I love movies more than Vir loves politics, more than Ming loves trolling and more than Faction loves pizza.   I could talk movies all day like until sunrise and so today's "Weekly Top Five" is going to focus on my five favorite movies of all time.

The choices were not easy to whittle down and this list could easily be 10 or 20.   There are so many movies that resonate with me for various reasons and I left quite a few flicks off that that were more nostalgia than "critical quality";   movies like 'Dazed and Confused', 'Dogma', and 'Back to the Future'.   With that being said I stand by this list as some of the greatest movies ever and certainly tops in my favorites.   I own all these flicks on DVD or Blu-Ray and all get regular rotation, and yes, this will be spoiler free.

5.   The Usual Suspects
"Keaton always said, 'I don't believe in God, but I'm afraid of him.' Well I believe in God, and the only thing that scares me is Keyser Soze."

A masterpiece in storytelling.   One of the best movie scripts in the modern era.   This mystery, crime drama fires on all cylinders and will have you on the edge till the final moments.   At the root it is a "who done it" though in reality it is far deeper.   An all star cast rounds out one of the most notorious line ups in movie history.   This is a must see for any fan of movies.   I don't know of anyone who "knew" the ending before it happened on first viewing.

4.   The Godfather II
"Do me this favor. I won't forget it. Ask your friends in the neighborhood about me. They'll tell you I know how to return a favor."

Some people prefer the original, but I feel the second is the superior film.   Screen icons De Niro and Pacino dominate the screen with a commanding presence offer a look into two generations of the Corleone family.   We see the foundations of the family as Vito rises up from nothing here in the States and we see the changing of the guard with his son Michael in the other half of the flick.   Few movies have weaved two well crafted stories together perfectly and this is one of them.   The mob has never looked so fascinating.

3.
  LOTR: Return of the King
"This day we fight! By all that you hold dear on this good Earth, I bid you stand, Men of the West!"

Peter Jackson's adaption of J.R.R. Tolkien epic trilogy is a sight to behold and the final chapter is the greatest.   Very few novel-to-movie adaptations have been so faithful and captured the same emotion generated by the book.   Two massive battles, various other fight scenes, the journey of the ring, the touches of humor and tragedy; this movie has it all.   It set the new standard for fantasy adventure flicks that few will be able to match.

2.
  Shawshank Redemption
"Andy crawled to freedom through five hundred yards of **** smelling foulness I can't even imagine, or maybe I just don't want too. Five hundred yards..."

The first time I saw this it didn't really sink in how fantastic this movie was.   I have since seen it many times and there is no question, this is one of the greatest movies of all time.   Morgan Freeman and Tim Robbins were incredible in this movie which focused on the wrongly accused Robbins and his life and trials behind bars.   There are so many great moments from the beer, the record, the poster, the rocks, you name it.   There little to no filler in this flick, everything is strung together perfectly.

1.   The Empire Strikes Back
"There will be a substantial reward for the one who finds the Millennium Falcon. You are free to use any methods necessary, but I want them alive. No disintegrations"

Easily the best Star Wars movie of the six.   I could have probably put the original on this list just as well, but I figured I would stick with the one superior flick.   The darkness of Empire is one of my favorite aspects.   By the end of the movie you ask yourself what the hell else could go wrong.   This movie's lightsaber battle at the end is still my favorite out of all the movies and the twist at the end, which I am sure everyone knows, came as quite the surprise to my young ears.   The key to this movie was probably the fact that Lucas didn't direct it and Irvin Kershner did.

I hope you guys enjoyed this week's edition of the Top Five.   Post your favorite flicks, quotes or clips and let us hear your choices.

Wait, what? The only thing SW and ST has in common is that they're both sci-fi. Pretty much everything else is completely different.

Most top movie lists are pretty boring because people basically list the same movies almost every time. La Haine is a really good movie though, you should see it.

The Final Cut is amazing.  There is no other version imho, that was Ridley's cut, and that works for me.  I've seen the broadcast, theatrical, directors and final cut, and the final is definitely my favorite.

In no particular order:

Citizen Kane (I'm an Orson Wells Fan)
Saving Private Ryan
Casablanca
Usual Suspects

I want to say Memento as my last choice only because it was a drastic departure for traditional story telling. Although some people said that this movie gave them a headache or the way it was done was more of a gimmick than anything, i still believe it deserves credit for its innovation.

I think I need to rewatch Kane.  Will I can appreciate the cinematography and originality in the camera work, the movie just doesnt click with me.  I will admit to only watching it once, so maybe that has something to do with it.  The others on your list are incredible.

I ran out of time but I wanted to put in Forest Gump on my list as well. Maybe as a possible switch from Casablanca. The only reason why i would take out Casablanca is because i chose it for similar reasons as Citizen Kane.

My memory's shot, but I think I remember I actually enjoyed Memento quite a bit.  I need to watch that again.  As for the classics you listed, I don't know; they are great movies but they wouldn't be on my list because they aren't favorites.  I'll probably never watch them again.  Ryan is a great pick, and Forrest Gump would be too, yep.

