I was reading WoW Insider today and came across an article talking about faction pride. Do WoW players have faction pride? On PvP servers, maybe, but I doubt that most players really care beyond looks. I mean, in a PvE game, what does faction even count for outside of the aesthetic?
In these times of lull for World of Warcraft, sites like that are really digging. Re-hashing age old arguments, making points already made, starting argument-like “discussions.” I don’t blame them per se but honestly, I don’t see why that question is even being posed. The author states,
“What interests me more is how rarely we see this question come up nowadays”
Why should it? What does faction count for on a “normal” realm (which presumably most people play on – non-pvp at least) other than giving players a new story. You see a lot of “For the Horde”’ing going on but I always took that as more of a nod to the common closing statement of many quest givers.
The only time faction “pride” comes into play is for PvP and the occasional competition. Apart from that, what is there to be proud of, everyone completing the same quests? Seriously pwn’ing Hogger? I’m sure some people get it—but for me, if there’s no competition, there’s nothing to be proud of.

Just a tip, use a vertical and horizontal border of 3-4 in the options when you insert a picture. Then the image doesnt bump right in to text and look like crap.

I haven't seen faction pride outside of the realm forum since Vanilla WoW. And even there, it tends to be, "your raid progression is ****," or, "Wintergrasp outnumbered 5 to 1 GG..."

i see LOTS of "fukking alliance basterds" comments in trade chat. probably mostly little kids but hey its still there. the older you get and the more you play, the more you realize it doesnt actually matter though.

Once cross realm battlegrounds started, "Faction Pride" died.
When you could only BG against the other faction on your server, there was actually a reason to hate the other side. You were in competition with them every day in PvP, and it often spilled over to PvE, through progression bragging rights and world PvP to prevent other guilds from engaging in PvE.

This is why I found WoW more entertaining in its early days. Everything's more engaging and interesting in a closed loop, and by actually limiting yourself to one server, the "world" of warcraft seems more like a world and less like a bunch of nameless players you happen to bg/arena against.

**** the Alliance.
Back in TBC we had a lot of competition with an Alliance guild for Server firsts, but it was a lot more personal with the Horde 2nd guild (who we passed in early T5 content. Couldn't quite catch up to the Alliance 1st guild, were always on the same boss (Vashj/Kael/etc) but they got it a week before us or so.
I'm not someone who ganks every red name out there (mostly for selfish reasons, I don't want to get counterganked and waste my time when I'm trying to farm or finish a quest), but if you attack me first, I'll camp the **** out of you.
Ganking and world PVP still exists, it's just not what people do the majority of the time when they're in endgame. WG has brought back a lot of that sentiment, many Horde on my server care deeply about preventing the Allies from getting WG every single battle they can (it helps that we're successful at defending about 50-75% of the time).
Again:

Faction pride still exists among the casuals. It isn't uncommon to see people say, "lol alliance sucks" in BGs. But most of the faction stuff died out..especially among gamers.

Carebear cities ruined faction hate imo. Also after the AV changes, and SOTA, its hard to not realize which faction Blizzard favors more.
