Forgive the lolcats, as they are misleading. I did not mean to say that SE absolutely did know about it.

It is remarkably difficult to open a discussion about the very subjective subject (heh) that is cheating and exploiting, so I decided that I would utilize the greatest essay introduction ever. If you are enrolled in university at the moment and you ever write an essay, I’d suggest you take the following thesis, change the words to fit your needs, and thusly reap the rewards of creating pure, undistilled academia. No need to thank me. Donations, however...
Ahem. To continue:
For millions (maybe billions) of years, man has pondered the meaning of cheating. But what is cheating? Webster’s dictionary defines cheating as “to practice fraud or trickery†and “to violate rules dishonestlyâ€. An online dictionary further defines cheating as “an annual European species of brome grass widely naturalized in temperate regionsâ€. Taking the above definitions, therefore, we may define cheating as a method of dishonestly violating rules to practice fraud or trickery involving a European species of grass.
Awesome.
European grass aside, this article was written mostly out of wedlock; born from the marriage of Square Enix’s recent bannings and my awkward desire to be ‘hip’ and ‘with it’ in my writing. For those who don’t know, on January 22nd, 2009, SE finally decided to bring divine punishment down upon hundreds of FFXI players who had exploited an in-game glitch to get 3x the loot in specific zones. While this wouldn’t have been so bad if all of the items in question were RA/EX (bind on pickup), a number of the dupable items could be sold (and were) for extravagant amounts of gil, mostly due to their rarity. Thus, not only did this duping trick allow players to get excessive amounts of RA/EX gear quicker than SE intended, but they profited an incredible amount in the process.........

FFXI was lots of fun. Many people who hated the game never got over the leveling hump. The end game PvE aspect of FFXI is superior to World of Warcraft's, Dynamis-Jueno, San d'Oria raids were the sh*t. I feel sorry for all the people who got perma banned, the FFXI GM's are pure crap though. I use to farm Kraken Clubs all the time and never got caught. >

Seriously? I played in top HNM LS' on the top NA server for about a year and i found pve super super boring and mind numbingly easy. Strategies weren't particularly imaginative for killing bosses, and in general every fight tended to feel very slow paced and predictable. Dynamis (of which i believe i completed every single one, including xarc which was the hardest at the time in the game iirc) was a super easy mass zerg as long as you had a decent leader who knew the map reasonably well.
The system of public timed spawns was fun a times, and the story mode parts were always very cool (i completed the one before the xpac, never got all the way through the first or second xpac one, cant remember which).
Making money in the game was pretty screwed. You made a bunch of money so you could level a craft, so you could make an absurd amount of money. A close friend and i leveled crafts together, i believe i ended up doing LW and helped him fund his BS to max level. We ended up with absolutely absurd amounts of gil, and a while after I quit, he had just about the best gear in the game minus a couple ra/ex pieces from dynamis.
Due to all the above, I found high end pve for the most part super boring. Leveling in a good group was often the most fun part of the whole process. That and staying up till 5am farming some **** NM worm so my friend could get some rare crafting ingredient to level BS.

Have to agree with you there, 1min 15sec Bahamut v.2 zerg was our LS best.
I left to play WoW a little after finishing the Chains of Promathia missions. The story, combat, community felt better in FFXI than other MMO's that I've played. It's such a shame people who quit early on never got to expeience this game the way that I have. Hopefully they will learn from their mistakes when Square create the next mmo. Farming beehive chips for a week straight because I could not afford new leveling gear when I first started out was not fun.
I still say WoW PvE is child's play compared to FFXI.
PvP is horrible in this game, it was too slow. Bards/Nin/RDM/DRK and Dancers/Nin are too imba. lol

FFXI's entire endgame revolves around cheating. Use a bot to claim for you, and use a windower script to tank for you. As a former player, I'm pretty pleased that they perma-banned for an exploit they were actually able to track.. because they don't stay on top of much.
FFXI was a great game in its hayday, much more hardcore an endgame then WoW and that's what I loved about it. But it's time is long since over.

I agree, FFXI is not the game it used to be. I didn't dabble much with end game, I just did some Dynamis every now and then and focused on missions as much as I could (not much, being European and all).
Leveling was what I enjoyed the most (after missions, of course), which sounds really funny to WoW players because leveling in WoW absolutely sucks donkey balls. It's fast but it's so terrible you'd rather skip it alltogether. Exping in a group that not only operated like a well oiled machine but also had some awesome people to chat with was an experience unrivaled by anything in WoW. Even raiding BWL, which I think was the best PVE WoW could ever offer (I quit before Naxx and returned in TBC), wasn't as consistently enjoyable.
Alas, it would not last. When ToAU was released the game had already started to deteriorate and that was the killing blow. Party play was dumbed down into TP spam so even retarded monkeys with crippled arms could play and a lot of classes had to re-evaluate their roles (or lack thereof).
Oh well, one can only hope SE has leared something from their mistakes and their next MMO can feature the same kick ass cinematic story experience that no other MMORGPG to date has offered, without all the sucky baggage that came with it, of course.

Why do bad internet "writers" spam comma splices and word of the day words?
