There are 77 competitors set to battle it out. That number sounds good but consider this: A lot of the players are first-time competitors. I haven't seen so many rookies at a Smash tournament ever, maybe since The Battle for NorCal back in 2005, in San Francisco. I guess it's just the cycle of the tournament scene; some people might leave and there's always fresh blood ready to join in.
That's not to say this is a noobfest. There are some veteran competitors. Stay tuned throughout the day for updates.

4:53 p.m.
Sorry everyone, but I unfortunately have to leave the tournament early to take care of personal matters. I seriously apologize for this, and I will try to get results of the singles tournament when it becomes available. Thank you for your understanding and have a good evening.
4 p.m.
DSF and D.C. are your team tournament winners. I'll be back at 5 p.m. with the next update.
3:29 p.m.
DSF and Psycho Midget were the last two standing in Round 1, both Snake players. Psycho Midget took out DSF after about a 90-second slugfest.
3:23 p.m.
Doppleganger and Psycho Midget have held off The BOSS and Deth, 3-2 and will play DSF and D.C. in the championship. Round 5 was a back-and-forth deal, but it seemed as though it was over once The BOSS' Lucas was knocked out for the final time.
3:17 p.m.
The BOSS and Deth have rallied to tie the match at 2-2. In round 4, it came down to Doppleganger and The BOSS. It appeared BOSS had sent Doppleganger (Zelda) out twice. Doppleganger avoided two up-smashes and sent the BOSS' Lucario off the stage, but the BOSS came back and took out Doppleganger for the win. Round 5 is underway.
3:10 p.m.
The BOSS and Deth have avoided a shutout and trail 2-1 in the losers final match. The BOSS switched from Lucario to Lucas, so we'll see if the switch continues to pay off.
2:56 p.m.
The losers final of the team tournament will pit Deth and The BOSS vs. Psycho Midget and Doppleganger. So out of the dozens of newcomers that have participated in today's team competition, none of them will sniff the podium. The final three teams are all seasoned veterans.
By the way, aside from the end of the continuation rule (yea!), I would like to see a return of the Best-of-7 championship. Yes, it's long, and with Brawl being a slower-paced game, matches could be 49 minutes at its very longest. Maybe that's just my old school talking.
2:31 p.m.
DSF and D.C. are in the finals after defeating The BOSS and Deth, 3-0. DSF is really liking Snake, and I'm guessing he'll go with the MGS protagonist in the singles tournament. But first, he and D.C. will try to close out the deal in the team competition.
2:15 p.m.
The singles tournament is going to start now, even though the team competition is still far from done.
1:59 p.m.
DSF and D.C. defeat Doppleganger and Psycho Midget, 2-1. The final two rounds could have gone either way. It's just a battle of attrition.
1:49 p.m.
I wouldn't consider it a true ditto, but in the DSF-DC vs. Doppleganger-Psycho Midget match, it came down to a battle of Snakes: DSF and Psycho Midget. It appeared Psycho (considered the best Snake so far) had DSF off the stage, but DSF came back and punched him out for the Round 1 win.
Here's something to note: DSF is perhaps one of the most versatile players in Southern California. If he remembers the success he had with Snake against Psycho Midget right there, will he be willing to have a Snake ditto in the singles tournament against Psycho (if they meet up)?
1:38 p.m.
EzynJay and Lucky defeat Forward and Zarelid, 2-0. Another back-and-forth round for both teams.
The next featured match is scheduled to be DieSuperFly and D.C. vs Doppleganger and Psycho Midget.
1:33 p.m.
The first featured match is Forward and Zarelid vs. Lucky and EzynJay. The first round went back and forth for the most part. It came down to Lucky and Zarelid, who traded grab attacks. Lucky (3D) knocked Zarelid's Fox up and out of the screen for the win. It seemed as though Lucky wanted to end it a couple times with a chain grab, but Zarelid moved too far to pull together a string of throws. Round 2 is in progress.
12:54 p.m.
Of note, all but one television is small. Usually, small televisions are reserved for friendlies or the most insignificant match of a competition. How will the players adjust to playing on small screens?
Psycho Midget is teaming with Doppleganger today (no sign of Gimpyfish at the tournament). I just saw them win their second match of the tournament. With all of the rookies, they could be a favorite to get to the finals.
12:48 p.m.
I'll say this much about the community, this isn't the 2007 L.A. Dodgers, where there was a divide between young and veteran. What matters to mostly everyone here at the venue is that they play as many matches as possible and have a good time doing so. People are introducing themselves to others; veterans are helping out rookies, and there's smiles all around. Nobody vocally saying that they're out for blood (at least not yet).
The one team I'll be keeping an eye on is Zarelid and Forward. They're two established Melee veterans, and I believe this is the first time they'll be in the big Brawl spotlight.
1:19 p.m.
This is something else I've noticed from today's competitors; they're talking in a casual way. They're drawing up conversation. I bring this up because I would rarely see it in a Melee tournament. Everyone was concentrated on just playing the match. Now, we're in a situation where people are just chatting about whatever. It's not happening at every match, but enough matches to where it's noticeable.

Any idea what they're using as far as levels? Curious if they have an official banned list yet

I don't understand why
Frigate Orpheon is a counterpick.... compared to some of the stages that are banned.

We try to cover the California tournament scene (and other areas), with an emphasis on "Super Smash Bros. Brawl" and "Madden."
