The Playstation 3 only demo (as it is a Blu-ray disc) will work here in the states for those of you that don't mind dealing with Japanese and want to import the movie. North America and Japan are of course in the same region when it comes to Blu-ray compatibility. Of course you could just wait till June in hopes that the demo comes along as well.
It is set to be about four years, the longest wait between any of the Final Fantasy games, since the loved and hated Final Fantasy 12. Anticipation for this title is extremely high and producer Yoshinori Kitase feels they may need 10 times the success of your typical game. If those are sales numbers then they really better deliver with an outstanding game.IGN has some new details on the upcoming demo in advance of the game's launch in the coming weeks thanks to an interview via Famitsu. Some interesting talking points, especially the HP thing:
- The demo features an hours worth of gameplay within the shoes of Lightning and Snow.
- It takes place on Cocoon in an area named "Hanged Edge", which isn't an indication of the world's art style.
- A new character we haven't seen yet will appear at the end of the demo in prison clothing apparently.
- Chocobos are in the game, but you can't ride them silly pervs!
- The demo only allows you to control one character though the others will react to your moves accordingly. This of course won't be in the final version.
- The Evolved ATB system won't be fully featured in the demo and summons won't be in the demo either.
- Your HP recovers after every battle (WHOA), battles are difficult and they will require thinking to win.
- Chaining combos and bonus percentages are a key in battle
- After battles you get a complete screen which shows a 1-5 rating on your performance
- 720p and 30 frames per second is the game's output. (Kind of a bit bummed here, I was hoping for 1080p)
- The game is complete, it is just a matter of tying everything together now
Thanks to IGN for the scoop and image.
I am definitely stoked to check this out. I wish I knew Japanese or could at least manage the menus as I wouldn't hesitant to try this out. I will have to live vicariously from the eventual Youtube cappers until the demo comes stateside.

dunno how they expect it to do 10x the sales of any other FF title when it's on the PS3, lol. Doubt there are enough FF fans on the xbox to carry it there either.

It isn't 10x the sales of any other FF title, he said success, and I questioned if that meant sales. Plus he referred to typical games, not FF games.
It is on the PS3 and 360 as well. The demo at this point is a PS3 exclusive.

It's really been 5 years since 12? I was thinking it was maybe 3 years

Well it will probably be four by the time it is out. Someone misstated 5 years that I read earlier and double checking it will be about four which is still a record delay for the series.

I agree. XII was utter ****. I have no expectations for Square-Enix anymore.
Matter of fact, ever since Squaresoft merged with Enix, they've made nothing but half-ass water-downed games and have yet to make a great game that Square use to pump out with anything they touched. Crisis Core is probably their only quality game since their merge.

The battle system in FFX-2 was pretty good imho but the game in general felt more like an "expansion pack" than a full FF game.

The demo will give only a sampling of the game's strategic component via the ability to stock up commands. Another area of the strategy, which won't appear in the demo, comes from your allies. During battle, you control just one character. Your allies are controlled by AI. However, they react to the moves your character makes. The strategy here comes from figuring out how to connect with your allies and better draw out their abilities. The demo will offer a basic glimpse at this, with allies going in for follow-up attacks when you send an enemy into the air. The final version will give you better control over such things. Specifically, it seems that you'll be able to switch off freely between the characters.

I pointed that out right in the blog.
The demo only allows you to control one character though the others
will react to your moves accordingly. This of course won't be in the
final version.
And how does that have any bearing on the actual game? That is just for the demo...

Only one character at a time still. I hate AI controlled characters in RPGs. Never have played an RPG with AI controlled characters that was fun.

How is that any different than any other final fantasy game? You don't
control them all at once, you still have to rotate freely between them
to input commands.

I wish that they gave the option to use Japanese with English subs in the final fantasy games. Maybe that way I could listen to a hero that isn't such a whiny *****. I really liked how I could swap everything in SF4 to Japanese instead of English. That single action made C.Viper's forward throw that much cooler.

TOTALLY agree. English dubs are soooo cheesy. Except I did like FF X's voice overs and Kingdom Hearts, but 80% of English voice-overs are really horrible.

The solution is hiring some quality voice actors, not giving people the ability to play in Japanese just because your English voiceovers are too humiliating to force down people's throats. It can be done, just look at MGS4, that game had good English voice acting.
Besides that though, a lot of people simply call Japanese voice actors in games better because they sound way more extroverted than the English cast, which might make it sound cool but doesn't automatically make the acting part better. There's this thing called overacting as well. The way Japanese voice actors do the voices of certain girls (young ones especially) is just ear-bleeding, and the bulkier characters tend to be extremely overacted as well.
