This is not a new trend. Ever since the release of BC, raiding has seemed to be dying slowly. Each progression race has seemed more and more pathetic, and almost all of the talented players left in the game chose to focus on PvP or to go "casual".
While Nihilum probably hasn't quit, and probably will go on to down Kil'Jaeden first despite their lagging behind on the first few bosses, they seem to be the only good guild left around. Back Pre-TBC most of their firsts were just due to the Euro timings which gave them access to nerfed bosses a day earlier than US guilds, and it was usually this day that separated them from the rest. They really aren't all they are made out to be, yet at this point they're clearly the best. It's really sad when that's the state of the game.
Furthermore, WoW is not a PvP game. Shadowbane is a PvP game. WoW IS its PvE, the PvP is too deeply flawed to ever be the main feature of the game. Ask yourselves an honest question: Do you really think most of the millions who bought TBC did it for the spectacular new arena system (irony for those of you too obtuse to get it) or for the opportunity to kill that ****** who said "You are not prepared?" The most fun times I ever had in the Burning Crusade was my bried time in Mount Hyjal and Black Temple when they were still hard. Arena is fun, but in the end the game is structured so that it's PvE that has the actual longevity.
People say Bloodlust is dead? PvE is far more dead, and this is a far worse thing than one battlegroup going through some inactivity. PvP always goes around in circles, since it becomes monotonous very quickly until new FoTMs come and revive interest for short periods of time.
Blizzard needs to do something, quickly.

The difference between the state of PvE and Bloodlust:
PvE dying is a positive thing for the game.

You're really quite stupid aren't you?
World of WarCraft is NOT a PvP game, it should be obvious considering that Blizzard doesn't even seem to have any longterm plan for PvP. WoW is mainly PvE in the end.

Nihilum didn't quit PvE. They were unable to practice killing the first three bosses on the PTR so we can't really expect them to compete with guilds that have. I'm sure they'll be first to down Kil'Jaeden anyhow.

Probably true.
However comparing this to the activity that went on in the first days of Naxx makes one feel pretty skeptical about there being any life left in PvE.

Blizzard should introduce 4v4; it would put some spark back into arena pvp. Some new arena maps would be nice too, as well as something like rated 10v10 arena on a large map with special rules (I don't wanna say rated WSG because that seems really boring).

I'm not sure they'd be able to make a decent new arena. As I remember, Ruins of Lordaeron was just awful at its inception.

EU gets patches a day later then US, so US has a days head start. The C'thun hotfix was an exeption. But yeah you are correct, PvE has vent down the crapper since TBC, wonder if they manage to make it even worse in WotLK.

Major content is simultaneous, meaning US has maintenance while EU has a day of attempting content before maintenance.
Happened for C'thun and Kel'Thuzad.
Trust me, we were top 4 for Kel'Thuzad, I remember pretty clearly

Bigger fixes require patching, ie US gets a head start. Smaller stuff can be fixed with a server side hotfix, one that mostly goes live around the same time world wide. What happened on C'thun was that this particular time was during (or shortly after) US maintenance, so they had a new instance to clear before seing any change while EU had one night left before reset.
I was in a top 10 guild during the KT race, and the only "nerf" I can remember was the respawning issue (that hit DnT harder then N though). He was killed 2 days after EU reset, so 3 days after US reset. So no, instant hotfixing during US downtime was not an issue, it was on C'thun though.

Firstly, the US guilds (DnT, Risen, DV) got the respawn bug earlier and could have ostensibly killed Kel'Thuzad before the bug hit Nihilum. Admittedly, the bug ****** them over too (1% wipe for the lose), but they killed Kel'Thuzad while it was despawned for DnT A SECOND TIME. Also, we got ****** over as our server was down for hardware replacement at that point in time - we couldn't even log into our characters (Deus Vox). We had him to 14% at that point pretty tidily and could have probably got him down if he hadn't run away >.>.

My point, that hotfixes applied during US maintenence resulting in a first only happened once (C'thun), still stands. Risen and DnT apparently managed to spawn KT again since they booth killed him before next reset, if DV did Im not sure but you should know that.
Servers where ****ting all over, and if the first was unfair or not has been discussed to death. I liked your post and agree on most things and just wanted to point out a false statement. I had no intention of enaging in a flamewar rearding who got most ****** over during the end of nax, I have done enought of that and I guess you have aswell.
Stuff like that (different patchdays, downtimes, ****** up auth servers etc) shouldnt be a factor in a good competative PvE game, ever. Guess we can booth agree on that and that the fututre for WoW PvE looks grim.
Doh, wrong reply-button

Ours didn't despawn a second time, we had our server down while those 2 were attempting Kel'Thuzad.
Blizzard thought they should migrate our server's hardware RIGHT THEN, pretty gay in my opinion. But yeah, servers were ****** over. My bitterness has long dissipated, and I don't really care, was just making the point that Nihilum would not have gotten the world first if all things were equal.
However, given that at that point it was commonly held that Horde was inferior to Alliance, all credit to them.
And of course, the future of WoW PvE is pretty much gone.
