I miss regularly writing about hardware besides one of the side jobs I have so you guys can either enjoy this or suffer through it.   :)   I mentioned last week that I was working on a new upgrade for my "command center" as Wadsworth1 likes to call it.  All my components are now here though I do need an extra one to complete the setup but more on that later.

Those of you in the know may question why I went socket 1366 (Bloomfield) when socket 1156 (Lynnfield) just came out today and is arguably the best deal in CPUs right now (or even the 920).  I could have gone Lynnfield and an i7 870 as well though I choose the i7 950 instead.  They both would have been free so it was a wash in that regard.  The main reason came down to my desire to consider Gulftown, the 6-core CPU, which should be out next year.  Gulftown will work on my my motherboard and would not work on a Lynnfield board.  Plus this setup is a much better option for multiple GPUs if I consider that route with the ATI 5xxx series.

Right now this is my setup as it stands.  Those the optical drives up top have been removed.

Intel i7 950
EVGA x58 LE Motherboard
Sapphire 4850x2 2GB (will be swapping this for the upcoming 5870x2)
6GB 1600MHz Corsair Dominator
300GB Velociraptor (selling this and picking up a Intel X25-M 160GB SSD for Windows 7)
2.3TB storage space
Cogage TRUE Spirit cooler with Sycthe S-Flex Fan
4 Yate Loon d12sl 120mm fans
Antec P182
X-Fi Xtrememusic
Corsair 750TX
Benq 24" G2400W
MS Natural Multimedia Keyboard
Audio-Technica AD700s
Logitech G9 Mouse with ID Grip
Razer Sphex

I have been debating about changing my case for ages now as I have had this P182 since it came out as it was a review model.  Unfortunately there is pretty much no case that is acoustically this quiet, large, and has a solid layout right out of the box.

I did make one small mistake on this latest build.  I didn't realize that this board didn't have an IDE channel so I have two worthless CD/DVD burners here.  Now I have to go out and buy a SATA optical drive, probably the Sony Optiarc.  At least it gives me an excuse to finally get one with a black bezel to match my case.

Besides for the Solid State Drive and a new video card I probably won't upgrade for quite some time, most likely later next year when Gultown becomes reasonable.  The hard drive is currently my weakest link as you can see in the Windows performance index so I am itching for a SSD.  I've thought about a another 24" monitor to go with my current one and my HDTV.  Now that ATI will support three monitors out of the box on their new cards I may get around to that.

I sold my old stuff for like $50 less than what I paid for the new stuff after rebates and Bing Cashback and the cheap CPU so this was a really cheap upgrade.  I'll get around to overclocking eventually though it isn't a major concern on day one.

If you want to check out pics of my complete "entertainment" setup you can check those out here and here.

As usual when I talk hardware feel free to ask any questions on mine or your future builds and I'll try help out.  Or you can always hit up the Tech help thread in the forums.

Also you think if it's a good deal to instead pick up a Lynnfield if you were planning going for a Nehalem? Or just stick with the tried and true?

If you aren't insistent on socket 1366 for a future upgrade, I so no reason to pass on lynnfield.  Most of the reviews are unanimous, the 870 and the series as a whole is an incredible buy for the price.

I thought about a black stand but I got a really great deal on that.  Plus it matches more of furniture around the room.

I made this exact mistake with this exact same motherboard about, oh, 1 month ago.
and many lols were had at my expense.

Also, rofl, i bought the exact same drive to remedy the situation

Now that is pretty funny.  I guess it didn't even dawn me to check but I knew my last board only had one channel and that slowly but surely they were being phased out.  I was just in such a hurry to snatch this up that I didn't even think to check.

I hang around CDfreaks.com for all my optical drive/media info and the Optiarc is one of the more loved driver over there that does everything I need.

Could care less about the new CPU upgrades to be quite honest. In computer years, my Q6600 is ancient. But because how quads work with games and how OC'able my board is(@3.6ghz on air), any upgrade I could possibly do would be extremely minimal at gaming resolutions(1920x1200 for me). And it scores 28000 in CPU score on 3dmark Vantage with the worlds fastest score to date being 32xxx, so meh.

I am however eagerly awaiting the DX11 cards. Going to be huge. Maybe next year for a new board+CPU.

video card is line 3.  And SLI 295s are wayyy overpriced and overkill, but I am sure you are enjoying them.  :)

I"m a huge fan of Coolermaster cases if you're looking for a new one.

Currently use this one:  http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811119137
Only downside is the location of the power buttons.  Otherwise a solid case.  Cable management is really good.
I've used a 590 for a build about a year ago, which is similar.

I don't mind coolermaster but the main issue is silence.  Besides for the above-average loud vid card, my setup is super quite thanks to the sound dampening panels and the work done by Antec and SilentPCReview (who helped develop the case) on the P18x series.  I just have a hard time giving that up.

I really like Lian Li, particularly the V2110B, but that is just too far out of my price range when I have perfectly awesome case.

I guess I don't mind the sound since I use headphones 100% of the time.  My case has 7-8 Thermaltake 120s in it, including the 2 on the cpu, so it sounds like a vacuum cleaner. =P

Have you ever thought about putting together one of those Atom CPU+MB combos they sell for like 100 bucks to have a computer strictly for torrents/music/browsing?  A friend of mine has one of those living in a desk drawer, running 24/7 pretty much.  You don't really need a case even, just a tiny bit of airflow.

It has crossed my mind but after picking up my first non-work laptop this year I'll probably just do with that for now.

My 26 inch Samsung is as big as I can handle for games.  Otherwise I end up having to move my head to see parts of the screen in games.  I'm very inflexible about the distance I sit from the screen too, so I can see how 24 inches can be the biggest screen someone could handle depending on how far they sat from it.

I would really like another one mainly to separate work content from play content.  And so I don't always have to use my TV when I am watching media and working at the same time.

Once you go dual screens, you NEVER go back.
Here's a pic of my setup with a really messy desk.

Well I run my TV that way, as a second desktop, but it obviously isn't always on that input.  It is a bit out of peripheral view when I am at the desk but I can drag a episode of True Blood and slide to the side a bit and watch content on the TV and do work at the same time.  But if no one else is here it wouldn't hurt to have that third screen right on my desktop.

My main is a 28" and my secondary is a 19". I usually have the secondary off though, except when I'm gaming and I'll run my xbox off of the main and run my PC off the seocndary. Or if I'm just playing a PC game or something, put all my **** on the second and just run the game on the main.

But yeah, once you go dual, you never go back.

/drool

I remember when I upgraded my PC regularly, all of this makes me jealous.  But since all I play now is WoW and it runs at 50-60 fps anywhere, I'm cool with my MB Pro.

Down vote for posting a screen shot of an i7 at stock speed! Blasphemy! Nice system, although I would sell the 950, grab a 920 D0 off ebay, OC to 4GHz and pocket the extra $300. :P
