Most of the press conferences at E3 2009 are now a thing of the past and it is time to take a look and what worked, what didn't, who won and and who slipped up.  I did this last year as well if you want to see those results.  These are your E3 winners and losers.

The Biggest Announcement

I have to go with the announcement of Final Fantasy 14.  This shocked pretty much everyone at the show and it was one of the few things that didn't leak out in advance.  Square-Enix has stated it may eventually come to 360 but for now it is launching on the PS3 and PC in 2010.  With FF13 not even out yet this announcement was definitely a shocker.

I think FFXIV was followed closely by Microsoft's Natal, even if I think it is less practical than Sony's motion controls.  As a tech demo it was impressive and you can see Microsoft's roots and genius as a software company.  The third biggest announcement had to be Metroid Other M and the fact that Team Ninja is working with Nintendo on it.  Quite the interesting collaboration between the family friendly Nintendo and the over-the-top blood and guys Team Ninja.

The Best conferences in order

I got some slack last year for my Sony support but I own all the damn consoles now so hopefully that helps the non-bias cause.

Sony - Games games and more games.  Sony had a ton of titles to show off and plenty of "true" exclusives.  I really think the only complaint we can have of Sony this is a lack of a price cut and existing owners really don't care about that.  From God of War 3, Heavy Rain, Uncharted 2, MAG, The Last Guardian, Final Fantasy 14, Rockstar's Agent, and Mod Nation Racers they blew Microsoft out when it came to exclusives.  The PSP Go was a solid announcement that should help bring portable gaming closer to the digital distribution front.  And to top if off their motion controls seemed practical and worthwhile.

Microsoft - While Microsoft brought out what they like to call "exclusives", the fact is many of them are on PC as well (Mass Effect 2, Alan Wake, Left 4 Dead 2, Splinter Cell) and I will play them there.  Metal Gear Rising was announced but we know that will be on the PS3 as well.  The only "true" exclusive that is seemed like a must buy for me on 360 as I don't play Halo was Forza 3.  Natal is very impressive however and some day down the road it could really be doing big things.  Is Reach and ODST enough to satisfy the Halo fanboys?

Nintendo
- Nintendo didn't fail nearly as hard this year as last year.  Thankfully.  It was looking a bit bleak after the Super Mario Brothers Wii announcement (which my folks on the show floor say is amazing) but Mario Galaxy 2 and Metroid Other M where great saving graces.  They focus so much on the DS (I don't blame them, number selling system in the world) and I just kind of zone out when it comes to that.  The above three games sound like must buys however and I couldn't find one must buy in last year's show.

Yes, Sony again this year.  Overall these are probably A-, B+, and B- if I had to rank them grade wise in that order.  I felt Sony came with better games overall and more of them.  The motion controls are an interesting battle so lets discuss that a bit more.

The Battle of the motion controls

This deserves its own sub-section as everyone was on the motion controlled bandwagon this year.  Nintendo continued to hype Motion Plus which last year looked cool and now this year it looks mediocre at best compared to Microsoft's Natal and Sony's demonstration.  Natal was far and away the most impressive technologically of the three, I won't argue that.  Sony's however seemed to have the most practical in-game uses and seemed like it could actually make it in to some key games and not just be an afterthought.  From sword play to FPS action the Sony wand-like thingy seemed like something I would use.  Honestly as cool as Natal looks I don't want to stand around flailing my arms with nothing in them just to be "realistic".  Natal may offer the most depth and options with their motion based camera but Sony seems to have won the "usability" department.

Best Gameplay Video

God of War III has moved up from best teaser to best gameplay of this year's show.  We have wanted to see this in action other than the few glimpses of cinema trailers and SCE Santa Monica delivered.  Note that there is more gameplay footage other than this sole video and you can view more here.  March is going to be an awesome birthday when this bad boy lands.

Best Video w/o Gameplay

I was torn on this one.  A part of me wanted to choose Final Fantasy 14 but has gameplay even if its just cinema.  This Metal Gear Rising trailer however is all teaser and it features Raiden.  Raiden may be loathed by many but I actually like him.  I can't wait to use that incredible cyborg suit in the game.  When we all saw those previews of Metal Gear Solid 4 you can't tell me you didn't instantly want to use Raiden and wield swords with that kind of deadly precision.

The worst No Shows

This one is easy.  Half Life 2 Episode 3 oh where the hell are you?  I've *****ed in the past, I brought it up in my E3 PC preview and we still have nothing but a few images of concept art in the past few years.  I don't know what is going at Valve other than Left 4 Dead 2 but your fan base is clamoring for a return of the greatest PC franchise!

Stupidest thing seen or heard at the show

Um, what the hell is this Nintendo Wii Vitality Sensor?  A Wii add-on that helps you relax and can read your heart rate?  Stupid Nintendo... and you just know this **** will probably sell by the truckload.

And last but not least, Best Game

This wasn't an easy choice either.  I measure best game by the title I am most excited to play that was shown at E3, not necessarily the one that will sell the most or get the best rankings from the critics.  Last year it was Left 4 Dead, this year it could almost be Left 4 Dead 2.  However we are closing in on the home stretch for Final Fantasy 13 and the actual gameplay shown and new cinematic elements have me really stoked to finally play this game.  The announcement of a spring 2010 release date (about f-ing time) was icing on the cake.