The Matrix just made me angry.  I don't think it's as 'great' as mostly everyone seems to think, though it was pretty entertaining.  The slap-fighting got pretty monotonous.  The 'message' was ridiculously obscure, to the point where I really don't think they had any idea what they were going for after the first movie; I love all these people that fancy themselves intellectuals that try to find philosophical meaning in the Matrix movies.  'We are all here to do what we're all here to do.'  Ladies and gentlemen: Confuscious.

And what was up with the architect's monologue?  I think the quote was something along the lines of this:

"You are the eventuality of a potential anomaly, adept at
elucidating the massive ideogram of the American Political Spectrum.
You are a sesquipedalian, King of the Jews, and prodigious in the lucid
wake of the mark of karn.  The Architect giveth, the Architect taketh away.
A diminutive juvenile though you may be, an avid warrior of the anabolic
structure of a photosynthetic material known as blah blah blah..
"

My jaw dropped at how hard they were trying to convince people they weren't smart enough to 'get it.'

****.  Overall I guess I did like most of aspects of the movies, but some of it just pissed me off.  Thanks a lot, Slapnuts.

Well I was definitely referring to the first movie as a standalone flick, and not as the whole trilogy.  I agree there were some serious flaws in the laster two movies.  While they werent "House of the Dead" terrible, they did fail to live up to the first film.  I would say even more so than the first two Star Wars prequels did to the original trilogy.

I think the problem most between have between the two movies is that it just didn't meet their expectations of what they wanted to see.  I personally think the quality of the movie was there.  I didn't think overall they were as good as the first.  They basically built up this random guy to be the sole savior of a world enslaved and just took it in a completely random direction thereafter.  Basically, it failed because it did not live up to our perception of a "super hero" type film.

Personally I don't think it lived up to the first because they successively kept pulling the focus further and further away from the matrix, the thing that made this movie unique to us in the first place.  In other words, I kind of wanted to see more of the matrix and not the dull and destroyed world outside of the matrix.

Braveheart was almost certainly the worst movie to ever win an Oscar for movie of the year.  You could make a strong case for Crash and Gladiator though.  All of those movies were mediocre at best.

Some years they really shouldn't even give that award out.

Doesn't have the typical characters that are repeated over and over again in movies.

The scenes/situations the characters get themselves in are funny and original- dialogue is the same.

The interlocking of characters and story was pure genius.

Top it off with a good soundtrack and great cinematography = great movie.

Why do you guys hate jar jar binx so much? For ***** sake he's a justa  comedic character like C-3PO and he had amazing CGI. I liked that character and i don't care what anyone says. To say he ruined the movies is bull****. And once again you guys pick the crappiest of the 3 movies as the best. Star Wars Ep. 3 sucked. "But it was darker so it was better blah blah". The 1st movie was the best and 2nd one was good as well. But I still like the original movies a lot more. The new trilogy wasn't god awful though. It just wasn't as fun as the old ones. Too much politics not enough lazers.

I do agree with some of this.  It was just too much backstory that George decided to flesh out.  Had the PT (prequel trilogy) started off with Episode 2 things would have been far better off.  Instead of focusing on Anakin in the PT they decided to make it just as much about The Emperor (Lord Sidious, Palpatine) etc.

Now this does fit in with the OT, as it was just about luke as it was vader, but when it came time for the PT people werent quite expecting what they got out of it.

The prequels were all about Anakin. Too much so in my opinion. He tried to make Anakin the central and most important character of all 6 movies by focusing on him in the prequels. The whole story became an explanation of how people become evil.

On the one hand I think it's cool that Lucas showed us a realistic political depiction of the Star Wars universe. He did a very good job of it. My favorite part of Ep. 3 was how well he protrayed how a nation can become evil and reject democracy. It was very realistic. He must have studied Nazi Germany. i still didn't like the movie though.

But I also thought he did a bad job of explaining how a person can become evil. And that was supposed to be the whole point of the Star Wars movies as a whole. I never found Anakins transition to the dark side believable at all.

Here's Anakin, he's an emo Jedi pupil with mommy issues and next thing you know he's totally turned to the dark side and pledged his loyalty to the emperor just after conflictingly killing Windu or w/e his name is. It was too sudden and wasn't believable. And Lucas also didn't transition Anakin from a happy go lucky kid in Ep. 1 to angsty padawan in Ep. 2. I thought the original trilogy did a much better job handling the becoming evil scenario.

Anyway, I thought the politics and realistic setup of Lucas's universe that he showed us in the prequels was cool. But it didn't make for good overall movie making. In the original movies they only briefly mentioned the empire and the clone wars, etc. But in the new movies they showed how it all came about. It just wasn't as exciting to watch. The movies not being as good as the originals had nothing to do with jar jar or w/e else. Although I think toddler Anakin was a super annoying character.

But I agree with you that they shouldn't have gone so far back into Anakins story to when he was like 10, They should have started off with him as a late teenager. Atleast you get better acting that way.

Thus concludes my star wars nerdgasm.

One quick edit.

