What I like about watching a new game unfold in the tournament realm is that it becomes a race to see who can find the winning techniques.

One player, participating in his first Brawl tournament (Saturday at the University of California, Irvine) said he was practicing for hours on end, hoping to dominate with his Wolf. For the most part, he did really well ...

... except he couldn't escape the chain throwing of King Dedede. The Wolf player lost to the Dedede player twice in the double-elimination tournament (seems like my cry for preventing double jeopardy has fallen on deaf ears) leaving the Wolf player to beg for the move to be disallowed in tournament play.

But that wasn't the only tactic being discussed at Saturday's UCI tournament. Bowser, as big and mean as he/it is, can grab a character, somersault in the air, and land belly down ... hard ... giving the opponent some good-sized damage.

I'll get back to Bowser later on. First, let me show you the Dedede chain grab. Fast forward to 2:34

Please excuse me because I laugh every time I see it. Also, it should be noted that the stage used in this video I believe has not been allowed in any California tournaments so far. Finally, it seems as if this player does it with about a frame left to spare; the people I've seen do the chain grab do it much quicker.

OK, you can obviously see why some people are looking at this chain grab as a problem. If your character is up against a pillar or wall, the Dedede can do an infinite chain grab.

Should the move be banned? Absolutely not.

* -- The game isn't even out in the United States, so we don't know if the game is going to play differently (I always make note of the Melee-Roy factor). In the three Brawl tournaments held in Southern California, a Dedede user has not cracked the top eight. If the move was so powerful, more players would go with the king.

* -- Players are still learning the game. I'm sure there are going to be other infinites out there that will be exposed.

* -- The move does not guarantee a win. The stage you saw in the video has not been allowed so far. Most of the stages allowed in tournaments have a drop point, so Dedede can chain grab only so far before running out of room.

* -- It is also up to the Dedede user to execute the move perfectly, much like how a Melee Ice Climbers player has to time it right to perform the "Wobbles" technique.

= = =

The Bowser grab can also bring laughter. However, there's a problem that can occur. Fast forward to 1:05.

Should this move be banned? Again, no. This time, there's a little bit more technical aspect to this. According to Tony "Gimpyfish" Dennis (who won the tournament), both players can influence exactly where Bowser lands thanks to the D.I. (directional influence). So if you know it's coming, then make sure to go in the direction that provides a landing instead of open air. The Bowser will sail left, sail right or straight down.

Also, you saw that it had to go to sudden death. The normal tournament settings regarding tie breakers (in order) are:

* -- Most stock remaining
* -- Lower percentage if stock is even
* -- If it's still even, then sudden death is played out

Technically, in a case like the one above, the sudden death has to be played out because they're tied in stock (zero) and percentage (zero). I'm hoping that the Tournament Powers that Be do not amend the rule for this situation when Brawl tournaments become frequent. Also, players should learn how to create the "safe landing" if they are grabbed and thrown down.

This is very interesting, and reminds me of some of the early Warcraft 3 tournament moments where certain players were still learning build orders and what each race was capable of.

It's great to see someone come through with a stellar Dedede or pull out an upset win with an underdog character. The first time I saw an Ice Climbers in Melee desync and destroy another player, for example, is my most memorable moment in the game.
Games like Smash have so much depth and players will always spend hours upon hours learning new combos, glitches and moves, so it's lots of fun to see the scene constantly evolve. I actually had an interesting conversation with someone last week about glitches/exploits and whether or not knowing them makes you a better player. I believe that just like in Football or Basketball, you need to take into account every aspect of a situation in order to be the best player possible. Sure, a top Brawl player might not USE the Dedede chain throw, but he has to at least be aware of it and avoid any situation where he may be caught in it.

they removed wave dashing, air dodging and a bunch of other stuff in this game. As far as I am concerned it really isn't competitive anymore.

Either that or its a NEW GAME AND WILL BE COMPETITIVE IN DIFFERENT WAYS.

You're probably that guy still playing CS 1.6 for fun and making comments on how "its still the best" like an old man recounting the golden years.

New games come out.  New games are different.

Besides, N64 smash is still the best.  ;\

i actually dont play cs 1.6. I dont deny the new smash will be fun, but theyve trimmed and restructured instead of expanded on a winning formula.

I personally dont care, I was never pro at smash or w.e, but when you start talking about it like it's an e sport, I dont really agree. The majority of the changes have been made to the items which afaik pros dont play with anyway.

I was disappointed simply because melee was a perfect fighting game; really easy to pick up and play but insanely difficult to master. The pros were just on an entirely different level. When you mess around with success like that and just dumb down the formula, youre alienating the hardcore players, most of whom bought a wii just for this game.

If anything, this just makes me happy I bought a 360.

^^ Agreed

As long as you understand that Brawl is not Melee 2.0, then you will know that Brawl will be competitive in its own ways. It might not have a deep metagame like Melee (just a thought), but it will be competitive in some way.

@ Nochtis

People make the complaints every time a new game in a competitive series is released. It never fails. "The old one was more balanced and/or took more skill blah blah blah". Truth is, Melee was an excellent game but not the perfect fighting game you claim it is. Did you forget the crazily imbalanced roster, banned tournament stages, glitches, zero-to-death kills and exploits? You're also comparing melee's meta game established over six years to Brawl's, even though it hasn't been released stateside yet, which doesn't make any sense.

i completely agree with what your saying.

Some people yesterday were talking about banning the chain grab, and i don't see why.  It's exactly like Sheik in Melee.

Essentially, it just comes down to character johns.  If you don't like being chain grabbed, pick a different character.

I almost got punched in the face during the finals of a tournament on saturday for using the chain grab.  The player warned me not to do it, I grabbed him three times, he paused the game and jumped in my face with his fist ready.

This is really an exciting time for the SSB community as new caveats and such are found out and explored. I'm really excited that your blog has "moved up" so to speak. Wishing you the best of luck with this ;\
