Ah yes, the crown jewel of the Instant Action platform. Pretty much why IA has the amount of people it does today. FEL is the reason we all wanted to sign up for the service to begin with. FEL is the spiritual sequal to the Tribes series, much like Bioshock was the spiritual sequal to the systemshocks.
However FEL isn't going exactly for what Tribes was. Rather it is a lite version due to the size of the team, and the fact that its played in-browser. There are no vehicles or turrets, atm there is no way to play modded maps (there might be a "ghetto" way to play player-made maps, but you can't play them as a host in a normal pick-up game, as everyone has to manually download the map.). There is a small amount of UI mods atm, to help you see flag carriers, or reduce UI clutter. But it is definetely a much smaller game than tribes with 4 guns and 3 maps (2 small 1 large) at the moment.
FEL is characterized by its special movement system. You can hover/fly with jet packs. The term used is "skiing" because you fly up upward hill slopes, and down onto downward hill slopes to pick up tremendous speed. Activate your jetpack by pressing RMB. This causes you to become frictionless. Hit MMB or space to jet into the air. Activating your jetpack doesn't drain energy, but flying does. energy is recovered when you let go of the fly button, and faster if you turn off jet packs alltogether. The goal with jetpacks is to be able to fly around your oppent fast enough that he can't hit you, and to be able to catch a flag runner/escape with a flag. Shooting in FEL is done like anyother FPS, LMB. There are no hand grenades, smoke grenades, or flash bangs. There are 4 guns in FEL:
The Chaingun: Like a machinegun it takes a second to power up before it shoots, and can overheat. Aim ahead of the enemy with this one, or you aint gonna hit jack. Very hard to use, but not udnerpowered.
The Rocket Launcher: Supposed to be our bread and butter unless we snipe, this is a fast moving straight shot. you still have to aim a little ahead if they're on the run or flying, but not as much as the chaingun.
The Grenade Launcher: In its current incarnation, this is the best weapon to use, it doesn't have as good a range as the RL, but it moves just as fast and does more damage than the other two. If they're on the ground, or are falling, pull this baby out and watch them explode. Overpowered imo, way to easy to hit people with if your not retarded.
The Sniper: Great against noobs, I'm not much of a snipe so I don't use it often, but I have had the crap kicked out of me by a good sniper. Its useful close and long range, if you have good aim. The sniper takes 3ish seconds to charge, and emits a beam of light so if you put it on someone, they know its coming and can get the hell out of the way. but a good sniper can still get them, just takes practice.
There are 3 maps in FEL at the moment: Nivosus (snow), Moonshine (grass), and Zenith Cauldron (desert). Each is a little different. Nivosus is like a small ZC with tall bases. Moonshine has sniper towers in the middle on each side, and a canyon running down the middle. ZC is huge and lags alot for me because Vista is gay. There are reloading stations at each base, enemy teams can use enemy reload places atm.
There are currently only 3 game modes; CTF, Deathmatch, and Team Deathmatch. CTF is the most played mode, and its the comptetitive game mode for FEL and the Tribes series. The other modes are more for fun, but CTF is srs business.
FEL is in beta at the moment, open for anyone. there are no purchasable items, but be sure there will be. I currently know of only one FEL fansite, http://www.legionsplayers.com/
