting. I highly doubt that is true for the more competitive High School and College levels though, only been 7 years since I suited up for HS game and I remember how it was back then and I know how it is now locally here. Everyone goes to the Friday night Football games, I don't hear anything about soccer. HS Baseball is only popular (fans wise) in the first game and the last remaining games. Football every Friday hehe.

Sorry about the knee, sucks man. Many peoples careers are ended throughout every sport from the knee, very complex joint area. So why is Freddy going to ******* Seattle? For one, Seattle sucks, it's almost as bad as London's weather and second of all, WHY THE MLS? I mean, America is cool and all and a very pleasant place to be, but why Seattle lol? Did he not like what he saw with Arsenal or anyone else? I just can't see why big names would want to go with the MLS, I ******* wouldn't unless I was at the end of my career and wanted to see what America was all about (life style living wise) :P

Honestly i have no idea. Some euro players have been quoted as saying they would like to play in america before they end their careers. I just dont get it though. As i see it its like move to the US prolly get paid more money fizzle out after 2 seasons because your team sucks major balls and your career ends. OR stay in europe play for one of the storied teams out there thats bee naround for 100+ years and be immortalized for generations. Idk about you but id pick europe in a heartbeat.

As for Hs sports yes soccer has yet to be fully recognized. Then again Its fully accepted in areas where the team is disgusting which is usually top 20 in the nation (next town over from where i am the high school team was #8 in the nation for a year....till we beat them in the league cup 4-3 over time). I remember our school team was pretty good and we were a powerhouse in our league. Our football team was ****in special olympics and sucked so friggen hard yet more people went to the football games but it was more widely accepted. Like i said though give it a couple years and im confident it will be bigger on all levels.

Yea the knee is a very complex joint. Ive gone through 3 surgerys for it so far. 2 ACL reconstructions and 3 Meniscus reconstructions...Just had to stay in high school, no i couldnt go to scotland (stupid family and their "education first" lol).Ohh well though ill coach while i Teach history so it wont be too bad : P.

Freddy Ljungberg isn't the same anymore.. he should stick to making Calvin Klein commercials. But maybe you're right and his experience helps. Also, MLS has indeed a terrible system (playoffs etc).. I once read an interview with Klinsmann (former coach of Germany and now of FC Bayern Munich, he lived in Cali for some years and worked with Galaxy) saying something like "Americans don't understand football as we do, they don't get that football isn't a coach game, but a players game" - a football coach has little influence during games apart from a half time break and 3 substitutes unlike in every American sports.

Is there a Champions League for the Americas? Like US clubs playing against South American clubs?

Every player that matters plays in Europe, that will be the main problem for MLS.

Yea they do actually Dub. Concacaf Champions league its called now. Its interesting to watch sometimes...too bad the MLS teams get their **** pushed in by the Mexican teams haha.

Freddy has declined some over the years but hes still top quality and is better then whats here. Im hoping he pulls a Juan pablo Angel and ends up being disgusting here as i thought he was good at Arsenal.

I think ive seen that quote from klinnsman and hes right. It is a players game. I read a quote from sepp blatter the FIFA pres back when MLS was forming that went something like " The MLS is terrible. It is a disgrace to the game and should be abolished immediatly". Do i agree wioth that? Yes and no. I hate the MLS but I feel it needs to be changed from its current form to make it better and more exciting like hockey did recently and make it appeal to a wider audience. It is sadly needed for Soccer to grow in this country so we are stuck with it. Though i do get a kick when My Chelsea Blues come over and play the MLS "allstars" and **** em up.

lmao great quote, Blatter really cares about his diplomatic role as FIFA president. That Concacaf stuff needs to be expanded to Brazil and Argentina.. but I guess traveling would be a pain in the butt.

That would be really bad if concacaf wasn't in Brazil/Argentina, seeing as how some of the best in the world come from there.

Anyone who is ignorant would say this, you have no ******* clue.

And people compare it to rugby only because both are contacts sports than use a similar ball. Too bad their styles are WAY different. Go compare and look you dumb caveman.

Both sports (rugby / american football) are very tough and physical, but in different ways.

American football has more specialized athletes that are "fresher" for each hit due to the stop-and-go nature of the game.

Rugby has less specialized athletes, playing a more grueling game that almost never stops, and they can't hit each other nearly as hard because they will be injured.

Rugby players have to be more well-rounded "tough guys," but the level of physical violence and impact in American football is far greater.   It is both caused by and the reason for the pads.  Take the pads away, and the game has to slow down and get less violent, or the players could not survive it.

Pretty much spot on. Unfortunately people are too blinded by their American hate/jealousy to even recognize this common sense.

Nice argument there buddy.

I raped you on the subject, anyone who thinks American Football is a ***** sport is just a bias nuthugger of their own country who thinks everything their country does is the greatest thing since sliced bread.

OH ****!

As a hardcore physical sport, Rugby > American PillowFights (sorry football)

ANYONE WHO DISAGREES IS AMERICAN (i think thats insult enough tbh)

Apples to plums but since you want to compare here you go:

Both games aren't even the same. Yes there are big hits in Rugby, but it just isn't the same caliber. What we call Rugby in America is playing backyard football without pads, AKA, Smear the Queer.

So I guess this is your queue to shutting the **** up now.

Apples to plums

Correct. Rugby players are apples, American Footballers are plums. Plums surrounded by pillows. With a helmet.

It doesn't matter how hard you hit a pillow... you're still just hitting a pillow.

So i guess this is your queue to pad up.
