How seriously do you take WoW?
I come to you today with a question. It's something many-a-player has asked themselves over their time in Azeroth, myself included. Why now? At some point in the last few weeks I came home after a long Sunday at work; I work for an energy company and the weather had caused our storm accounts to overflow, meaning a lot of accounting work needed to be done before the end of the year. I woke up at 5:30, worked for 10-12 hours, took a girl to a movie and came home. I logged on to use my transmute CD and got the proverbial "let's do games" message.
I reluctantly agreed, failing to mention that tiredness is my cryptonite. Drunk? High? I can handle it, and some might say I play even better. But when it comes to mental accuity, and let's face it 10+ hours of straight accounting work will numb anyone's mind, you may as well introduce me with a "bring on the fail banner". And boy, did I fail. I got gibbed against RMP without bubbling, because I felt it prudent to run into LoS and HoJ the Priest. Yes, it's possible to be that bad. And one of my teammates raged like I have never heard rage before.
ARE YOU ******* CLICKING?! HOLY **** YOU'RE TERRIBLE YOU SHOULD KILL YOURSELF I MEAN IF I WAS YOU I WOULD PUT A SCREWDRIVER THROUGH MY HEAD. GOD YOU'RE BAD, DID YOU GO WAKE UP THIS MORNING AND DRINK A GLASS OF "I'M GOING TO PLAY LIKE ****" JUICE?
I'm paraphrasing there, but it's fairly accurate for the tone of his screaming. I mean that literally, I had to take my headphones off and was still listening to him. Rather than yelling back as I would have done if this had been during, say, a soccer game... I laughed. This bothered him even more, but I couldn't help it. The sheer absurdity of someone getting so worked up over a video game... a video game, was laughable to me.
So what causes this vast variation in how seriously we play the game? I'm sure personality plays into it, but as easy-going as I am IRL I've been known to have a short fuse in similar situations. I'd say the level at which we play the game plays in there too, but I've seen plenty of baddies raging and plenty of "pros" taking things in stride. Perhaps the biggest factor is the investment we have in the game.
I'm not talking necessarily about time investment. There are people with an awful lot of people playing this game, but it's still secondary to them when contrasted against their real lives. From what I can tell it's the emotional investment in the game. Is there any question that some of the most infamous nerd-ragers in the game are those that play the most excessively? Or rather, those that have the least going for them outside of WoW? Naturally if you derive a great deal of your self-worth from WoW, and I have little doubt that many people do, then that would be the choice medium to demean and self-aggrandize.
Or is there no correlation at all between rage and emotional investment? Do you dismiss the "it's just a game" argument in light of the fact that your time is still time, and you don't like havig it wasted? How seriously do you take WoW?

Do you feel like a beggar when you always write that last line?

Not really. The contest is over, but the main reason I always add that reminder in the first place was because it gives me a good idea of what blogs people enjoy more than others and helps me decide what I should be including

Lack of sleep affects performance more than anything (not just in WoW).
Oversleeping doesn't help either, wake up all slow ;p

Yep. After 18 hours awake and 11 of them being spent working, I'm pretty useless :P

Seriously there is nothing I take as serious as games in general, although I would never tell someone to kill himself because he played bad. Usually the people I play with become my e-friends so it seems kinda inapproriate. That said, I rage in every game, doesn't matter if it's irl or ig, if I lose because of someone else. I hate losing. 1st or die. I remember having loud discusions during my 11 years playing football (not fatball you american *****) in the halftime, I remember even having fistfights although I'd never start them.Needless to say I was captain on my team and 50% of my performance was screaming all over the field.
I raged hardcore while playing softball in schoolsport at girls. As long as I feel I play better than anyone else on my team, or at least the one who continously makes mistakes, be sure to hide somewhere because I'll go mad**** crazy on your ass.
As odd as it sounds jacque cousteau once said:
"There is nothing that should be taken as serious as a game" and I couldn't agree more. I need competition. Everything outside of competition is lame and really never graps my attention. I'm pretty scary tbh

Hahaha, see I'm fiercely competitive on the field but when it comes to video games I just see them purely as a source of entertainment. Not as a realm for competition.

I found myself today competing with myself that I'm not allowed to leave the kitchen until I manage to kick an aluminiumfoilball at least 7 times in a row, lulz.

I have a tendancy to rage pretty hard, but only when it comes to PvP (I take PvE seriously, but I'm usually my worst enemy in those regards; I don't rage hard on other people, atleast not to their face). I guess it's just my competitive nature; I hate losing, more than anything else in the world. Not only that but raging seems to be an effective way to motivate your team mates into playing better (even if they'll eventually hate you, lol). For example, I'll start smack talking bg pugs not because I'm particularly mad, but because usually people want to shut up the 'bad guy' and 'prove them wrong'. It seems to work well, atleast better than being constructive and calm.

I think long-term it doesn't, but I do see where you're coming from

Depends on the day, if I'm on, if I have some chocolate nearby, whether or not I've been dumped, you know, the normal factors.
I'm serious insofar as I care about maximizing what I do, but not serious in that I don't rage against mechanics I can't control.
I just laugh and move on.
Oh and a plus one since you asked so nicely.

all these terms like, its just a game, real life more important etc are all over used cliche terms that really mean nothing.
people play because in some form or another it brings them enjoyment. playing a video game IS something you do "in real life".
just because some people are passionate about doing well at whatever is they're doing (in this case arena) doesn't somehow make them a bad person.Â
it's pretty much just a cop out the failures use to justify failing to themselves. "lol its just a game why so serious?" please, there's also another old saying, there's nothing worth doing that's not worth doing right.

Good points.
Perhaps you and I view video games as something completely different and that's the real difference. I see them purely as a source of entertainment, rather than a competitive sphere. I don't know why this is, perhaps because my real life is such that gaming has always been secondary.
I didn't say someone was a bad person though for being passionate, I just thought it was ridiculous. WoW has zero repercussions outside of it's own game world. If you crash your car it will impact all aspects of your life, if your character gets deleted the impact on anything but WoW will be non-existent. That's part of why I can't take it as seriously.
If you're playing for money, it's different.

I've noticed that people who play certain classes tend to be the biggest ragers.
Rogues and warriors come to mind. Lately it's def been locks though(but with fair reason)

Yeah it was hilarious. One game I closed my eyes for a few seconds and he died haha. Every time I told him I should probably sleep, and then he'd want to queue again and get mad when we lost. Lol it was pretty good.
All things good.
