Well I have been keeping up with the news lately one big ticket item is Diablo 3. Frankly a friend of mine mentioned he was disgusted a few days ago about the art and started showing me differences between cartoony pictures and realism that blizzard seems to be drifting away from. Even with their limited graphic capabilities the concept art has always remained extremely high quality and it really shows which direction their game is going to take.
Diablo 3 (Examples below) has stumbled into the same problem that the new starcraft has been showing off although Diablo being a much more sinister game is getting huge media attention over this. Fans posted a petition, which when I first added my name was around 2000 nothing too spectacular.
Now it is up over 20,000 signatures and I think there is an extremely good reason for this. I have loved blizzard games since I first went out and bought Orcs and Humans telling everybody it was the greatest game ever made. Then my friends and I hooked up an old school LAN in their house so we could play Diablo together after school. Hellfire (Sierra port? Still confused as to how this happened) was even fun still have them all in a box in the basement. I think I can safely say I have had plenty of Diablo experience and completely agree with the turn in art style, it's jumping away from the series, the quote from Keith Lee Lead producer for Diablo III shows even he is aware of this intentional change.
“One of the things that we considered when we were working on the visuals for ‘Diablo III’ is the fact that color is your friend. We feel that color actually helps to create a lot of highlights in the game so that there is contrast. A great analogy is like in ‘Lord of the Rings’ — not everything is dark. It allows you to see what a creepy dungeon can be like but if everything is dark it doesn’t allow you to have a lot of contrast.” - The rest of his comments can be found in a great article over at http://multiplayerblog.mtv.com/2008/07/02/diablo-iii-art-direction/
The petition has done an excellent job posting requests for changes, why these are made and has added some amazing illustrations to show that blizzard is making happy shiny graphics compared to the old scarred dark and grim show they used to put on. Here are a few of my favorites although more can be seen at the petition linked earlier in the article.

This is a light source reference to show that D3 doesn't have limited lighting which adds to the effect from previous games in the series.
http://i27.tinypic.com/vep6ix.jpg
Some spell effects and terrain changes show a much crisper style of art.
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l318/frostwake/Diablo32.jpg
Original almost looks blurry to try and add a smudgy "But I blared the contrast to hide skin blemishes" concept to their art style.
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l318/frostwake/Diablo31.jpg
This will be my last example and it speaks for itself.
Now it's not just Diablo that's changing its art style we also see Starcraft and obviously WoW sticking towards a brighter less grim lighting effect.

Starcraft 2 concept art (Above)

Original Starcraft game art
I lost the original image I was going to use for a direct comparison but it was of a zealot concept from SC1 and it was incredible how much detail and realism they added to the character. That one looks like a pokemon, Mewtwo doesn't play Starcraft and I don't want to reverse aging to enjoy new game titles. Not to say the new Starcraft wont be excellently made I have good faith in my favorite gaming company to date. However their new style of art is less than impressive in my eyes.

Look how muscular young and vibrant this old chap is, I do say he looks like quite the hero.

[EDIT] About 24 hours from original post the petition has gone up from 20,000 to 28,600 looks like it's on the rise.

I like the new brighter Diablo colors.. I also preferred the original brighter colors in SC2, but they changed that

In the art change examples I linked in the post. (Right above the inserted images) I think the art is amazing on the user side and the bright shiny stuff just doesn't look as sharp. I'm not personally a huge fan of it in Starcraft either I think for new RTS games that are being made blizzard could definitely pump a little more in graphic wise.
Now I'm going to play the games either way because WoW looks like crap and it's pretty fun, and all the old games blizzard has made have awful graphics for current day titles but are still amazing. I can only assume they'll keep this up, but visually I have higher hopes.

Brighter colors on SC aren't as big of a deal as they are in Diablo. I mean, a game where you fight the most revolting and meanest looking of demons and creatures in a kill or be killed savage as it gets world, a game like that just NEEDS the dark, scary, gloomy feel.

I love how so many people seem to like the idea of getting chronic cases of eye strain. I think I'll be fine with the more colorful look of Diablo 3.

