I guess a little bit about me first. I used to play a priest on Tichondrius but barely play anymore, though I do read Gameriot from time to time (go ming!). I work in the games industry as a programmer, and looking at a couple of threads in arenajunkies today and looking at the general quality of PvP videos today there's definitely no limit on creativity.
Anyway, the point of this blog is to demonstrate the power available to creative individuals (which is why I need your help) using the latest technology to quickly and painlessly put together a full 3D game, the process being blogged in excruciating detail here.
A fantastic new oppurtunity opened up a week ago when UNITY, which was previously a $900 personal licence engine, decided to make their engine free for non-commercial use. It's the perfect engine for this because, unlike most other game engines (Unreal, CryEngine, Gamebryo, Source etc) it minimizes the actual programming involved.
If you're interested in this blog or just want to know a bit more about UNITY you should head over to:
And download it for yourself. There are a set of in-depth tutorials and documentation on how it all works and some great demos as well.
The other thing you might want to familiarize yourself with is JavaScript which is the scripting language the UNITY engine uses. The scripting will be well explained and especially if you have any programming background it shouldn't be that hard to get a handle on.
Unfortunately, before we get too carried away, we need some level of pre-production. What are we going to make? If anyone has any ideas of a gameplay mechanic they'd like to explore post it in a comment. Don't worry too much about the details and focus more on the type of game and what happens that makes it "fun". Also keep in mind the scope, MMO is not a viable suggestion, but some aspect of an MMO that makes it fun is a good suggestion.

I've tried my hand using the unreal tournament editor before, is this anything like it? i remember that being somewhat easy to use and fun too.
That said, i am seriously considering taking computer science as a major in college and moving to game design after that. This sounds like a really cool program, look forward to your blogs
