This part of the blog is about what Blizzard needs to do to make Battle.Net cater the features that don't necessarily involve competitive gaming.
Friends List
This needs a significant face lift. Players need to be able to click on games their friends join for sure and I am 100% sure this will be implemented. This was one of the biggest pain in the ***** of Brood War. There was a third party program that let you, but I think Blizzard will do it.
Second we need to be able to have unlimited friends, or significantly more (if they need to save hard drive space). I had, and know many others who had, a full friends list of active players and couldn't add more because of the limit. With the new technologies around, I'm sure this will be implemented as well.
Auto-Matching
This should be implemented because sometimes I don't feel like creating or searching for games. Sometimes I only have time for one game and need to be able to hop right in without the tedious work of finding a matchup on a real map (AKA Not ZC, Fastest, etc).
Filters
This is a must have. If there is ever a game that is along the likes of DOTA for starcraft, I will cry, so hard. DOTA is the worst thing to ever happen to an RTS game. I know some of you like DOTA, but it ruined Warcraft 3 Battle.Net since there is no filter. If there is a filter my disgust for DOTA will diminish a little. I also hate seeing all the ZC and fastest maps in SC:BW. It taints the skill required to play the game effectively.
Most of this is so obvious that I'm sure blizzard will implement most all of it. It is always possible, however, they could overlook these basic needs. I have confidence is Blizzard though. They make quality games every time.

There is a filter in WC3, but it utterly sucks.
In fact, I like DOTA, but you are right, a better filter for custom games is needed.
Maybe there could be a way to "tag" your game, and based on that "tag", you could sort all the custom games in something like "game channels". So if you want to play DOTA, you can find them in the "DOTA games channel", or all the footies games in their footies channel, or all the XXXTD in their ****ty TD channel... and so on.
It might sound stupid and a simple search-by-tag would be enough, but it was just an idea that flew through my mind.

I think that the key to breaking down Battle.net barriers is to remove the Custom Games filter. Why is there a seperate matchmaking system for 'real' games vs. Custom games? Place a filter, as you said, but LET ME USE THE SAME INTERFACE FOR FINDING A GAME!
If I want to auto-join a game, let me use the AT model.
If I want to play my friends, let me use the Custom Game model.
If I want to find a game, use a hybrid of the two.
But in order to get to ALL of these, there should just be one menu!
For ****'s sake, why should I have to go to three different places just to play a game of war3?
Horrible.