That is a wrap on this year's conferences.  I'll be churning out some more E3 related news still in the next day or two as the show wraps up.

I've heard recently that PS3 prices are going to drop relatively soon, any bases for this or is it just speculation?

There is that big one.  A few rumors regarding it.  They are waiting for their current stock to sell out before releasing this and cutting the price.  Or it may come at a trade show later in the year.

Hard to say, quite a few people expected it this week.

Well SW:TOR didn't feature any gameplay so it ruled it out of that category.  It is probably right up with the Metal Gear Rising though as a cinematic it definitely was superior with the whole Jedi vs. Sith battle.

I guess as it didn't happen at one of the big shows I didn't give it as much credit.

Games that are out now?  Or coming out in the future?

MGS4, Little Big Planet (if you like platformers), Drakes Uncharted, and Killzone 2 are must haves imho.

You could make cases for Resistance 2, and InFamous as well.   Street Fighter 4 and Resident Evil 5 aren't on PC yet.

Outright the most shocking announcement I'd say was FFXIV. The crowd thought he had his numbers wrong and were almost laughing at him before the trailer. The information given in the Square-Enix Q&A today has got me even more stoked for it. I'm almost tempted to reactivate FFXI just for kicks. (Despite the fact that many have complained its a grind-heavy game the music and atmosphere is truly one of a kind)

Project Natal had me a little freaked out, I think its a great premise, but it seems like games are going the way of reality simulating reality which is fine. But soon there's going to be a "The Sims Motion" and that's about where I draw the line. I kinda found Molyneuax's whole 'Project Milo' to be more creepy than anything.

I think it's a close-tie between Sony and Microsoft as to who did best. I am really not interested in MAG and the '256 reasons to play'. I'd say what ultimately drops the ball for Microsoft is that they're marketing Halo: ODST as its own game, when the multiplayer is essentially Halo 3 with a map pack added in. Halo: Reach I'm interested in, but Square-Enix gave more information on FFXIV than Bungie did on Halo: Reach.

Either way, no matter what console you love, I've gotta say it looks like it's going to be a good year for gamers. It's good that E3 is finally back to its normal 'anything can happen' self. Even though I personally was hoping for an FFVII remake and an excuse to buy a PS3

FFXI is a big ass time sink to even do anything in the game.

But the devs challenged you with their PvE and you had to be very skilled to operate as a successful LS. That's one thing they do over WoW.

And you had to perform your PvE in front of others, i liked it, it strengthened the competition and community. Community was way better than WoW's too.

Devs couldnt balance the classes worth **** though when all it was is PvE.

Sequels are all the rage.  Have been the past couple of years.  And now motion controls are the new sequel, everyone does them.

Mass Effect 2 mentioned.  I forgot to list it among the 360 games that are on PC.  And no, I love Bioware.  I did a whole blog the other day on SWTOR.  It is just so far off that it doesn't have me super excited yet.

Maybe I just hate how the game industry is transforming, your blog summed up the fact that you can just keep remaking **** that you did good on awhile ago and people will keep buying the brand.

Which kind of sucks since I'm going into this industry I better get used to putting Final Fantasy/Metal Gear and Super _______ to all my titles.

Check the Q&A mostly about the Smuggler class from Bioware, they had a few interviews done, as well as Mass Effect 2 having its full length trailer, I think they did a couple interviews too. You've gotta really search around for good interviews, they're out there, it's just not all posted on the E3 website.

I know at E3 they covered those games, I was asking Slapnuts why he barely gave them mention.

It was retarded seeing him rep ANOTHER metal gear solid and (dear god) ANOTHER final fantasy like we haven't had enough of those already.

I really liked Sony's conference, they had a lot to show this year. Good, tangible reasons to buy a PS3, and we didn't even get to see any Agent footage whatsoever. Only gripe is no mention of a PS3 slim or a price drop, internet rumor mills seem to be saying they want to wait until the current stock of PS3s on store shelves dwindles a bit until they talk about either of those.

Oh Slapnuts, you underestimated the MS Juggernaut once again. MS has their own OS, why would they make anything "exclusive". Even if a game goes to PC, MS gets more money. As long as Windows has such a huge marketshare Microsoft will not have "exclusive" titles barring some awkward Xbox title that doesn't port well.

So why would should I be excited about games on the 360 that I can play on vastly superior PC?

I don't.  I totally get what Microsoft is doing but their 360 just isn't blowing me away at this point.

*Halo: Reach

And im disappointed in no PS3 price cut or a slimmed down version (assuming the leaked photots were real) of the system as well.

The PS conference was classy. I sold my Xbox way back after it broke twice, and I realised everything (or most of the things) I wanted for it were on PC. But the PS conference, wow. I'll be picking up a PS3 pretty soon to compliment the PC stuff. If only for Uncharted man!

The uncharted 2 multiplayer beta launched last night and I love it.  The controls/gameplay are intuitive, graphics stellar and the networking seems to be top notch.

Not a fanboy, as fanboys have blind brand loyalty for stupid reasons.  I just prefer the PS3 hardware (who doesnt), free online play (my PC roots there) and generally there are more franchises on the system that are favs (GOW, GT, Final Fantasy).

Im a fanboy of gaming in general, but not a specific system.  I spend more time gaming on my PC then anything.
