As I generally do with big releases of games I planned to spend a bit of time with Dragon Age today and pass off some reviews for you guys to wade through if you may be sitting on the fence over this solid Bioware-produced RPG.  I'll get to a full review eventually but with vacation coming up and too many games I don't have time to knock one out quite yet.

I, being the smart person that I am, picked this up on PC unlike some people.  Gamebynight does have a solid preview though (see last link) that you should definitely check out.  I don't see how you could play something like this on a console to be perfectly honest, no matter how modified the control system.  The IGN review embeded below pretty much confirms my thoughts that it is a very different game on the console thanks to the controls and pacing.  Those of you with crappy PCs should probably just upgrade.  :)

1920x1200, try getting your 360 to run that (down-scaled).  :)
Reviews are solid so far with the game pulling a 91.21% on Gamerankings.com.  The PS3 is scoring slightly below that in the 90's and the 360 is coming in around 89.

IGN - 9/10
GameSpot - 9.5/10
1UP - A
GameTrailers - 9.1/10
GameSpy - 4.5/5
Eurogamer - 8/10

Eurogamer per the usual comes in tied with the lowest review of the day so far.  I'm not saying they are hard-***** or anything but let's just say Tom Cruise is a big fan of their work.  They generally cut the B.S. though so I can appreciate them for that.

So far I like it.  Graphically it is a sharp game though not as taxing as I would have thought earlier this year.  It runs great on my suped-up rig so no issues in that regard.

Gameplay wise I can't give a full judgment in that regard quite yet not being very far in.  The pause button is definitely your best friend on the PC and pretty much a must use.  You can't really go hacking and slashing on in without a bit of tactic as the game moves on so taking time to pause and get situated is a key aspect to surviving.  I do wish there was more of a action/combat queue and if this is something that expands later on feel free to correct me.  I generally don't like to plan only one step at time.

I definitely look forward to spending more time with this in the coming weeks if I can pull myself away from Left 4 Dead 2 and Modern Warfare 2.

Thoughts and impressions?  What do you guys think of the game so far?

Because the publisher wants people in the UK to pirate the game, it is released on the 6th rather than the 3rd. They are very clever and not at all unbelievable morons.

how does it make any sense that if I want to play dragon age origins the only person providing this service are SUPAR PIRATES rather than the actual sellers? :/

He said 150, but I'm hearing from most people on GFAQS that it's possible to finish everything in 80.

If you go hardcore, what game can't you finish in 80 hrs?

Oh and btw, Bioware makes Dragon Age...

That made no sense.

and. . .I know it's made by Bioware. Not really a fan of KotR, Mass Effect, etc. *puts up flame shield*

(Kotor2 was awesome though.)

So are you saying 80hrs to finish a game is short? I asked, what game can't you finish in 80 hrs? If you go hardcore, it shouldn't be hard to finish any game... technically.

Yes Bioware who created Baldurs Gate, is a great company, I am not a fan of Kotor or whatever, haven't played Mass Effect but heard great reviews.

No. According to the video, the reviewer is 150+ hours in the game still playing it. I'm just saying that I heard its possible to finish the whole storyline within 80 hours, that's all.

I beat it in ~40 hours, but I did skip many of the side quests (I was not aware you could not go back after you beat it)

i want to play this game, it sounds great.  it's rare for games to actually be better on pc than console nowadays, and part of me wants to buy it just to support good pc games.

My computer passes all the reccomended settings for this game but I wouldn't dare **** on the Dragon Age experience by relying on a PC.

For reference sake when I play TF2 I have every setting and resolution at the lowest and my game looks like absolute ******* **** and get 10-20 FPS dropping to 5 if there is more than 1 person around and like 1-2 when at least 1 Pyro is around.

I can only imagine what I'm going to have to look at with Dragon Age so again...**** that.

I post minimum specs on various games from time to time and that is one habit I wish the gaming industry would ditch.  The recommended specs, that some post, should be what is posted if you ask me.  Who wants to struggle and ruin their experience with the bare minimum?

The only thing I'm missing is the Top Down view for better tactical advantages and the toolset that comes with the PC version....both would be nice to have..neither would be worth having a choppy more than likely ugly game to look at.

Everyone I've asked about the difference say there clearly is one, but not nearly enough to say I'm missing out on anything.

It's a no contest if you had my computer..seriously I would have to deal with choppy gameplay and terrible graphics.

That butchers a game for me way more than stupid menus and the fail which can be Xbox360.

Borderlands is a buttload of fun. Make it this way: if you have buddies around that are willing do play Borderlands with you, do so. Whenever they are not around and you have the time, go for Dragon Age, since Borderlands is slightly less of an experience when playing alone.

Borderlands is awesome and unique, but it gets old a lot faster than most would expect.

Got it yesterday and liking it so far. Too bad my laptop is a POS and I'm getting some bad stutter. It's probably because I refuse to set the settings to anything below high. It's not too bad though, just waiting on a video card to come around so I can build my rig. Only complaint so far, and it's most likely because settings aren't maxed, is that some of the textures blow hard. Not that I'm a graphics *****, but when you have outstanding character models but bleak objects it ruins immersion slightly.

I run everything maxed and the textues still blow.

Its a bit comical playing with character models from 2010 and environment textures circa 1992

I'm running a 7900 gtx (below reccomended), with everything else very much above reccomended...my 9800 gx2 died this summer...and I am running on high setting with absolutely no issues at all. Game looks awesome imo.

There is a lot of dialogue, but that is to be expected from a Bioware game. The game really draws you in, and most of the surroundings are really amazing and feel alive. Characters are really well done as well. Morrigan is just an awesome character.

I'm enjoying it so far, and I'm only about 5 hours in.

I preordered the deluxe download version on Steam.  A lot of people including myself initially, had issues getting the 2 pay modules to download with the game, which came with the deluxe.  Along with the bonus items for preorder/deluxe editions.  I know their forums had a lot of angry people.

I was really pissed off over all of the registering i had to do before being able to play the game.  I mean why are they forcing me to register to some EA social beta site, create a social profile, just to play a single player?  Even the DA key, and preorder key inputting was very wishy washy, and wouldn't allow me to cut and paste it.  It was just retarded to me that i had to go through so much bull**** after already waiting a long time for the download to finish, just to play the game.

After all of that i got to play for about an hour or two last night.  I didn't get very far.  I realized its going to be very cut scene text heavy, which i should've known from KOTOR and Mass Effect.  Tthe voice acting is superb, so its more tolerable at least.  I made a Mage and spent a lot of time choosing between abilities to puts points in. I think i let the hype kind of get to me where i was thinking it would blow me away, but it was a little bittersweet when i realized it was going to be more similar to KOTOR/ME than something completely new or revolutionary in the genre.
