The spider has gathered 71173 characters and I've switched it to gather arena team data. Its grinding away and has grabbed 25704 (and counting) teams. I'll be doing arena analysis with the team data sometime next week. Now for more breakdowns. Since there are many stats we can track I've decided to do a blog post per class highlighting important stats relevant to that class. Please keep in mind that this is an interim-post while I do the write up for different classes. I did this post to respond to comments on my previous post and also to ensure that I'm still around doing this and haven't vanished!

The Spider

The spider is quite simple. It has a list of battlegroups and knows that there are 3 team sizes: 2,3 and 5. It then starts grabbing the XML for each team and characters in that team from the ladder pages of the team size and battlegroup. When I need guilds and non-arena characters I tell the spider to get guild names and spider guilds and each character in the guild too. The only thing to remember is to keep a 1.5 second (I use 2 seconds) interval between each access.

Now for a quick recap of classes/races/genders.

Recap

Alliance Classes
Paladins dominate the arena teams. DK and Druid have decent representation. Warlocks have the least.

Horde Classes
Paladins again dominate. Surprising since paladins are a relatively new class for Horde. DK is close behind.

Alliance vs Horde Classes

There you have it. Breakdown of classes by faction.

Alliance Races

Horde Races

Alliance Genders

Horde Genders

Males outnumber females for all races, including the Blood Elves. So, the # of BE's must be due to popularity of Paladins, the racials and the *shiny-new-toy* factor. Draenei are the only race where they're pretty much even.

Talents

Warrior Talents

Arms is by far the most popular talent choice.

Paladin Talents

Ret is pretty popular while holy is another close competitor.

Hunter Talents

Survival is the clear winner.

Rogue Talents

Assassination is the most popular talent tree by far.

Priest Talents

Disc outnumber the other two.

Death Knight Talents

Unholy is the most popular tree.

Shaman Talents

Resto rules.

Mage Talents

Very very close. Frost slightly edging out the other two.

Warlock Talents

Affliction and Destruction are the most popular.

Druid Talents

Resto again rules.

Hybrids

As you might have noticed in the charts above that I've not included Hybrid talents (as shown on the armory). This was not intentional. The fact is, there are < 300 characters who have hybrid character spec for each class. Clear data that the high level point talents are definitely very popular (hence, valuable) among characters.

Max Stats

PvE Related Sidenote
Blizzard has nerfed DK tanking abilities since they believed that DK's were ending up as exclusive tanks irrespective of boss abilities. So I had to run some numbers and see who had the highest avoidance. I do understand that the DK abilities end up granting a DK with additional avoidance on-demand (and that these abilities could be chained). I am not challenging Blizzard's data that DK's were nerfed unfairly.
There are 20 characters with avoidance > 75%. 17 warriors and 3 paladins.
The top 3 are warriors (note, some have since changed gear, but I have the cached files and they show the gear they were wearing when the spider grabbed them):
The highest 3 paladins are:
While the highest 3 DK's are:

I'd planned to do a section on glyphs and gems but I messed up some code and imported wrong data. So I'll do those when I do more in-depth look at each class and talents etc. I plan to do Druids and Paladins this week. I have the data, but it takes time to massage the whole thing into a post format which is easy to digest. Meanwhile, the arena import will be ready to go as soon as the Armory lets me download more the team files (Armory was down all weekend). Once I have enough teams to work with, I'll run the report for which team plays well against with team, and more details about talents etc in the 2200+ bracket.

The first was a recap because the spider had gathered more data. Some of the stuff was requested by others. The talent stuff is all new. The stats I posted are new (did other stats previously, except resilience). I'm writing up the Paladin and Druid breakdowns/stats/talents etc right now. So, expect a detailed post about them in the next couple of days. :)

Blood Elves are also the prettiest, most human race of the horde.

How the hell is there an even split between male and female draenei?!  Some people just have no taste.

I'm sure a few people will be interested. Anyways, I'll be doing the arena reports soon and those might be more to your liking.

Love your blog, great work.

You mislabeled a graph Average HK's by Race ... it is actually by class.

I'm more interested in a correlation between Arena ratings and Resil ratings (more so for dps) in the higher levels.

Block is not avoidance. It's a completely different mechanic that is no where near avoidance in effectiveness.

I will re-run the report and update the post tomorrow without block
added into the calculation. I made the mistake by going with the
pre-WotLK crushing blows mechanic. Thanks for reminding me.
