Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 is the biggest launch in the history of video games. I've covered this already so we should probably get that out of the way from the start. If sales were the ultimate indication of quality we wouldn't need reviews, opinions or any of that jazz. Thankfully they aren't and we have positive-proof in that regard taking in consideration things like the Transformers movies and the Sims games. Therefore today you get to read my impressions of Modern Warfare 2 and flame or praise accordingly.
Modern Warfare 2 is built on three gameplay modes: Spec Ops, Campaign and Multiplayer. The latter two are fairly obvious but Spec Ops is a new take for COD on a older concept which I will delve in to later. The whole package is impressive. There is quite a bit of gameplay here with all three modes bundled together though there is little doubt that mulitiplayer is the meat and potatoes of this game.
I remember when games used to have epic single-player story lines that sprawled multiple days with hours and hours of gameplay - this is not that game. Not to take anything away from the story as it is quite good, it's just short, really short. Consider it a quick way to toss away 3-5 hours depending on what difficulty you play it on. If you are buying this for single player you will surely be disappointed. I really enjoyed the story though I won't spoil anything for you. You have seen the videos, the locations and maybe this super spoilerific video (you have been warned, this link is a huge spoiler).
The single-player features an awesome musical score and graphics that will have you trying consume it all in the middle of a massive firefight. That obviously isn't the best of decisions, especially in the harder difficulties, but audibly and visual it really is fantastic. The snow-capped mountains of Kazakhstan, the scaling and destructible urban environments and the arid brown-tainted locations all provide unique battlegrounds and eye candy. There are improvements over its predecessor that should be noted even if you barely see them within the 5 hours. First up is the "infinite spawn points" that were a corner stone of the last game are seemingly nowhere to be found. Infinity Ward noted in the past that this was something they wanted to fix and it seems they came through. A.I. has also been improved from audible cues to just being generally overall more functional. This is a welcome addition from the last game though they still aren't quite perfect.
Spec Ops is the last of the modes I managed to get to as I just got around to it last night. In a nutshell think of Spec Ops as a challenge mode so to speak. You have seen challenge maps in Batman Arkham Asylum, or historical challenges in Madden games; this is a similar concept. The mode tosses a bunch of objectives with increasing difficulty and complexity at you in stand-alone missions so to speak. There really isn't a story and it's just you, some guns, a partner if you choose and some objectives. It is MOW2 stripped down to its basic gameplay elements and I am really enjoying it so far.
Last night we got stuck on the bridge map trying to push across it on Veteran with an attack chopper trying to turn us in to Swiss cheese all while fending off the opposition that was also storming the bridge against us. It is intense, frantic and a blast to play with friends which I highly suggest. Spec Ops is a welcome addition though I would have traded it in for a much longer single-player story.
And of course we can't forget about multiplayer. This is what almost everyone buys Call of Duty and Modern Warfare for. I am not going to address features excluded from the game so if you are looking for more ranting about the PC changes then you are in the wrong place. Regardless of my thoughts on changes vs. past incarnations of the game it is still a blast to play. Is lean gone? Yes it is. Does it hurt the game? No, but it does change it and promotes faster, less-camping gameplay if you ask me. I am horrible at multiplayer, make no doubt about it. I think I am up to Level 24 with a K/D ratio sub 1:1. Mikevercetti is amazing however, and he is great at stealing my kills as well. I still haven't adapted to using ****ty analog sticks in a FPS game and I probably never will. I caved this time around thanks to my IRL friends wanting to play this with me. With all that going against me I am still having fun getting my ass kicked and pulling off some solid kills. Much like titles including TF2, L4D2, Counter Strike, etc. it is the fun community aspect of playing with friends and some of those "oh ****" moments that keep me coming back. Rarely have I gone 4-14 in a round of any FPS game and still had a good time but MOW2 pulls it off which is a testament to how fun the multiplayer is.
MP is deep. There are a crap-load of guns to work your way through, various challenges within the mode that help you level up, give you more perks and make you a bigger badass as you progress. I am eyeballing a M16 right now but I have another 16 levels before I get there.
The MP game is not without its flaws however. Why the hell can't we choose what maps we want to play on? There should be no reason to be stuck playing maps that haven't really taken off with players. The lobby system is shoddy as hell at this point often taking too damn long to match you up, closing rooms, kicking people out for now reason, etc. The limit on players also bothers me. Some of these maps could easily support more than 6v6. The 9v9 domination maps could also handle some more players as well. I guess I really miss that aspect coming from someone who thrives on 16v16 TF2. I am not totally sold on the kill streak system as I feel there are some balance issues there though maybe people just haven't adapted to them yet. The helicopter gunship attacks are brutal and seem way too powerful. Care packages seem almost useless more often than not. And by the way, I fricken hate those gunship attacks just in case I didn't make that clear.
Even with these issues I see this becoming a staple of my multiplayer online action for the foreseeable future. There are flaws but the overwhelming amount of content in MP from maps, guns, additions, challenges is icing on an already sharp and entertaining package. This is not a perfect game. Single player is too short; multiplayer has its own share of bugs and issues. Regardless of issues it does all come in a very entertaining package with a lot of value if you get in to all of the modes. Don't buy this for single-player alone.
Much like my next big review (L4D2) if you aren't playing this with friends I think the overall experience takes a hit. Sure there is a touch of single-player here and you can run around capping fools online all by yourself but just how much fun is that?
The game really isn't all that different from Call of Duty 4 either. Some new maps, locations, a quick storyline, and then you pretty much get multiplayer with a few changes. That isn't a bad thing because the last game's multiplayer was excellent and the game as a whole was well regarded.
I definitely recommend this as a "buy" if you are looking to really get in to some multiplayer action and am not hung up on a lack of lean or dedicated servers. The consolization of the series is here to stay and we can either embrace the game for what it is now or hold on to the glory days and play older titles. I am not denying Activison and Infinity Ward seemingly took numerous steps to piss people and change the status quo. But if you can get past gripes and play the game I think most of you will find it enjoyable if you judge it on its own merits and not the past or other games. Personally I am always looking for new quality games and this fits the bill of providing hours and hours of future entertainment.
You are welcome to "stick it to the man" if you like but based on its merits Modern Warfare 2 is a solid, yet slightly different, game in the COD series that deserves a spot in your collection.

