Probably one of the most critically acclaimed and technically thorough WoW movies ever created. Tales of the Past III is the pinnacle of WoW movie-making. Anyone even remotely interested in WoW MUST watch this movie.
This is the third in a trilogy. The series has had its faults. At two-ish hours long each, both previous films were long enough that tedium and slowness did creep in at points, and the pace was erratic. Story flow and character dynamics were almost non-existent in the previous 2 films, and its hard to imagine they were made by the same filmmaker who made the masterpiece that is TotP3. But its seems he tested the waters and learned from his mistakes in the first 2 movies and came back with aplomb. You don't have to watch the previous movies to get into TotP3, the story arc hints at the previous 2 movies, but the added mystery only adds to the magic of the story.
The tale is basically told by an old dwarf in an inn somewhere (although its the one in Ironforge). The story has multiple subplots of varying dimensions that come together in the end, like Lord of the Rings. I won't give away too much, but suffice to say it explains the backstory of the Ashbringer and it involves Frostmourne (and its bearer, Arthas), it also involves Jaina Proudmoore, Thrall, Rexxar, Morgraine, a dark Naaru who looks suspiciously like Mu'ru and for a brief cameo by Kil'Jaeden himself. Each character is convincingly voiced and well edited integrated into the movie. It explores the tenuous relationship between the Horde and Alliance, the threat of the scourge and Arthas' plan for the destruction of Azeroth. All elements of the story have been diligently researched and hold as true to the Lore as possible (like the backstory behind the Ashbringer).
All this told beautifully in DVD quality with cinematic sound. Which brings me to another point. The music has been taken from various movies themes, which gives it a real professional feel to it, and is a big part of why the movie feels epic. The movie is heavily stylized in its fight sequence, making it more anime-like, but this was a clever way of showing complex fight sequences with style and within the technical limitations of the WoW model viewer. This is also conformed to the Blizzard universe however because those who've played the Frozen Throne single player campaign, know that the final battle between Illidan and Arthas is portrayed in anime style by Blizzard as well. "Tales of the Past III" is a different story.
In comparison to the previous two films, this is on a whole other level in terms of scale. With constant and well-paced switching between all the subplots, well developed character interactions, an extended and FAR more impressive battle sequence than the last films, and a real emotional core - this is without question some of the best filmmaking in years and makes usage of the term 'epic' laughable when applied to some of the stuff that comes out of Hollywood.
If I HAD to pick something, some of the voice acting could have been better, like the Tauren Druid or the exaggerated accents could've been toned down for some of the Dwarfs in Ironforge. There are also some minor editing issues, but when you realize that this was the effort of one person over the better part of 2 years, releasing a WoW movie that he is going to make no money from, you realize what an awe-inspiring testament it is to the passion the game evokes in players around the world. Petty nitpicks against an otherwise immaculate piece of moviemaking. When things come together so perfectly for a film its astonishing.
There is absolutely no doubt that not only is this the best WoW Machinima of all time, but one of the greatest 'epic' game related movies of all time (yes I'm counting Hollywood movies based on games). A truly cinematic experience that you'll find practically impossible to forget. Do yourself a favour, don't go to the movies this friday and waste your money on some inane, half assed chick flick, instead download this movie and watch it on your Plasma TV. You will NOT regret it.

Yea it was great for its time. Its funny looking at some of the older Machinimas and PvP videos and seeing how much the scene has changed in the last few years. Standards have skyrocketed, nothing short of impeccable and tasteful editing, music and content satisfies the average viewer.
Its observing a condensed version of Hollywood's history in terms of their audience expectations.

You gotta be kidding me... this turned out to be one of the gayest nerdiest things I've ever watched.
It has good editing at best. After that it has bad voice acting, horrible visuals, boring action, bad plot, boring script...
In general. . . sure its the best of the crap warcraft videos out there.
BTW, Blazer is the gayest name and had the gayest lines I've ever heard of in a serious attempt to make a warcraft movie.
summary:
As a Warcraft movie: B
As a movie: F
Even that I would rate this as a movie says something... but not much. And give me a break... the music was ****... stolen **** at that.
All this crap shows is that if someone has no life and some editing experience they too can make a crap movie.

Music wasn't 'stolen', what do you expect him to do, compose his own music in his basement?
Just about every WoW video out there has music from, songs and films to enhance the experience. As long as its used for non-commercial purposes, there is nothing wrong with doing so.
Did you even watch the entire thing? Or did you just see the first 5 minutes and scrub through to the end?

As a film it was a melodramatic, derivative cut-and-paste job from stuff like LOTR, the warcraft universe, and other generic fantasy.
But as a wow machinma on warcraft movies it was pretty neat. I enjoyed watching it, aside from the more cringeworthy scenes and the slow motion heroic sacrifices. Five stars.

I watched the whole thing. The good scenes were few and short. I think if he ended it around 45 minutes when Arthas killed the NE chick it would've been more entertaining. At least thats where things went downhill imo.
To the contrary I was giving my impression of the entirety of the movie, not just the good scenes. And a few good scenes could not make this movie great on their own.
It felt unnecessarily too long and there were just points in the movie that bored me to tears.
In the same movie I felt some areas of the story were rushed and of such poor quality it just brought the whole movie down.
And Blazer was such a... poor character for the size of his role. And again his lines just killed it. And the training killed it. The whole "I'm a human who can create a portal to the emerald dream so I can train you" wreaks of.... Dragon Ball Z... in a bad way.
I believe if it were shorter then it would have been much better. Length certainly does not equal quality.

Fair enough, its a matter of opinion I suppose. But you're the first person I've come across who actually has serious issues with the movie.
Ah well.Â

I can't say I hated it visually. Even though its merely WoW graphics with some touch-ups... its acceptable. I just came to really hate the flow and story after about half way through.
Plus... too many obvious easter eggs really detracted.

I didn't like it much for simillar reasons. The first 3 minutes were great, but after that it slipped pretty bad.

The editing isn't really very good. I take it you don't really follow WoW non-PvP movies much, but movies like Fury and Huntology or something had incredible editing compared to TotP.
The reason the names are so terrible is that Falch let them keep their in game names when he made his first movie (which was shot purely in game I believe).

TotP3 was a terrible, terrible movie. It had no plot twists, inconsistent voice acting, and mediocre editing.
There is, however, no denying the scale it takes to make a movie like that. It is better than a lot of Hollywood films, because 99% of all Hollywood films are pure Jewish garbage.
The guy dumped thousands of hours into the movie with no prospect of reward or anything, and that's really all the good that can be said about it.
Basically this is like a sci-fi channel original movie. Keep your expectations low, and you won't be disappointed.
