Most of the press conferences at E3 2009 are now a thing of the past and it is time to take a look and what worked, what didn't, who won and and who slipped up.  I did this last year as well if you want to see those results.  These are your E3 winners and losers.

The Biggest Announcement

I have to go with the announcement of Final Fantasy 14.  This shocked pretty much everyone at the show and it was one of the few things that didn't leak out in advance.  Square-Enix has stated it may eventually come to 360 but for now it is launching on the PS3 and PC in 2010.  With FF13 not even out yet this announcement was definitely a shocker.

I think FFXIV was followed closely by Microsoft's Natal, even if I think it is less practical than Sony's motion controls.  As a tech demo it was impressive and you can see Microsoft's roots and genius as a software company.  The third biggest announcement had to be Metroid Other M and the fact that Team Ninja is working with Nintendo on it.  Quite the interesting collaboration between the family friendly Nintendo and the over-the-top blood and guys Team Ninja.

The Best conferences in order

I got some slack last year for my Sony support but I own all the damn consoles now so hopefully that helps the non-bias cause.

Sony - Games games and more games.  Sony had a ton of titles to show off and plenty of "true" exclusives.  I really think the only complaint we can have of Sony this is a lack of a price cut and existing owners really don't care about that.  From God of War 3, Heavy Rain, Uncharted 2, MAG, The Last Guardian, Final Fantasy 14, Rockstar's Agent, and Mod Nation Racers they blew Microsoft out when it came to exclusives.  The PSP Go was a solid announcement that should help bring portable gaming closer to the digital distribution front.  And to top if off their motion controls seemed practical and worthwhile.

Microsoft - While Microsoft brought out what they like to call "exclusives", the fact is many of them are on PC as well (Mass Effect 2, Alan Wake, Left 4 Dead 2, Splinter Cell) and I will play them there.  Metal Gear Rising was announced but we know that will be on the PS3 as well.  The only "true" exclusive that is seemed like a must buy for me on 360 as I don't play Halo was Forza 3.  Natal is very impressive however and some day down the road it could really be doing big things.  Is Reach and ODST enough to satisfy the Halo fanboys?

Nintendo
- Nintendo didn't fail nearly as hard this year as last year.  Thankfully.  It was looking a bit bleak after the Super Mario Brothers Wii announcement (which my folks on the show floor say is amazing) but Mario Galaxy 2 and Metroid Other M where great saving graces.  They focus so much on the DS (I don't blame them, number selling system in the world) and I just kind of zone out when it comes to that.  The above three games sound like must buys however and I couldn't find one must buy in last year's show.

Yes, Sony again this year.  Overall these are probably A-, B+, and B- if I had to rank them grade wise in that order.  I felt Sony came with better games overall and more of them.  The motion controls are an interesting battle so lets discuss that a bit more.

The Battle of the motion controls

This deserves its own sub-section as everyone was on the motion controlled bandwagon this year.  Nintendo continued to hype Motion Plus which last year looked cool and now this year it looks mediocre at best compared to Microsoft's Natal and Sony's demonstration.  Natal was far and away the most impressive technologically of the three, I won't argue that.  Sony's however seemed to have the most practical in-game uses and seemed like it could actually make it in to some key games and not just be an afterthought.  From sword play to FPS action the Sony wand-like thingy seemed like something I would use.  Honestly as cool as Natal looks I don't want to stand around flailing my arms with nothing in them just to be "realistic".  Natal may offer the most depth and options with their motion based camera but Sony seems to have won the "usability" department.

Best Gameplay Video

God of War III has moved up from best teaser to best gameplay of this year's show.  We have wanted to see this in action other than the few glimpses of cinema trailers and SCE Santa Monica delivered.  Note that there is more gameplay footage other than this sole video and you can view more here.  March is going to be an awesome birthday when this bad boy lands.

Best Video w/o Gameplay

I was torn on this one.  A part of me wanted to choose Final Fantasy 14 but has gameplay even if its just cinema.  This Metal Gear Rising trailer however is all teaser and it features Raiden.  Raiden may be loathed by many but I actually like him.  I can't wait to use that incredible cyborg suit in the game.  When we all saw those previews of Metal Gear Solid 4 you can't tell me you didn't instantly want to use Raiden and wield swords with that kind of deadly precision.

The worst No Shows

This one is easy.  Half Life 2 Episode 3 oh where the hell are you?  I've *****ed in the past, I brought it up in my E3 PC preview and we still have nothing but a few images of concept art in the past few years.  I don't know what is going at Valve other than Left 4 Dead 2 but your fan base is clamoring for a return of the greatest PC franchise!

