For the third week in a row "Slapnuts' Top Five" is back, this time with new art! This week we are going to cover some console nostalgia. Controller preference varies for pretty much everyone so I realize the odds of this agreeing with all of you is highly unlikely.
Today's topic is the best console controllers of all time. These aren't 3rd party controllers like the awesome Madcatz SF4 TE Arcade Stick. These are 1st party controllers that actually shipped with a system at some point or another. This list isn't based on innovation either. Thus there is no Wii Remote nor is there any nostalgia like the Atari joystick. Plus, just because something is digital or has analog sticks does not give it an advantage. This is awesomeness in its own time period. I am measuring in comfort, button placement, usability and overall feel. I saw a list over CNet a while back which I thought was a complete joke. That is part of this weeks inspiration along with this "console family tree" which I came across this week and nabbed a couple images from (thanks). On with the list!
5. Dreamcast Definitely an awesome controller and one which was ahead of its time. From the display and the Virtual Memory Units to the triggers down below the controller packed on some goodies. At first glances it looks horribly awkward but in reality it sported a solid comfort level. A cross between the N64 and 3DO controller was a great way to go on Sega's part and it would ultimately be one of the inspirations for the #4 on the list.
4. Xbox 360I read that one of the designers from the Dreamcast platform also worked on the Xbox 360 which is partially the reason why the controllers looks so similar (If you have a source, help out). Look at the first Xbox controller and you can really see the evolution from #5 to #4. Nothing wrong with a bit of blatant inspiration via something that worked great and the 360 controller features that in spades. They added some shoulder buttons to go along with the triggers and another analog stick. My only big gripe is the abysmal dpad on this controller which should have borrowed from #1 on the list. The concave analog sticks are superior in comfort and something I want to add to my DS3.
3. Dualshock 3Sixaxis controls and the return of rumble, this controller is nearly perfect. While the Dualshock 2 probably could have made this list the added heft of the DS3, the ditching of the "analog switch" and PS3 home button make this the superior choice. Wads complains about this being too small which is funny because he hears that a lot. I also prefer the 360's concave triggers but that was easily remedied with a pair of these of these Gioteck Real Triggers. The dpad, while superior to the 360 controller, could use a bit of work and if this were a bit wider as well I would have zero complaints.
2. SNESThe Super Nintendo was a fantastic system and thanks much in part to the awesome layout and upgrades in comparison to the NES controller. The left side of the controller remained unchanged besides for the addition of shoulder buttons on both sides, a first for any controller. The awesome Nintendo dpad returned and besides for #1 few compare. The added buttons on the right feature something I wish controllers would do to this day. They separated them via concave and convex so you could always "feel" where you were at. I still get annoyed at having to look at colors and letters vs. feeling the buttons on modern controllers. These also felt a bit flimsy but that is a minor complaint.

1. The Mouse and Keyboard
Yes, most of us know its true and the rest of you are in denial. However this is a console only list so I can't really include it. With that being said here is the real number one...
1. Saturn Model 2The ultimate video game controller for its time and it still holds up well now. This controller is so good that Madcatz pretty much copied its design with their Street Fighter Pads for the release of Street Fighter 4. Many regard this as the greatest fighting pad of all time and I feel it is the best all-around. The only complaint regarding this controller was the slight added reach for the shoulder buttons compared to the SNES controller. It does however feature the greatest dpad in controller history. The 6 button design was ideal for most fighters and also gave plenty of options for every other game. I also love the added depth of the controller at the palms. This is has pretty much become a standard in all modern controllers as it has evolved in to handles.
As a reminder, obviously the DS3 and 360 controllers are superior on a innovation level but isn't what this list was about. Arguments, complaints or suggestions; feel free to comment. Post your own lists if you feel mine is a complete P.O.S.

The Saturn as a console never really took off besides for arcade imports and it was quickly outshone via the Playstation 1. The controller however was awesome. People still use it with various adapters.
It looks like work because you don't game on a PC and prefer to use crappy alternatives for controls.

Ha, I remember the Saturn back in the day. Oh man I remember going to Toys R Us down the street playing the original Gameboys, SNES, Genesis, and Saturn.

My list would probably be 1:Mouse/Keyboard, 2:GC controller, 3:Same, 4: SNES, and probably Dualshock 2 for 5th.
I hate Xbox controllers so much

Great mouse but it has the wrong grip on it. the precision grip is better, also natural keyboards suck :P
I'm also not a fan of sony controller's, I have pretty big hands and and i have to warp my fingers causing them to cramp up with any extend play.

Negative on the precision grip. The new ID Grip http://www.logitech.com/index.cfm/636/4818&cl=us,en is superior imho as it makes the mouse feel more like a G5/518. I've used and tested them all and this is my favorite.
When you do as much typing as I do, natural keyboards are like a must. Must easier on the wrists. I even use the front end riser on this one which really helps.

