I have been reading comics off and on since I was in the 6th grade courtesy of a G.I. Joe issue. I am 29 now, so I will let you do the math. The comic medium has become the new "it" thing in Hollywood, owing much to the success of movies like Blade, X-men and Spider-Man. Now every comic with a decent storyline seems to have a bull's eye on it. What follows is a quick summary of each of these story lines and what would allow them to transfer to the movie medium and still be a success.
5. The Walking DeadYears before George Romero did the "Land of the Dead" movie, Robert Kirkman was writing about the pursuit of life in the post zombie outbreak world. The Walking Dead is a fantastic series set in the south after zombies have over taken much of the US (we presume). It starts off with a police officer trying to find his family after being separated before the outbreak, and leads to all sorts of craziness as he and others attempt to survive with no military, or government support.
My only potential gripe with this as movie is the fact that others have tried, (see 28 days/weeks later, Land of the Dead, Resident Evil Extinction), to cover similar ground but no one has done it with Kirkman's style and flair. The comic revolve around family and friends and the intricate question of what morality exists in such a world, if any. Plus, there is a **** ton of zombie killing, smashing, and even people killing people to appeal to the common folk.
4. Y The Last ManY The Last Man is an incredible story of the survival of one solitary man in a world where only women survived. Some sort of genetic plague wipes everything with a Y chromosome, even male animals. Only one man and his monkey survive. Try living as the only man on Earth, with plenty of ape **** crazy women around the world seeking men for all sorts of reasons. His adventure to find the cause and solution, and his long lost love are highlights of the comic.
This apparently is in the works as a movie, possibly a 3 part movie, with part one as the first 14 issues or so of the comic. Shia LaBeouf is rumored to play the lead Yorick. There is load of stories and content yearning for a movie translation. Everything from crazy Amazonian woman, government agents, rouge factions hunting for Yorick and his monkey, it gets intense. Hopefully these movies come through and deliver.
3. The Death of SupermanEnter Doomsday; the only man to have ever truly beaten Superman. The Death of Superman storyline was one hell of a ride. Imagine someone just as powerful, just as fast and strong as Superman yet with no moral code or feelings. Bred to be the ultimate weapon, Doomsday was just that. You can set up the first half of the film leading to the death, and follow that with some sort of "returns" storyline as well in the same movie.
Everyone and their brother, including Kevin Smith, have taken a shot at writing this script. The problem being that Warner Brothers never seems to settle on one story and instead went with a relaunch via Super Man Returns. Doomsday hasn't had much consideration as the movie villain in past scripts but the right CGI and author could pull it off. Hopefully something like this is considered once these Superman movies start kicking again.
2. The AuthorityA no holds barred superhero team featuring a roster that would rival the best of the Avengers and the Justice League. The Authority kicks ass and takes names later. The comic is known for a high level of violence, graphic situations, and battles of an epic scale. There is no "never take lives" Batman code here. These guys do what they must and whatever the hell they feel like. From fighting off intergalactic invaders, to taking on tyrannical US and world governments, there isn't much these guys haven't dealt with.
The main issue with moving this to the movies is probably cost. They fly around in from place to place, even dimensions in this futuristic Carrier. The battle scenes alone could rival anything from Lord of the Rings or 300 as far as scope, death and destruction, and there are only 8 members on the team. If you want action, this comic and movie would have it spades.
1. The Dark Knight ReturnsFrank Miller, author of greats such as 300, Sin City, Daredevil is probably most famous for his Batman mini-series titled "The Dark Knight Returns". A story of an aging retired Bruce Wayne sick and fed up with the moral and social decline of Gotham City, coming out of retirement to put some boot to *****. Highlights include a fight with a mutant gang leader, the Joker, and of course the big red and blue himself gets in his way leading to Batman and Superman going toe to toe. The ending is perfect.
This movie was rumored to happen before "Batman Begins", but they decided to go in another direction instead which makes a bit more sense. This is obviously a movie that should take place near the end of Batman sequels considering the time frame. The fight scenes would be incredible to see on the big screen. A struggling and aged Batman isn't something we have seen before and it gives a real human feel to the story's run. This is a must have movie, someday.
I hope you enjoyed the list, and if any of these interest you be sure to hit up your local comic shop. Or if that is too geeky, plenty of good bookstores now carry trade paper backs of these in multi-issue collections.
Do you guys have any other ideas for comics that should be movies? Let me hear them.

Isn't Death of Superman just a (not sure if this is the correct term) saga of Superman? I never read any DC comics so I am not sure.
If that is the case, then shouldn't you have Carnage (Spiderman) and Apocalypse (XMen) on this list as well?

