This is the only Wii game I have been excited for since Mario Kart.  Pretty long drought eh?  I haven't bought a Wii game since Mario Kart and I haven't played the Wii since last fall when I beat RE4.  =/

Nintendo announced that Punch-Out!! for the Wii will be out May 18th.  I know right now it isn't going to live up to Mike Tyson's Punch-Out.  I put that game on my top five sports games of all time.  But if it at least channels the spirit of the old game I would be happy.  At least they kept the music, which you can hear in the trailer below, that is a good start to appeasing old fans.

There will of course be no Mike Tyson though we may get the return of Mr. Dream?  He could have retired however as Little Mac has got to be getting old for a boxer so certainly Dream retired by now.  :)

I have a wishlist for this game and it goes a bit like this:

1.  Don't make Wii motion controls a must.  Allow the GC controller, Arcade and Arcade pro pads all work as well.  Not everyone wants to literally box for hours on end.  Make sure Motion Plus Controls work as well!

2.  Bring everyone back!  I am serious!  Even dumb ass Von Kaiser.  Hell toss in some characters from Super Punch Out as well and bring us new guys as well.  90% of the fun in Punch-Out!! came from the unique character roster.  Finding out ways to attack them, their different styles of fight, their animations and their trash talk.  More = better.

3.  Online play!  While I don't know if they will allow the other characters to played in single player (they should), please have an online component allowing us to beat the snot out of each other with the various characters.  Bald Bull vs. Piston Honda, Glass Joe vs. Don Flamenco, make it happen Nintendo!

4.  I never played Super Punch Out so I don't know if it had a save mode or not.  Nintendo should offer a "classic mode" if they are going to allow a save system in the main part of the game.  Two or three losses and you are done just like back in the day.

I am a bit excited for this so hopefully Nintendo doesn't screw it up.  Check the trailer below and as always I will keep you posted.

you can probably expect none of those as nintendo ****** its smash bros franchise with a singleplayer mode no one gave a **** about and an online mode that was developed with a dog turd in mind

I don't expect it to be perfect but I hope the hardcore fans ire of late over their shoddy releases motivates them at least a little bit.  Unfortunately they are selling so well to the casuals that may not even give a ****.

Which was the first year in what, years? maybe decades?

I don't mind their lack of a title because when they do come out, they're stellar.  that's all that matters.

ER- that's in response to you slaps

5 years with no mario between sunshine and galaxy  '02-'07

3 years between twighlight princess and windwaker  '03-'06

so not quite.  I do agree they are stellar when they come out and well worth it.  Mario and Zelda only carry you so far.

And it does not help the fact that the Zelda came out in GC too.

As long as they keep the strategies deep like the past two Punchout games it will be a sure hit.

Super Punchout did have a Save feature and was extremely deep. Trying to figure out he fastest ways to down boxers required such good timing. Even without that you could 'box' more than you could in the NES version (NES you could only open up after dodging, not entirely the case with SPO). I highly recommend grabbing a Emulator and the rom of SPO just to play it as it is a timeless classic.

Eh the 2-3 losses and a game over screen with no continues just doesn't fly these days, and chances are it'll never be in - if Nintendo supposedly didn't want rankings in smash because "it would hurt people's feelings", then chances are this is going to have infinite continues. I'm going to play semantics and say, if you really want it that bad, you could always just restart the game if you lose 3 times:D

**** yes.  One of my favorite games of all time.  I agree with everything you said in the blog... really hoping they don't make it so you have to punch with the wii remote.  I was a boxer for 6 years and holy **** there is nothing more frustrating than playing a wii boxing game where none of the punches correspond to the way you actually throw them.  Even if they could get it exactly right, not everyone wants to box while they're gaming.

In related Onion news, you should get a kick out of this:

great stuff.

Boxing may not be too bad if the Wii Motion Plus adapter is out by then but it has seemingly been delayed along with Wii Resort from Spring till later in the year.  I hope they have programmed this game for use with it in advance however.

Motion Plus gives real time, 3D positioning.  Could be sweet with this game if done right.