"Much like my next big review (L4D2) if you aren't playing this with friends I think the overall experience takes a hit."
I played L4D for the first time a few weeks ago with friends at a lan center and it was fun as **** but I get the same feeling as you do. I think the game would be really average if played by yourself, cuz you have no one to laugh about those o **** moments with. Completely unrelated to MW2 but yea. Asking for MW2 from my gf for christmas so I got nothing to add. Good review :P

this video that charred linked in another thread shows it pretty well. people die stupidly quick before they have a chance to react, he has a wallhack attached to his gun and the auto aim on the chopper makes is clearly overpowered. i don't see this as depth i see it as stupid ideas that they had to think up for a ea sports style sequel.

The mode can still be "deep" and have cheap aspects, I think that was kind of point. There is a lot to achieve, a ton of guns, plenty of add-ons and challenges. That to me makes it deep. But yes there is little doubt in my mind that the chopper is too damn powerful. I haven't seen a tactical nuke in-game yet but I believe Mikevercetti (regular poster here) has earned on. Its pretty rare but the copter is quite common and just too damn OP.
Honestly I'd like to see the kills you get automated killstreak perks not count towards your streak. That means you need to get 25 legit kills to get a nuke and not pound faces with the copter.

i suppose it depends on how you define deep. gameplay wise, quake is deep. this just looks shallow with loads of frustrating unlockable **** piled on top.

Yeah, I've earned a nuke. I've had it unlocked forever, but never used it because it just seemed pointless to me. Just figured, what the hell, and tossed it on. Got it my first game I played with it (31-1, 1 death being to the nuke) and never touched it again. It's cool for a couple times, but it's nothing spectacular. Kind of a gimmick type deal imo.
And I didn't steal that many of your kills lol. Plus, it was accidental. And thanks for the mention bro. When I was reading through this, I was wondering if you would say anything about me, and lo and behold, you did :P

The heartbeat censor is no different than the radar or UAV (things that were in your beloved COD4) and yet you see no reason to complain about those. The attachment is unreliable at best, and there is a perk that specifically counters it. The video you linked was of headquarters, which is arguably the worst mode, you can reliably know where the enemy team is going to be at all times, this makes getting huge killstreaks a lot easier.
Chopper Gunner and AC130 are rather bothersome, but there are ways to get rid of them. Stinger missile locks on to the enemy vehicle, and with the increased vehicle damage from stopping power pro you have plenty of ways to deal with the gunships.

haha. it's alright for a bit of a piss around, but it's not genre definining (scale = cs, unlocks = bf2, setting = modern) except for how for some reason loads of xbox live kids love it. for pissing about in big fights tf2 is better. for playing with friends l4d is better. for serious competitive fps 1.6 or quake live is better.
the radar and uav weren't as bad because you knew when uav was up, radar only shows when you've been seen / are shooting. and if you do get the perk which nulifies it it just adds to the other guys frustration because his crutch isn't reliable.

Its called "HQ Pro" now. The only difference is the headquarters shows for a couple of minutes but you cant capture it, so in all honesty its become less "pro" because all one has to do to capture the HQ is camp at it long enough for it to flip over to capurable, capture it, and camp some more.
I think Godsmak is just an angry person, and feels the need to throw a hissy fit and put others down in an attempt to make himself feel better as much as possible.