I used to hate on the natural until I got used to it and now everything else is just wrong.
My G9 should be here next week moving up from the G5 mutha****in one button. Now all I need to do is settle on a mouse pad, I am using an icemat now but I still don't know how I feel about the glass. I have had a couple of ratzpad but I always feel like they wear out and get real slow.
I still love the genesis controller a lot of good times, except Evander Holyfield boxing then that controller got swung by the cord into the ground. **** you Evander!!!

1. dualshock- when you get bored of the game you can press the analog
button to turn the light on and off, there's a minigame or some **** in the controller
2. 360- wireless, efficient, triggers AND bumpers? how long is it going to take those sony ******* to figure out that triggers are much more badass when they go all the way down? increases the skill level too, not to mention button sensitivity at it's finest, play tiger woods on the dual shock and get raped when you spin the ball halfway across the green
3. n64- two places for your left hand, if humans evolve to have three arms, this thing was ready first,. bottom centered joystick C-Buttons + Z BUTTON? don't even get me started on how badass this mother****** was for holding it with your left hand and using your palm to rotate the joystick in mario party so you could power that light from the electricity bike, and these *****es had multiple colors and optional transparency so when you went somewhere else and they had a totally different controller setup you had to use the other colors like they were different or some ****. awesome.
4. wavebird- first and only except for the 360 controllers wireless controller i used that actually functioned properly, when i used this thing for the first time i was flipping a ******* ****, somebody made a wireless controller for less than two years of your
salary that not only worked but didn't come with the rapid fire any button bull**** that never worked so if you ended up using it you got raped by somebody else doing it manually
5. saturn- bias based on the sega saturn being my first console, still, ******* clicking bumpers, get raped.
also, les paul for guitar hero, no contest

Try those Gioteck Real Triggers for the Dual Shock. $5 is ok but the shipping is probably a bit much: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B001AW156U/ref=asc_df_B001AW156U836542
I don't let anyone use my DS3 vs. me now as I love those triggers.
The N64 controller was a bit weird. Seems like they just tossed a bunch of **** together to see what would stick. Ergonomically it was horrible. The middle handle was about as pointless as tits on a bull.

damn, addons for console controllers
why can't they just figure out that shooters with a dual shock won't have the same feel without a trigger and up the price $5 on the dualshock

+1 for N64! My fav controller of all time. Everything else is just boring. Mario Party used to rape my palms until I got pro and figured out you could use the ball of your hand to rotate and not get blisters!

N64 was good except how the plastic ball at the end of the stick inside the controller got grinded down after awhile emitting fine plastic dust. You could move the stick about half a cm before it would register stick movement and it would be all slutty.

I don't really quite understand what the list aims at. If you're talking for the best user input devices for playing games at the present, the xbox360 controller and the mouse and keyboard are far away the best means of ever playing video games.
If you mean what were the most influential input devices throughout time, of course your list makes more sense, but is still a bit off with not including the original nes controller for being so god awful it gave all the designers an idea of what to avoid at all costs.
In any case, if I had to list the top 5 controllers for me:
1 - mouse and keyboard
1 - xbox 360
3 - Gamecube
4 - Dreamcast
5 - Saturn 3D controller (I'm a fan of NiGHTS)

I thought I clarified that:
Plus, just because something is digital or has analog sticks does not
give it an advantage. This is awesomeness in its own time period.
As a reminder, obviously the DS3 and 360 controllers are superior on a innovation level but isn't what this list was about
Anyone with half a brain knows the M/K is superior but this was a console list
and that was more or less tossed in as a joke even though it is my favorite. But yes, your second concept is closer to what I was adhering to.

3D blast was pretty funky, but it was the first step in the direction sonic should have never taken.

I've gotten the **** out. Left the keyboard at work where it belongs.

I'm quite fond of the GameCube controller but that's probably just nostalgia. The shoulder buttons just feel very smooth and comfortable, and it had just the right amount of buttons.
But yeah there is no beating a keyboard/mouse for gaming. Oddly enough my most comfortable keyboard for playing games was the default one on my Alienware laptop. It broke so I had to buy a G15, which isn't bad especially since I change winamp songs without alt-tabbing.

i like the gamecube controller the most. even the c stick which would be pointless in most situations was usable and oftenly used w/ the gamecube. i definitely liked the shoulder buttons though.
smash bros
i was playing SSX the other day on a PS2 wishing I had the gamecube controller.

Yeah, I still use an old Tangent (lol) keyboard I 'borrowed' from the local university years and years ago. I had a saitek eclipse that I liked for a while before it got broken in a freak dog+cord accident, and I've never bothered to replace it. Funny how the cheapest keyboards can still feel the best.

whats this about winamp? lots of keyboards have media keys, just enable the functionality in winamp prefs. you can also set global hotkeys for just about anything in winamp.
