The Hunter Problem

So here we are at the end of S3. Things haven't changed much for hunters, there are still some breakout stars that see success, but most generally lag behind in competitive arenas and the TR.

Why is this? Power isn't a problem when talking about hunters, anybody can tell you that if you're standing within LoS of a hunter you will eat some massive damage. The problem with hunters lies in the mechanics. Hunters are like confused teenagers who don't know if they want to grow up being a boy or a girl. We are classified as a physical dps class, but with mana?

While we benefit very little from being a physical/caster hybrid we have somehow managed to grab onto the major weaknesses of both. Our DPS is dictated by our mana pool. Drain a hunter and he is reduced to viper and steady shots. Being a physical dps class we have very little mitigation when it comes to magic related damage.(This of course, does not apply to rogues.) With our little to none built in escape mechanics we are very easily locked down. Some may argue frosttrapsdeterrencepillarslolnoob, but really; deterrence is on a 5 minute cooldown, pillars work both ways, and frost traps while being effective most of the time are rendered obsolete if the pursuer has BoF, ShS, or if the hunter is rooted or slowed.

But all of this has been discussed to death with much flaming and nerdraging. Let us move onto possible fixes and solutions shall we?

Solutions

These are some ideas I'm hoping to see in WotLK

Smart Trap: Mark an enemy which causes the trap to only activate when the marked target triggers it. Possibly 1 minute cooldown?

Smart Trap solves many problems hunters have with trapping in both PvE and PvP encounters. We could also add in some negating spell resistance bit to help counter the whole spell-hit thing. Traps are our main source of CC and are on a 30 second cooldown. I think being able to land one every minute or so is fair enough.

More Aspects: I feel like I'm being bludgeoned into using Hawk and Viper. Monkey is nice but punishable by warriors. Both cheetah and pack require some ridiculous amounts of timing to pull off, and with the gcd on them its really unreasonable to try. I'm not even going into Beast and Wild. Aspects that have more utility to certain situations would make switching worth something and would add more buttons to click. Obviously a plus.

Smarter Traps: Snake trap. Explosive trap. Immolation trap. While Snake Trap's viability can be argued the fire traps serve nothing but some miniscule aoe damage and a weak dot on a 30 second cd. What I'm hoping for in WotLK are for traps that make the hunter have to choose between in certain situations. A good one imo would be the Stasis Trap. It's got it's roots in WC3 and an AOE stun for like 6 seconds wouldn't be bad when you need to go for a kill.

Trainable Skills: Seriously. Either make Scatter Shot, Deterrence or Aimed shot trainable. It's getting ridiculous when you give rogues clos(yes it was a ****ty 41 talent) and mages ice block(yes they needed the survivability) but you won't even give the only class with a CC on a 30s cd a scatter shot. Or maybe increase a hunters survivability with deterrence?

That's all I really have to say now. Sorry the post was a bit long :)

Good post. Heres what I believe would fix hunters without making them overpowered.

The mechanics like you mentioned are completely flawed, having to stack agility as a mana user while gaining very little benefit from int doesn't make sense. regardless, i'll deal with it because our damage is good when we have mana.

1. Offensive trapping by one of two ways. Trainable scatter shot (possibly overpowered). or simply remove the arming time on traps. If the arming time was removed, we would still need to run to the target in order to CC (which is essentially a cast time). With all the ways traps can be countered or dispelled, I believe that removing the arming time would be balanced fix without making scatter trainable.

2. one escape or defensive ability. we need some sort of iceblock, evasion, vanish, or intervene. Preferably an escape ability as our damage is terrible in pure melee. a defensive ability would be nice but would only delay the inevitable, like deterrence.

3. Aspects should be like stances. The reason why most hunters don't generally "juggle" aspects a lot is because mana is so extremely important that its better used for an arcane shot, rather than switching to aspect of the wild when a shaman is bolting us. Also, since aspects trigger the GCD, we dont always have time to switch when damage is more important. Remove the mana cost, and the GCD trigger.

Give hunters evasion, sprint, vanish, blind, and a teleport. Then add a talent halfway down the tree that resets all those. oh yeah, and let us do damage while moving, and give us a silence shot that snares with no cooldown called deadly throw. also give us mana that regens insanely fast. be sure to add an ability that locks spellcasting for 5 seconds with a 10 second cooldown. **** it what am I saying, just delete the hunter class and make a new one called the "Rouge"

If I ever arena these days I never try to land a trap without a scatter shot cover. And even then it's iffy with a partner trying to eat it :(. The problem with instant trapping(and armed trapping) are that lag plays a factor in landing it. And sometimes your scatter shot can just make him run the **** away from the trap. But that usually never happens

And counterattack is a nice idea for a def/escape ability, except I think it should come up everytime you get critically struck by melee but the skill would have a 20s cd.

I guess Blizzard was just trying to differentiate stances/auras/forms with other things. And didn't think it through.

yeah the arming time on traps makes offensive trapping too unreliable without scatter (even with scatter sometimes).

A reactive ability like counterattack was definitely a good IDEA, but they did it wrong. 5 second root doesn't do anything when we are slowed. It takes 5 seconds just to move out of melee range. It needs to give us a movement speed increase, or some sort of snare reduction.

With all the pushback talents/spells in WotLK you think they might give us a counterattack that pushes someone back and then roots them?

but then again we might get something amazing like BEAR TRAP

I cant read half a page of text because my attention span only allows me to to post 15 random capital letters.  If only I could get this brain cell to work, i'm sure that a simple task of READING could be accomplished.

If you don't have at least a 3.6k rated arena team as hunter druid by now, then give the **** up.

There are no Hunter problems. You are the class with the most gadgets and **** to do out of all of them. I think a large dose of L2play None, is in order.

The problem with hunters is
1. The lack of competitive 5v5 with there "traditionally" best comp. CLC w/e u want to call it.
2. In 3's you ALMOST basically need to play with a lock and a druid, but why would a lock and a druid play with a hunter if they can play with a warrior or a OP rogue?
3. In 2v2 there only choice to play at a high level would be hunter/druid which would mean your a ****** and you should kill yourself.
