yep, I'm going to do it. I am going to bad mouth this game that is praised and loved by Americans realizing that I wont get much support since the majority of gameriot readers and bloggers are... from America (c/d?)
my BIGGEST issue with Rockband is how it basically copied Konami's Drummania/Guitar Freaks series (DM/GF). When I watch clips on DM/GF on youtube, it infuriates me to read comments which says something like "is this like a copy of rockband?"
W T F?
It was almost 7 years ago when i first picked up the drum sticks at the arcade trying out drummania 3rd mix and ever since then I was pretty much became a perma fan of this particular game from Konami.
It annoys me how the presence of DM & GF is so low in the states. It's like being stuck in blackwing lair when u can go to naxx. Playing rockband (drums especially) is like the kiddy version of DM/GF.
When it started:
Konami's music video game division, Bemani, released its first product - Beatmania, in 1997. It led a revolution to arcade and console gaming. It wasn't all about joysticks and buttons anymore. No more back back front front punch combos. It became TREMENDOUSLY popular in Japan, so with the momentum of Bemani's success, they then released the world famous Dance Dance Revolution. This game also became a HUGE highlight in arcade gaming history. I dont need to talk about DDR too much because of its strong presence in the states.
After a little reading I came across this in wiki:
"Konami has not mass produced an American version of DrumMania, primarily since MTV Games holds the US patent for "drum simulation games", which MTV took full advantage of with the release of Rock Band. Even with this possible obstacle in mind, Konami has tested English builds of DrumMania and Guitar Freaks V4 at the ATEI exhibition in London and at a Brunswick Zone bowling alley in Naperville, Illinois - though official releases have not been announced. Nonetheless, imported versions of DrumMania can be found in various locations across the United States and Canada."
Breaks my heart to see this, thats like banning wow from china

Lets get back to the subject, Rockband guitar/drum vs DM/GF.
Guitar hero, released in 2005, has 5 keys on it, while Guitar Freaks, released in 1999, has 3 keys on it
HEY, 5>3?? GUITAR HERO MUST BE 1000X HARDER!!!!!!!
Okay. Maybe the guitar part of the Rockband isn't that far difficult from GF, It's probably safe to say they are equal on par. Yet at the professional level, GF is more demanding because of accuracy. Rockband guitar does not record accuracy, which makes skilless strum spamming almost error free. You cant do that on GF though.... EVERY strum affects the "meter". An extra strum will be calculated as a "miss" and hits the "meter". The objective in GF is to clear the song with as many perfects as possible.
I'm sure you've all seen enough clips of Guitar hero crap from all those wsvg clips, so have a look at a GF clip or two and tell me what u think

(got a scream-o english song for u whities in case asian music makes ur ears bleed)

Hey, not that far from stuff like uh.. wuts it called.. through the fire and flames rite?
Rockband drums v.s. DM
HAHA..... look at a clip first
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=unXkTEvBEpU
Song name is Onihime, difficulty lvl is 95, out of a total of 99. The player in the clip is currently the #1 player in the world.
At first glance you can see the hi-hat,snare, hi/low tom and cymbal + the bass, thats a total of 5 pads and bass v.s. rockband's 4pad+bass. The positioning of the pads are also somewhat almost similar to a basic setup to a real drumkit while the rockband pads look absolutely retarded. I am sure there is no arguement about which game is more difficult.
Other facts about DM/GF:
Session play is possible if machines are linked
E-amusement system alows player to go online and "battle" each other on top of participating in updated mini-tournaments online for high scores on a series of selected songs. There is also a ladder determined by "skill points" with the card.
~~
To the rockband fans and lovers, if u find yourself already "capped" at this game, please do try and take a shot at DM/GF. The only reason I could see DM/GF being unpopular are the genre of songs avaliable. Songs on rockband are more "rocky" while songs on DM/GF are more "poppy"
Don't be intimidated by DM/GF's difficulty, it can also be very noob friendly with options like auto-bass and basic/advanced mode to 99% of the songs

Arcades are a dieing breed here in the states, unlike in Japan/China, so this cuts down on the chances of people playing it there.
If it is anyone's fault it sits with Konami. MTV can't have exclusive use of drums in the US because Activision is going to do it with Guitar Hero World Tour, and I can promise you there was no deal worked out to allow that as they are heated rivals.
The American populace isn't to blame for GF/DM's failure in the states so far, that is solely Konami's issue.
btw the instruments for the console version of dm/gf is cheaper than rockband
DDR is arguably the innovator in the "active gaming" genre, for lack of better terminology. It has been around longer, possibly cheaper to make? Does DDR used licensed music? Does GF/DM? Instruments more expensive than the pad? Who knows.
Shine on, you crazy diamond.
P.S. U PROBLY SUX AT ROCKBAND THATS WHY U QQ LAWLZ
rockband is for singing drunk with your friends and letting hot drunk girls sit on your lap while you teach them how to play
stop thinking it's some kind of esport
we're on a website about games, obviously im going to blog about the gaming aspect of the game, not how it's party-friendly. Just coz i dont touch on that doesn't mean I don't realize it
Casual gamers make up a much larger percentage of gamers, and without casuals, pro gamers would not be existent. Name a single game which is developed towards a pro community and not for a casual community that is well spread throughout esports. Thats right, there isn't any!
Same goes for Rock Band and GH. I watched both your videos and whilst I am impressed by the top players abilities, I couldn't watch a tourney of it, whereas if I saw some Guitar Hero or Rock Band being played, I'd sit around and watch because I am familiar with the games and I find it interesting to watch them play and even dream of being as good as them someday.
Have you ever played Contra for PS2, thats a fun game but damn its so much harder than the SNES one, does that make it better? Theres a lot of things that factor in, and the criteria are defintely different for a rythym game than for most other games.
Cry me a river imo.
then again, u're probably another "frog in the well"