It has nothing to do with eye strain. It has to do with keeping the same feel of the past two games. You're fighting against the lord of the underworld himself, the name of the game says it. It's supposed to have a dark, evil look and feel to it.

You make a good case in you blog, but don't criticize the new barbarian, the new dude seems much more like the Vikings Barbarians are associated with.

Oh wow people are retarded. Your basic fix for every screen shot is increase contrast, lower brightness and reduce the color depth. LOL, then you compare SC2 concept art (drawn) to a frigging CG rendering as if it's some kind of proof that SC2 is becoming "cartoony." Look at the SC2 opening cinematic. Is that cartoony? I can't believe you'd complain about the D3 barbarian being older and maybe more out of shape. It's obviously supposed to be the same guy from D2. And the D3 barb from your link looks way more bad ass than the terribly 9 year old 3d rendering of the D2 barb. That **** is like computer graphics straight from a B movie.
As graphics technology gets better you either go for photo realism (LOL EQ2) or you go for more stylized. I'd say D3 was quite stylized to begin with, but comparing the look of a washed out pixelized 9 year old game to a high resolution fully 3d game is retarded.

As stated I was comparing the art style used for concept. Also the concept changes from 1-2 are drastic if you'd like more large plastered screenshots they can be supplied easily.

Check it out guys block shaped barracks! COOL

You have got to see the cartoon addition to graphic style in these, SC1 had plenty of color but it's not a rainbow explosion of blue skittles.

Thank God you don't work for Blizzard's art department. I love everything they have done with art design in SC2 and D3.

At least 20,000 people disagree, but that's the great thing about opinions everybody gets one

Yeah good estimate that there are only going to be 20,000 people that buy Diablo 3, retard. Just because you're all vocal doesn't make you the majority, fascist.

Sorry about that Klynx I forgot I was making claims using words you put in my mouth. I'll have to watch out for that next time.
Where was it again that I posted only 20,000 people will buy Diablo 3 or that their opinion is the majority?
I've included an English lesson as well, thanks Dictionary.com!

You're an idiot. Dictionary.com isn't going to give you any context for the word.
Fascism is a term used to describe authoritarian ideologies or mass movements that are concerned with notions of cultural decline.
Sounds pretty fitting to me, especially considering I used it as a hyperbole to sarcastically refer to your petition.
Called.

Wow, that last Before/After is impressive. They actually had a rainbow. In a Diablo game. ?!

I agree. Part of the coolness of the earlier Diablos was the dark and gloomy feel to it. The name of the game is Diablo, I mean come on. I remember the first time I played Diablo and that first little boss in the dark dungeon or whatever said "Fresh meat". I was more scared then than some of the times I've gotten scared playing resident evil.
The dark, evil, gloomy feel is awesome.

Check out the other blog with pictures from the old Diablo II. It wasn't as dark as you remember, it's rose-tinted-glasses effect. The entire part in hell for example was 99% the color orange. The game was using a similar color idea but less developed and 2D and just....worse.

The way I see it is, according to the story it is 20 years after Tyreal destroys the world stone. So, it WAS a place of peace. Now this new guy comes from space? So imagine it starts out light and stuff and in later acts turns dark?

Also remember all we've seen so far is the inside of the Tristram cathedral and the surrounding region outside that has been part of a somewhat more peacefull time in the 20 years after D2. I imagine the zones you explore further into the game are gonna be plenty dark, bloody, and creepy. As long as we don't have to go through that damn desert again.
Edit: Curse you Tipme.

You might be right, to an extent. But we already saw some footage of a dungeon-looking place, with a savage, patchwork-looking boss at the end. A dungeon is a dungeon and it really didn't feel as freaking spooky as it used to feel.

The 'after' shots are nicer, I must admit. I initially felt that all this uproar was about nothing, but if it's not too late to change I definitely wouldn't mind.
The first shot is most illustrative of how a dungeon should feel like compared to the new game: remember in D1 when everything was so dark, you just didn't know what was going to pop out and maul you? There was a palpable aura of fear to the dungeon crawl in that game, and that's the style the 'after' pic gets