Everything is counterable. the heart monitor is only useful against: people that move very slow, people that dont have ninja, people that dont have heart monitors as well, people that are too bad to notice where the flow of enemies are coming from, etc.. I liked the heart monitor too when i didn't have a clue where people were coming from too. Not to mention you can change your class after you die if it bothers you that much and dominate that person. Again everything is counterable
The air ships arn't useful against people in doors (most buildings), and you can just shoot them down or teamates can - alot of people know how or if you die just change class and kill it.
To the people talking about how easy the game is: try playing against harder people - there are alot of terribles. I know p2p system doesn't make this an easy feat but if youhave friends you can queue 6v6 against eachother or make a private match.
To the people talking about l4d being funner to play with friends: yes, i suppose if you only have 3 friends, nerds. (lol :p)
The people talking about the ACR: yes its very good. You don't really even need site with it either because the default ironsite is one of the best ive seen.
i currently use marathon pro, lightweight pro, ninja pro, ACR with silencer, the auto pistol, throwing knife or sticky bomb... works pretty well... i like faster gameplay as I usually play quake2/3/live. i get alot of knives but when i need to slow down the ACR comes in handy. The m4A1 is a great weapon until the acr though - almost identical but less accurate

CoD:MW2 and ODST are proof you just need a franchise to sell.
Personally I wouldn't pay $69.99 for a DLC amount of content.

Set your eyes on ACR instead of M16. M16 is a burst gun (I hate that), ACR is full automatic like M4A1 and seems solid with basically no recoil (I'm lvl 55 as we speak).
Ground War supports all the usual maps on larger playerbase than 6v6. Personally I think the maps are fit for 6v6, and the ground war chaos annoys me, much like 21v21 in COD4 did.
Care packages are your easiest way of getting a gunship or AC-130 (random content, but 4 killstreak instead of 10+) so I don't think they're ****.
MP got some server issues but just find a new server and forget about it - lag can be avoided.
Nice review

Scar lacks ammo so it gets really hard to get good kill streaks on FFA and TDM until you unlock the extended mags, which isent too hard I suppose. I'm still using it at 47, but that's because im a completiton freak and I still need moar headshots to finish all the achievements for it. Honestly I wouldn't use it though if it wasent for the completion.

Anyways, I've never had a problem building up to 7 kills for my harrier with my setup which is SCAR and the first Machine pistol. Worse comes to worse if you're building a kill streak, chances are you should get the opportunity to pick up a downed opponents gun.
Extended Mags ARE a great addon for the scar though since the 20 round mag can hurt at times. Bling extended mags + silencer and for the pistol silencer + FMJ...domination!

I like left 4 dead 2 more than MW2 however I've mostly been playing MW2 simply because pubbing left 4 dead is worse than aids. If I don't have at least 1-2 people to play l4d with I refuse to play because it is a miserable experience. MW2 however even if my team sucks I can still have a great time pubbing by going rambo.
I really enjoyed the mw2 single player, and it is the first single player I've played through fully since Bioshock.
My issues with the game are much the same as yours, ****ty lobby system, no map voting, team size caps, and obviously the lack of dedicated servers/modding.
All in all I'll probably be more mw2 than left 4 dead 2 since I can solo pub and actually enjoy myself.

About heli's being overpowered - They can be taken down by launchers fairly easily and it's a frequent occurrence nowadays I've found. It will only grow more and more common too as people get higher level and access to the better launchers.
Also in terms of more players...I've found that those 9v9 maps are killstreak fest and spam fest games. Like ground war on the map wasteland is just ridiculous. It's either you're out in the wide open field with 4 snipers trying to shoot you or you're in the trench with 10 flashbangs, 5 stickies, and 2 sentry guns and guys camping the exit holes with TARs. Quite frankly I think 6v6 is pretty ideal considering the game is more of a tactical shooter than really twitch and skill based.
Care packages are awesome because they fairly often yield 5+ streak rewards. I've never seen one give a nuke, but I've seen EMPs fairly often as well as AC130s and chopper gunners. I think they're fairly balanced too because you can't use an AC130 from a care package to build up your killstreak (to another ac 130, for example), but it does give you the option of sidestepping the killstreak buildup for a chance at better reward earlier. They also add an element of map control to the game because they're not instant and you have to control a certain area for a few seconds if you want the reward.
Anyways this is the first CoD game I've bought in a long time and as I'm getting adjusted to the game I'm liking it more and more. As someone who's grown up mostly with Half-Life and Quake based shooters, it's kind of hard to get adjusted to the fact that smarts and tactics play a much bigger role in success than do actual reaction times and finger skills. As you do learn the maps and the game better though, it becomes incredibly fun.
Side note: I didn't get the massive feel I got from previous CoDs from this singleplayer. You are always playing as essentially the same faction you don't get to play the other side at all.
Care Packages can't give you a nuke.
I totally agree with you about ground war, I hate it so much. Modern Warfare just feels so much better 6v6, it's a great number for the game.

makes sense about nukes. It'd be retarded
Sidenote - anyone know how killstreaks work for competitive MW2? Do they ban certain ones? Ban all of them? They seem kind of retarded for competition purposes.

For competition play, they play under promod settings. No killstreaks, no attatchments and no perks.

Oh, they definitely are, but it's the only way they can really make things level for all players. Otherwise, you'd have people *****ing "you only won because you used X perk/X attatchment"

I guess you were not that great at these games since mapcontrol was a huge part of those as well.

I have no idea what you're insinuating? When did I say I was bad at mapcontrol? When did I say I was bad at anything? lol... Nice diss, I guess...

Chill I guess I somewhat misinterpreted then
