Since E3 the announcement of Left 4 Dead 2 has some fans clamoring for the sequel and others up in arms ready to boycott the title. I covered this last week and addressed the boycott group which at the time was a mere 3,000 or so. Now this group, of which I bet many will still buy the game, is now upwards of 27,000.
Valve isn't oblivious to the internet and they have surely been following this group and the media. Kotaku finally got a chance to talk to Gabe Newell and set some of the rumors and exaggerations straight.
First off Newell insists everyone out there is jumping to conclusions and that the release of the sequel does not mean the death blow to content for the original. He promises content is still coming and they will continue to support the title just like their other games. He tells Kotaku:"In addition to the recently released Survival Pack, we are releasing authoring tools for Mod makers, community matchmaking, 4x4 matchmaking, and more new content during the coming months for L4D1," Newell says. "We also agree with our customers that there needs to be an interoperability plan for players of L4D1 and L4D2, as multiplayer games are driven by the cohesiveness of their community”.
He notes that they will continue to support the over 3 million customers in the L4D1 community. Now does this mean a year from now we will be seeing new free campaigns for the original, probably not. I have a feeling Valve may stick to publishing some great user generated maps much like they do with TF2 now. There was never a time line of support or a promise of new campaigns or things like that. But they game isn't going to be abandoned.
The other big news of course is the interoperability between to the two games which I insisted on in my last write up. I am glad to see Valve realizes the seriousness of that concern as splitting the two communities would be a big mistake. Other than the support and interoperability I felt most of the other bullet points from the boycott group were a bit silly and subjective.
If Valve delivers in this manner I have a feeling they will be winning over a lot of these "complainers". As it stands right now this group isn't even 1% of the consumers who own the game.
I still insist this is a lot of *****ing over spilled milk. Props to Valve for actually giving us a timely sequel unlike that other franchise I love to talk about...

I had to look up what 'interoperability' meant when I first read that article.
I respect Gabe a lot, and I'm hoping his words are true, but I have my doubts.

I don't really see what the big problem is, especially if they allow the origional campaigns to be played in L4D2 (I haven't done any great research into this, so if there was a confirmation either way someone say.)
I'd rather not fork out full price since it seems like more of an expansion than a sequal but I will still probably buy it.
Admittidly some things are stupid (incendiary rounds - hopefully there will be a command to disable them for competitive players) and novelty (melee weapons) but it is still 4(?) new campaigns, which is basically what you paid for when you bought L4D.

That is what he is implying there, something along those lines. Ideally you would just load up L4D2 and if you have 1 already you never have to load it again. It should all be playable within 2 and you can use gameplay search settings if you want to play in one or the other or search both. This is what I hope to see.

I have such a large hard on for L4D that I would probably fork over 50-60 bucks for just one new campaign and some new weapons, lol.

If you are among the 27,000 people that have the right and have complained/boycotted then you are not a true zombie fan and for sure not a hardcore fan of L4D. There, I said it fellow nerds and nerdettes. I'm such a hardcore zombie fan that I have a mass amount of can goods in the basement and boxes of 9mm rounds in old army ammo boxes that I am hording for the next apocalypse (which could include a zombie outbreak, hey that swine flu could mutate into something else).
