The saddening saga of Midway Games may finally take a turn for the better after a few more bumps in the road.  Developers of classics such as NBA Jam and Mortal Kombat, Midway has definitely seen some better days of late to the point where they recently had to file bankruptcy.

The good news is their partners in crime with MK vs. DC Universe have stepped in to acquire most of the assets including the Mortal Kombat franchise.  Warner Brothers bid of $33 million was the only bid for all of the Midway properties and it was recently accepted by the bankruptcy court.  Kind of sad to see that no one else wanted to swoop in and snatch up MK even after the solid, but not perfect, MK vs. DC.

The bad news is a few of Midway's studios won't be heading over to WB.  Midway Newcastle (Wheelman) and Midway San Diego (TNA Wrestling) haven't been picked up and they have two months of hoping someone snatches them up or they have to close down.  This is a bit surprising on the San Diego front as the TNA game sold quite well and a second edition of the series is well in to development.

Hopefully these owners won't tinker too much with a good thing.  Recently Ed Boon announced that Mortal Kombat would return to its roots and embrace a M rating.  WB, who owns the DC properties, hopefully doesn't come knocking for a sequel of MK vs. DC.  Fans of the series are ready for a return to form and that includes less heat vision and more organ removal.

It is too bad the NBA license is no longer with Midway as I would love to see some NBA rereleases over PSN or XBL.

Was never a fan of MK, or any of Midway's games to my knowledge.

NBA Jam Tournament Edition was one of the greatest games on SNES. Used to love pushing players all day long in a corner. Me and my brother used to sit there for entire quarters just shoving ***** down. Was epic fun.

Its funny you say that cuz the last NBA Jam reference I heard was my gf's bday party here a few weeks back when we shot three cups in a row and my one of my old bball teammates spectating goes, "Hes on fire!"

Spent a ton of money on various versions of that game in the arcade, though I think I only owned TE at home.

Never played NBA Jam but my buddies and I are huge fans of NBA 2k9. ****s over NBA Live 09 atm. I expect that trend to continue with 2k10.

2k is definitely the superior basketball game right.  I've enjoyed it so far this year.  The 5on5 online was badass when it works and is lag-easy.

I wouldn't mind a MK vs. DCU sequel as I'm still playing the first.
But I want a gory bloody new MK much more :)
