Like woah dude!  Gaming industry analysts always manage to amuse me.  If it isn't Micheal Patcher from Wedbush Morgan Securities it is some other guy who is over paid making statements with worse reliability than the weatherman.

The latest analyst "prediction" to make me laugh came today thanks Mike Hickey from Janco.  The guy predicts a PS3 price cut "in the next couple of days".  Pretty ballsy, I will give him that.  Everyone and their brother has been anticipating a $50-100 PS3 price cut for months now though Sony stated spring would be the earliest it would happen.  So not only is he bucking that trend but he is saying this week it will happen.  I predict it doesn't happen this week and I'll put $10 on me being right because bets are more fun with something on the line.

He doesn't just stop there with the price cut however, oh no.  He also offered up this little gem:

"We are also hearing continued speculation that Sony is working on a non-Blu-ray PS3 console, which could enable them to make the aforementioned hardware price reduction."

LOL?  Ya, it is called the PSP or PSP2.  How the hell is Sony going to make a PS3 game without the drive that plays 95% of the system's games.  Seriously?  Someone pays this guy to announce this kind of speculation?

What the hell would it be, a Playstation Network machine only?  That is really going to fly off of the shelves.  The best part about the PS3 for many is the value that comes with having the Blu-ray drive with the machine.  And you think they are take out that value for a price reduction and in hand allow people to play next to none of the system's games.

Fudzilla seems to think a DVD-ROM version may be in consideration but I have to think not even Sony is that stupid to segment their market like that.

I think Two-Face offers up better odds than that.

Anyhow we will be seeing a PS3 price cut at some point.  No, I don't think it will be this week but I would almost bet the farm on it happening before the summer game season kicks off.  The economy is hurting, Sony overall is hurting, it just makes sense.  While they will take a bigger loss on the systems they need to try to recoup it with software sales before things get really grim.

The lesson for today is if you are a "industry analyst" you can just throw **** on the wall and hope at least one turd sticks and get paid!  Thanks for reading.

*edit*  It is now a week later.  How about that price cut Hickey?

DVD with DLC install for overspill over the capacity of the DVD?  That would be a fine solution for a lot of people who are willing to DL content in order to save $$ on the initial system price.

PS I have had my PS3 since Christmas, have 10 games and am bored of them - I have LBP, Resistance 2, Top Spin 3, Tiger Woods, Drake's Fortune, Bourne, Quantum of Solace, and more.  What should I get that will be fun for a few days at least?

Killzone 2 is out tomorrow, Resistance 2 is solid if you can handle console shooters.

Depends on what kind of use you get out of fighters i guess.  Single player has a lot to offer with training modes, arcade, survival and time attack.  And you can beat up or get beaten down constantly online.

I think KZ2's multiplayer is going to be pretty fantastic from what I played of it, and what all the reviews have stated.

RE5 probably will have the best story, plus co-op, but not much in the form of multiplayer.

Actually, most of the games fit in a normal DVD Disc. Let's recap, maybe a 80% of the games in the marke are multiconsole, so they should not be developed in a "Blue Ray only standard". The ones that are Sony exclusive, barely fill the storage capacity of a blue ray (except when you play a ****ty "game" that is just a full length movie like Metal gear, geez). But the catch of Sony's game is luring people to buy the PS3 just for the fact that you have a complete entertainment center ( video games console with online gamimg and a blue ray player).

Still, those guys know a damn thing about the gaming business.

don't know how it works out today, but the ps3 has been considered the best blu-ray player for a long time. that's the main reason i chose a ps3 over a 360 (technical issues with the 360 were another, see the common joke "why it's called a 360? because the console goes from microsoft to the customer and back to microsoft")

so, a top-notch player with a praised firmware and a video games console for $400 is hardly expensive.

i hope sony continues to put value over lowest price, but that's just me. as slapnuts said, a ps3 without blu-ray player wouldn't work out, unless they offer it as an optional usb-device while selling more games on psn.

I actually love video games, i'm not a fanboy of X or Y console (I own them all, except an Arcadia 2000, damn). But yes you are ring in the point that the PS3 was considered the best blue-ray, but with the recent price drops I, you can go to walmart/ best buy a buy a sony nice blue ray player for less than 200 bucks (I've seen them for 150). 1 or 2 years ago the PS3 combo was great, nowdays?...I don't think so.

The 360 joke, hah, yeah is funny, but that is something that happened before to Sony, seems that nobody remembers that now, when all those PS1 consoles were a really poor hardware, I know of friends (back in the day) that had to buy 4 PS1's because they just died while playing a game etc... I even remember when people had to flip it upside down to play their games. Sony sold a 655378689202979829.8675434672867 zillion of PS1's, but hey, 1/2 of them were in the trash can a few months after they were buyed. I guess same thing is going on with the X360.

I'll just stick with my Saturn (with my 4 in 1 mega converter pack), Genesis, Dreamcast and PC. That's where I spend most of my time, besides the usual "off the hook" game that comes out in the new consoles every now and then.

I supposed the DVD would be possible but that still leaves plenty of games that won't fit.  And going down that road, offering more SKUs, confusing customers is only going to lead to a bigger mess.

There is plenty of value in the PS3, the problem is in these economic times few are looking for value, they want cheap.  =/

LOL...damn, my typos...ya know, I'm at work, lol.

Actually the 3 consoles that are in the market are very good and very marketable...but you are right, at the end it comes to $$$.

Not only did the high price of Sony's PS3 hurt them so did the lack of quality games when it came out.  When PS3 came out finding a good game for the system was like trying to find a hot young blonde at the VFW hall during bingo night.
