If you managed to play some Team Fortress 2 today you may have heard about "Halo-gate".  No this isn't a reference to that crappy console game that the kiddies go gaga over its about this little halo on the right.  Yes, the good boys and girls of TF2 landed themselves a nice halo as a hat add-on.

Notice I said "good boys and girls".  Those of you who thought it wise to use that nasty little "idle program" out there to try and earn yourself some hats and various other accessories just had their hands slapped by Valve with little warning.  I myself never used it.  I spent some time idle in in-game servers well before the weapon-drops were added but never the third party client.  So now I have a nice little halo as you can above which ironically is my very first hat.

People who choose to use the idle program have had all their "illegally obtained" items (and I use that term loosely) taken from them as a form of just desserts.  Plus they miss out on the halo-hat which was giving to 95% of the TF2 populace.  This has angered the masses and they are out in force on the TF2 official forums *****ing and moaning over a hat that has zero substance within the game as if they were unfairly treated.

Were they?  I don't think they were to be honest.  In the "spirit of the game" clearly idling to give an advantage in random rare drops, while not down on paper as illegal, certainly seems against the whole concept from the get go.  If its supposed to be random doesn't idling go against the point of it?  If anything these people should be pissed at themselves as it was their own actions that brought this on.  The really amusing thing is that a lot of these gamers who idled never even got a hat but lost all sorts of other accessories.

Valve never explicitly came out and said this idling was illegal or against the TOS and this forms the basis of many complaints in regards to this whole issue.  The weapons are easy enough to get however and this punishment really adds up to a whole lot of nothing if you lost some of your items.

I will give the protesters some credit though, they are going about it in some creative ways.  First up is the "Healers Against Halos!" Steam group who are a bunch of healers who are refusing to heal players with halos.  With under 700 members there is a good chance you will never run in to them but be warned.  That is how you protest people, screw e-petitions.

And if you are really feeling slighted you can always bust out this custom skin to remind yourself how "f--- you Valve" you really are...

Cheaters never win?

That does nothing in regards to getting the "rare hats" that everyone seems to want.

Won't lie, as much as I play Demoman I would love the Afro but I wasn't about to go idle-crazy to try and get it.

I'm not gonna lie, I used the stupid idle bot. Been using it for roughly.. 2 and half weeks? Found 2 hats along the way. Didn't even know about this until you posted it~ Haha, it's not really a big deal, though.

I'm glad to have contributed to everyone else getting a hat!

I never idled for hats, but it was more of a case of couldn't care less about them.

Still, random was a dumb way to award hats in the first place and they really need to change this somehow.

I sniped the same cloaked spy that was wearing one of the halos around 5 times one round before he accused me of cheating. Funny enough you can see the floating halo when they're cloaked, it makes headshots really easy lol.  I'm not sure if you can see it all of the time or not.  It was good for a laugh though when I told him what was going on.

One thing to note is that the Valve forum moderators have consistently stated that the idler is an exploit before this. I agree the message could have used more exposure as I said over on Hellforge.

That very well may be the case but forum moderators are hardly the "voice" people should have to seek out.

That have a damn blog right there, that they used today, why not post it there before hand...

Definitely needed more exposure.

Was worth every second of it.

I didn't get any hats through the idling anyways, and I play sniper mainly and the sniper unlocks are for the most part, terrible.

lol @ giving people halos though

look, for a moment, just to give you perspective, think of them as completists rather than cheaters.

completists get upset cause there's no reliable way to farm hats. they then find a way to get hats without having to play for five years in their normal pattern. valve then punishes them by giving everyone else something the completists never can get, adding insult to injury.

i don't condone with cheating, and i think it's a bit extreme to use **** like idling. you're supposed to get stuff by playing the game. however, valve made a bad decision by allowing hats to be this rare when they knew people would be upset with it, and there's absolutely no reason for them to be this rare. valve was basically asking for **** like this to happen, and now that it has happened, they throw more **** on the completists.

what valve is doing is nothing short of e-bullying. they know that because there's so few completists, the majority of people won't care, and since they're already paid, there's no money to be lost (except for tf3 - l o l).

i had no hat previously, and i'm too bad to get the majority of the achievements, so i don't care about the issue at hand, but this is an ass way to solve a problem and valve should think twice before pulling these kinds of stuns off again.