Not sure what you are trying to say. The Death of Superman is a storyline that ran within the Superman stories, in the main books' continuity.
And that storyline is much more entertaining than the carnage or apocalypse story lines. Though I would love to see Apocalypse in an X-men movie.

Age of Apocolypse is awesome! impossible to do as a movie though.

Anything is possible, though it would probably be way too crammed to get the full series' effect. I loved AoA, have read the whole thing many times, and would gladly support a "good" movie adaption.

George Romero was making zombie movies way before land of the dead and before this comic. I would hope most zombie fans already know that but the article didn't make it clear.
That Y The Last Man sounds like Children of Men although the comic probably has a little more room for multiple movies.

Years before George Romero did the "Land of the Dead" movie
I thought that was somewhat clear. According to canon, theorehtically Night, Day, and Dawn all happen within a short time of each other. While Land is more of a while down the road, lets see what happens type of thing. And Walking Dead is more in that mold. That is what I was trying to say.
Day is the only one that takes place not on the "day of the outbreak", but after. And that is set down in a military bunker, not really on the outside world like land, and Kirkmans comic.
I remember watching Children of Men and thinking it was similar. Then finding out the book came out a few years before the comic started. It has some similarities, though the causes and results are different. Girls could still be born in theory in Y. And the whole one man thing really adds some intrigue.

what is the storyline to the death of superman? the wiki you linked just said they fought, then fought some more and killed each other. that's really boring for a movie.
i'm pretty skeptical of a superman movie doing well. his iconic boy scout image is rapidly becoming obsolete with the rising popularity of anti-heroes. supposedly his comics and books add depth to his character, but probably 95% of the population (including me) knows nothing about that.

Basically the story opens with a intro, happenings in metropolis, etc. Apparently doomsday was buried here on the earth, shot from krypton come to find out later. He awakens, trounces through the justice league, the JSA, and other DCU randoms, finally getting to Superman. The fight and death would happen in the first half of the movie. Then you focus on if/when is he coming back, where did doomsday come from, blah blah. You change the Return storyline a bit as it wasn't that great. Maybe have Brainiac be the creator of Doomsday or something, then another battle with Brainiac.
It wasn't just fighting, there was more to it before and after.

There's the cartoon Superman: Doomsday, which isn't too bad. Better than the last movie, at least.
I'd like to see some 2000 AD movies (without Sly Stallone). Sláine could make a good movie, if they had a good viable lead (without Sly Stallone).
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sláine_(comics)
Nemesis the Warlock would make a great movie too.

How about Dan Dare (Eagle comic)? Good back story and open for sequels.

Y The Last Man would be fantastic.
Face it, comics have the best story line potential in relation to translating well to movies, but to date the worst transition to film record. Shame.

Well I wrote a piece way back on how video games were much worse off than comics and I still hold on to that. We have movie classics like X-men, Spidey 1 & 2, Iron Man, Begins and TDK, Blade, etc. Plus plenty of lesser flicks, Incredible Hulk, Wanted, X2, Spidey 3, V, which are basically all better than any game movie.
Nemesis could be a pretty badass flick.

I think it's mainly on sequels where they stall.
My definition of "the worst transition to film record" was kind of comparing crossovers of books > films (Palahniuk's Choke could be amazing) versus comics > films; in so much as, comics virtually hand the whole package to a director, but in a way this can leave it seeming watered down.
Again, maybe it's just the often average/bad sequels (3rds mostly) that've left the bad taste (eg. Blade 3 was horrible whilst Blade 2 was great).
Off topic
Movie games to consider:
ET on the Atari
At least crossovers weren't made illegal after the final copy of ET was laid to rest in that landfill.
/slur

Deadpool is going to be in the Wolverine movie if I am not mistaken, so we can't really count him. Ryan Reynolds, whom is perfect for the part, could very well be a solid lead in a solo movie if they go down that route.

Walking Dead would be epic.
Y would be awesome until the end.... I hated the last bit of the story.
I would submit:
Planet Hulk (silver surfer camio)
Kingdom Come
New Frontier (it has to be in a 60s pop art style like the book)
Powers (great story that could go to Hollywood and be butchered and still come out good)

Planet Hulk was fantastic. But I would worry, much I like did with Authority, at the cost of production. It wouldn't be cheap what so ever.
Powers was epic. Rising Stars is another one that should be up for consideration.

I am not his biggest fan, but I certainly wouldn't deny myself a quality film based on his acting.