Stupidest thing seen or heard at the show

Um, what the hell is this Nintendo Wii Vitality Sensor?  A Wii add-on that helps you relax and can read your heart rate?  Stupid Nintendo... and you just know this **** will probably sell by the truckload.

And last but not least, Best Game

This wasn't an easy choice either.  I measure best game by the title I am most excited to play that was shown at E3, not necessarily the one that will sell the most or get the best rankings from the critics.  Last year it was Left 4 Dead, this year it could almost be Left 4 Dead 2.  However we are closing in on the home stretch for Final Fantasy 13 and the actual gameplay shown and new cinematic elements have me really stoked to finally play this game.  The announcement of a spring 2010 release date (about f-ing time) was icing on the cake.

That is a wrap on this year's conferences.  I'll be churning out some more E3 related news still in the next day or two as the show wraps up.

Meh.

Computers are superior to consoles in everyway. The only console I own and use sometimes is my wii to play the new zelda or marios games because they are just classics and are ment to be played on a console.

Was there any new zelda news slap?

I think that at this point PS3 is indisputably the superior system. I'll buy one as soon as they price cut again. Just on principle.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Raiden_(Metal_Gear)

You played as him is most of the later part of MGS2  In MGS 4 he is rocking an updated version of the Grey Fox cyborg ninja suit.  He is pretty much a one man army at this point wrecking a bunch of the mini metal gears at once.

How can you even be stoked on Left 4 Dead 2?  It's just the exact same game reskinned with what could be new weapons (the nail gun is not a new weapon).  Did they announce new Infected at E3?

Appreciate the write-up btw, I had no idea what went down.

I've got another piece on L4D2 in progress.

Yes there are new weapons and new infected.  New melee weapons, you can cut off limbs, there is incendiary ammo, new special infected, etc.

The charger is even shown in some footage for a few seconds, he is the first of the new specials.

Looked like a reskinned tank to me.  Guess we'll see.  If it's 10$ I'm all for it.  Do we know how melee weapons work at all?  Will they function like a regular weapon and be in addition to the right-click melee knockback?

From a preview:  "These melee weapons are carried not as a backup that can be carried
around without being used, but as a droppable item that holsters
whatever guns you're carrying (much like the propane and gas tanks
found in the original game)"

Most likely, because you look at it from some sort of future competitive aspect even though the game is barely making inroads on that front.  Ill publish my piece tomorrow, too much other **** going up today.

Replayability will always have its strength in multiplayer, which versus greatly out does campaign.

barely making inroads?  Cevo has almost 200+ teams in it and we don't even have a legit SDK.  Community members have gone above and beyond making it viable for competitive play, if we had access to the tools we needed we could really make something happen.

Look im not trying to bash competitive L4D, but don't ahead of your self.  The game pales in comparison to TF2, CS and CS1.6 in player bases both competitively and publicly.  The numbers just arent there yet.  That is barely making inroads.  The game is newer than both and if it was really going to take off to those levels it would have already.

You can't expect them to make a whole new game since the game is fine as is. All it really needs is new content on all fronts (characters, infected, weapons, maps, game modes and features) and it's good to go. And that is exactly what they're doing. So what else could you ask for?

It's exactly what they said they'd be doing for Left 4 Dead 1, only now we have to pay for it, and honestly I think from the gameplay videos the changes they are implementing is a step in the wrong direction save for 2 things.

You are full of it.  Even over at NeoGAF the poll is running neck and neck between Sony and MS and they are notoriously pro MS.

For entertainment value I'd go with MS but Sony had much more exclusives shown. It was pretty close imo.

Honestly my 360 is starting to collect dust. Any game that comes out on both 360 and PC is always purchased for and played on my PC. Just a few exclusives keep it out of the closet. I'll probably buy a ps3 after the price drops.. lots of exclusive games I want to check out.

I'm starting to get excited about SW:TOR even though 4 years of WoW has drained most of the mmo itch out of me. From the very few and hard to find articles I've gathered that it won't be a mirror image of WoW but in a different vein. Plus, the interviewers all seemed really excited about it.

PS3 is still expensive, would rather buy my granite counter top for the 2nd bathroom, would have money left over.  You can't **** on a PS3 and have it work later.

For people who don't have a PC I still think 360 has the best games, at least for me.  No Left 4 Dead on PS3, no racing games, no Dead Rising, no Halo.

Looking for that price drop.  PS3 gets to about 300.00 brand new then I'm game.  They should just come out with a 20-40 gig hard drive version to make it cheaper.  I don't even use the full space on my 20 gig drive for my 360.

The hard drive has next to zero bearing on the actual cost.  Hard drive prices are dirt cheap anywhere from 20-300GB.
