EA Mythic, developers of the upcoming Warhammer MMO, says World of Warcraft has made making MMOs that much easier. He notes that most MMOs that have come out since WoW have been successful.
Non New Yorkers curious as to how the real life New York city compares to GTA IV's Liberty City? Check out some of these amazing photos and see for yourself in direct comparison to in game shots. Nice work.
Make sure you check out video of Left 4 Dead if you haven't had the chance yet.
Those of you that have played GTA IV are probably familiar with Niko's cousin Roman. Well the real life voice actor is offering you the ability to "Rent Roman", he will come to your house and play GTA with you... lol...

Microsoft's Shane Kim expects the 360 to have a 7 year lifespan at least. I don't buy this, nor do I buy the PS3's 10 year lifespan. I will take bets that both of these guys put out new machines, and not just revisions, before those dates.
Shacknews has a great interview up with the producer of Battlefield: Heroes. The free game coming from EA later on this year. Highlights include the game starting off with 2 maps, but additional maps will not cost a dime. "Cosmetic and convenience items" will be purchasable. Say you want to level faster, or look different in game. They also note it will run on slow PCs. Check out the full interview.

I think the "lifespan" is how long they will make games for it, not how long before they release a new system.

Dont think so, but I could be wrong. The PS2 is already on year 8 in that regard then, and it isn't going away probably for a least a year or two as sales are still amazing.
Both in the Sony piece a while back, and now this one, they make it sound like a big deal, 7-10 years. I think it is before a new machine.

Well the 360 is almost 1/2 to 7 years already so it can make it. I don't think the new xbox will come out in the next 2 years so it can easily still have games come out for it.

Only come november will it have even hit 3 years, that isnt even half way.
Devs are already complaining about the lack of standard harddrive, and the fact that the discs are too small. They can go 4.5 more years like that?

4.5 more years? Easy, if they are pumping out the games they are now for the next 4.5 years then it will be great.
The next generation will be different though.

The first xbox lasted 4 years before a new one, the PS2 last 6 years before the PS3. 5 years between the Gamecube and Wii.
4 years between Saturn and Dreamcast. 5 years between the PS1 and PS2
History is against you, that is mainly what I am trying to say... And remember the PS3 was held back almost a year, just to hit that 6 years mark.

Will it be 7.5 year exactly? I'm sure it will be close to it, it all depends on when they start really working on the next xbox.
Now, 10 years for the PS3 is complete bull**** and I agree with that, but console life could easily be getting longer. Considering most of the money made is off games anyway.

I just dont think the 360 is future proofed enough. Sure it is a solid system, good games, but like I mentioned about the hard drive is a real problem. They should have never made any systems without one.
This business is booming right now, I dont see them sitting idle making games for 4.5 years, and just designing a new console for release after that time frame. Too much money to be made.

I think the 360 is fine for the next 4 years because the people that want a hardrive will have them. IN the Spring update you will be able to utalize the hard drive if you have one.
And the money is in the games and with an attach rate that has never been seen before why not milk it. It costs a lot of money to make a new console with a new user base.
Microsoft could easily milk more time out of this console.

I wasn't really suggesting the hard drive being a problem on the user end, it is more on the developer side. Numerous devs have already stated, including Rockstar, that not have a HDD on the 360, or not being able to count on one in ALL 360s makes it quite a hassle.
Devs want to be able to count on using that, for cache purposes, cut down on game loads, you name it. But they cant do that on a 360.

Of corse the tech is going to have to get better with the next generation, but to have games such as Mass Effect, GTA4, Assassins Creed running off of a DVD, the 360 is fine for the next couple of years.
There is no doubt there will need to be a huge leap forward and personally I hope it will be digital Distrobution for this coming up generation, but with what we have it can easily go on for 4 years.

You too are missing the point. They CANT develop a game requiring the hard drive, even if people can add one, because there will always be potential buyers who DONT have one.
Get what I am saying now?

How do people save their games then? Memory sticks? Sticks don't come with the system either.

Battlefield Heroes looks like it could be good, reading the interview if they end up fully implementing the game the way they have it planned it should be a fairly casual yet enjoyable FPS.

Any chance the next systems will kick the PC to the curb?
Slapnuts May 14, 2008 at 10:33 pm

For maybe a month or two. If that. The PC is always going to be faster because the hardware refreshes at a much faster rate. These consoles use graphics chips that may be faster than PC graphics chips while in development, but usually by the time of launch they are or soon will be out dated. And that doesnt even account for the memory, or CPU.

Unless the PC games go down the way of the dinosaurs. Un-likely, but these consoles are getting to be more kick ass each generation.

I am sure your reference had nothing to do with graphics, and was just how "kick ass" the system paint jobs are.
