I was scared that Auto-Follow would ruin this game, but it is nothing like Guild Wars Auto-Follow, it is completely non-invasive on your movement. When you either Right Click an enemy(to actvate Auto-Attack) or use an ability, you will turn on Auto-Follow, but ANY movement at all on your part will completely cancel the auto-follow and it is not jittery/buggy at all, just like you were never auto-following in the first place, which means that controlling your character yourself is always the better solution.
You also gain movement bonuses in Aion, which encourages movement while in combat. Moving forward will put a forward arrow icon below your character which means your attack damage is increased. Strafing left to right will put a left/right arrow icon below your character which means your evasion is increased. Backpedaling(lol) will put a down arrow icon below your character which means your block is increased.
The combat in Aion is fluid, fast paced, and fun even at level 5 on a laggy Chinese server, as a scout(Which at level 10 chooses to become a rogue or a hunter), which is about 30minutes of gameplay. So far, I don't get locked into any of my instant attack animations.(Which is what I thought what happened in Aion, maybe with more powerful skills to balance them?) I also don't have access to any advanced skills that chain off of other abilities.
Example of combat at level 5:
-Start fight on an enemy by using Swift Edge(A normal damaging attack like Mortal Strike for Warriors, instant cast 7second cooldown.)
-Use my Focused Evasion(100% chance to dodge 1 attack within 5seconds, instant cast 30second cooldown.)
-My Counterslash icon pops up on my screen showing that it can be chained off of my dodge.(After evading an attack, you can use this ability to do a good amount of damage and it stuns the enemy for a few seconds, instant cast 10 second cooldown.)
-While the enemy is stunned from Counterslash, run behind the enemy and use Surprise Attack(Backstab ability, instant cast 16second cooldown.)
Questing is very easy and not frustrating since they have a built in Carbonite/QuestHelper, with hyperlinks in the quest text where you can click to locate what you are looking for on the mini-map/map.
My major gripe with the game so far is that it looks like you won't be able to turn the camera to look behind you while running(holding left click then pan camera.).EDIT: You can pan the Camera behind you when moving, instead of holding left click, you hold the scroll wheel.
I may record and post up some combat/PvP videos later this week. For anyone interested in finding out more information about Aion, this 23minute presentation basically tells you everything you need to know about Aion:

I know lot of people dislike you for your harsh criticism on WAR. But I've agreed with most of what you had stated about WAR. You review game for what it is and I appreciate that(same reason why I suggested Kyle P. to harshly criticize DF).
The camera thing does concern me a little.. I like to have maximum freedom... things like.. if you can see it, you should be able to explore it. That matters a lot to me(I still remember how visually stunning Guild Wars was in beta.. but I could never explore those areas.. the invisible walls!!)
How is leveling in general? Gearing? Do you find it to be massively time consuming? Do you find the game to have great depth in terms of developing skill(can one fight 1 vs. many if they're good?). Max level? End game? What is the focus of this game? PvP or PvE? Mix of both? Raids?
The thing that bothers me the most is that it's made by NC Soft. And I know from experience(+10 years of knowing this company) that their content is very limiting. Call it bad design..lack of talent or simply a bad execution... just.. bleh..hopefully this will be different.
Oh and.. things being too fancy and all.. is the system requirement insane? Or is it properly optimized so you can run this game without choking? Sorry for all the questions, hopefully you can answer them all.

My blog entry was made with about only 1hour of gameplay, I will be able to post about more things as I play more of the game, I am only level 7 so far, which has been quite enjoyable leveling to.
I am pretty sure that Aion's main focus is World PvP in a zone called the Abyss, which you can find a lot more about in the video I linked.
here are system requirements:
Pentium 4 2.8GHz, AMD Athlon 2800
1 GB RAM
GeForce 6600, Radeon X1550
Hard Drive 30GB
DirectX 9.0c(2008,6)
Recommended:
Pentium Dual Core, AMD Athlon 64 X2
2 GB RAM
GeForce 7600, Radeon X2600
Hard Drive 30GB
DirectX 9.0c(2008,6)
The game runs really smooth for me so far, much better than I ran AoC, and the game is also very alt-tab friendly.

I actually tend to agree with jflanded whenever he criticizes other games even though I think his idea of a dream MMO is quite different from mine.
I had pretty much dismissed Aion since I found out about it's intrusive control mechanics like the above mentioned Auto-Follow (and in a fast paced game I can't live without free camera) and some other stuff that has been blogged about it. I guess we'll see how it pans out, though.

You won't even notice Aion has Auto-Follow, because if you actively move your character while in combat(Which you will definitely want to for many reasons like you do in WoW.) and your enemy runs away from you, you won't be auto-following them(because your movement cancels out Auto-Follow, but you won't see that with your character) unless after they run away you right click them or use an ability and don't move your character at all by yourself.

Hmm, movement bonuses actually makes it sound fairly interresting... I've kept an eye on aion for a while and honestly I might even had considered playing it if it were free or GW type sub (one time payment +expansions).
But other than that I'd rather just stay wow or roll eq2 or aoc or wait for the old republic (or all of the above)~

I can't for the life of me find a link for this beta. Can you provide one?

This is a Chinese Open Beta.
Here are instructions on how to get in: http://sayasun502.spaces.live.com/blog/cns!DF5D8DC071D53FEC!166.entry
attaching a fake Chinese ID to the account is a pain in the ass and if it is an ID that is under 18 years old, you only get like 4 hours playtime a day or something like that because of Chinese Law.
You then need to download this: http://www.mediafire.com/?sharekey=2b4068ef24085b6e90a82c7bb0fad7ade04e75f6e8ebb871 which will translate everything in game from Chinese to English.

I can't believe I forgot the most impression thing.
10 hitboxes.
Yes you heard me 10 hitboxes with different damage and gear deteriation depending on where you strike an oponent.
They are also putting in debuffs. For example stabbing someone in the leg multiple times will hinder their movement, in the hand they will drop their weapon.
Time to play the big boy games.

"Dark & Gritty Realism" I dunno but this is usually a turn-off for me, I sort of associate that with stale-animations and clunkyness, sort of like warhammer.

Exactly the same impression as AoC gave me. Who the **** gave those guys the funds after reading the design docs.... (regarding Mortal).

You can also turn off auto-follow, I am too playing the chinese open beta and I love the way abilities work (you will love dash-attack at lvl 10).

Jfl, did you try holding down the scroll wheel and turning the camera? It was necessary in some games that use the same engine in order to maintain the backwards angle while running forwards. The normal click and pan would reset to the running view.
I've had my eye on Aion for quite some time now, hopefully it delivers a good amount of up-front gameplay that will give them time to iron things out, unlike so many other recently released MMO titles that can't get off the ground due to "standard" mmo opening blues, but raped by the hulking juggernaut waiting in the wings. People just end up going back to WoW before things become steady and the games tend to fold.
I believe it's currently the top game in Korea retail, or right under Maple Story. Hopefully all this lag time between US and Korean release dates means they are changing the style of play some from Cafe-friendly mindless grinding to easier levelling. Eastern play culture is so different, one of NCSoft's biggest early mistakes in things like Lineage 2 was not considering that most US players are interested in the RPG aspect or ONLY playing the game and focusing all their attention on it. In large portions of the Eastern market most people play in cafes and want games you can grind without paying real attention to, which also means your best friend in any Korean port is the Nostromo.

I generally tend to agree with jfl on most MMO topics.
Aion looks really promising. As long as they don't go the lineage 2 route and make levelling a complete slut.