When Anakin killed Windu he didn't even really kill him. All he did was stop Windu from slicing the emperor in half by cutting off his hand. Then the emperor lightning bolted him out the window (lol that sounds lame). Yet Anakin just totally gave in to the dark side after that and pledged himself to the emperor as if he had just cut Windu in half himself. It was just a crappy transition in my opinion. He should have actually killed Windu himself. The entire back story for him becoming evil just sucked. He had a dream that his wife would die so he became obsessed with trying to learn how to prevent death? And the emperor said he could teach him how to prevent death? Come on, That's just dumb.

I dunno, if you take a few things into consideration I think it becomes pretty acceptable.

1.  The loss of his mother separation wise
2.  The loss of padme who he grew fond of (between ep1-2)
3.  The death of his mother
4.  History repeating itself and a possibly death (so his visions said) of Padme.

He wanted to do whatever means necessary to prevent that same cycle.  And less face it, his love for the Jedi way was never anything of some high moral code, at least from anything we get from the movies, novels, or clone wars cartoon.  It was more of a obligation, and thus it should have been clear where his loyalty would lie, his loved ones or the Jedi.  And this was the same reason he went to the dark side, more out of obligation than to any kind of loyalty.  The only way to save his wife he felt, even if he had to turn on the emperor when he learned how to save her, he didnt care.

I loved the politics as well.  The way palpatine controlled almost everything on the sly was top notch.  But as you said, it didn't make for good movies.  Reading the novel adaptions it came across much better, just didn't translate to film nearly as well.

Jake Loyd was annoying as ****, no argument here.

And when i mention the focus on palpatine, I do tie that in to the politics as almost all of the politics and decisions and results were because of his manipulation.

I felt his fall from grace was pretty expected, not even knowing the OT.  Maybe a part of that comes form being raised pretty much only by my mother, and realizing how that would absolutely crush me, as she was pretty much it for a parental unit all my life.

I don't think Lucas made that clear enough though. I never read the books or watched the cartoon. He should have done a better job in the movies itself. The concept is decent of Padme becoming a repeat of his mom but I just don't think what Lucas showed in his movies was enough to explain his transitions and his motives.

All he did was have 1 vision of padme dying, Or not even dying. Just in pain. That's it. He should have tied it into the Jedi's doing somehow. Like the Jedi sending his wife off to do something like some kind of diplomatic mission that he didn't agree with which he saw her dying from as a result. Then he'd have a reason to turn on the Jedi who never really treated him that well to begin with. I just don't like the way Lucas did it. Too disconected or w/e.

Now that I'm thinking about it I think padme should have died and this would have pushed Anakin over the edge. He'd go crazy from grief and join the dark side. Then I'd buy the whole "I'm going to learn how to prevent people from dying" line. She should have given birth to luke and leah just before she died of course. It would have destroyed him even more if he found out she died while she was pregnant. Then he never would have known he had children which would transition into the original trilogy. Damn, it's pretty sad that I'm a better writer than Lucas. And he had decades to think about it.

I think the biggest misfire with the prequels besides the wooden, uninspired acting and cheesy dialogue was the portrayal of Anakin himself.

I totally agree with you that Anakin's turn was written poorly. It could have been so much better. The way Anakin is talked about and revered(I think Obi-Wan says Darth Vader murdered Anakin Skywalker) in the first trilogy has us believe he was a man of great nobility and prestige that fell from grace with his turn to the dark side. You never see this character in the prequels. What we get is a whiney, angst filled teenager who constantly disobeys his master and trys to be a rebel. Oh and he murdered an entire village of innocents. I never cared for him. From Attack of the Clones and on he should have been similar to Obi-Wan in Phantom Menace, maybe ever more likable/respectable. This would have made his turn that much more tragic and believable (within the story).

For me, the only saving graces of the prequels are Ewan McGregor as Obi-Wan, Darth Maul, the special effects, lightsaber fights and Darth Vader's birth/assembly. Everything else can be summed up by Vader himself, "NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO".

Yeah i agree with your point with Obiwans refrence to Darth Vader killing lukes father. Implying that Anakin was once noble and good. He definitely was that way in Ep. 1 when he was very young. But skip to Ep. 2 and he's not likable. He supports facism and he's angsty all the time. The only thing I disagree with you on was his butchering of the sand people. I thought that made sense.

But all the other crap he did didn't have sufficient reasoning behind it. He should have been kicked out of the Jedi because they found out about his relationship with padme. Then you'd believe him becoming jaded and disillusioned with the jedi, but not before that. Simply being seperated from your mom isn't enough to make you the way Anakin was in Ep. 2. He was raised by Obiwan so it was almost like he had a dad or atleast older brother.

And they should have put in some scenes that made Obiwan feel guilty for the way Anakin turned out. Making him feel like a failed father or mentor. That would have added drama. Overall vad character develpment by Lucas.

Shawshank Redemption is my favorite; I watch it every time I feel down and pretend I'm Andy Dufresne fighting back against "the Man".  THEN I GO KICK A POLICEMAN'S ASS.
