There was just an international exhibition between (in my opinion) the four best players at their characters in the world. Daigo was obviously more consistent than Poongko, but watch his matches and see the horrible aggro pressure he brings. On top of that, the US came close to taking it.
And of course, the biggest stages of them all in Fighting Games are coming up- Evolution (US, open) and Super Battle Opera (japan, invite only) which means.. those tournies are going to be really interesting this year.
On top of that, MLG is considering picking up SFIV for the pro circuit, or at least seems to be judging by their pretty avid support of the game at Meadowlands. Now there is a lot of back and forth on whether or not this is a good thing- but I see it as a way to generate hype, which can only be good. It can bring production values and television broadcast to the general neckbeard shakycam aspect of Street Fighter tournies.. (only two that don't have that problem are Evo.. which is like a 30 dollar per disc dvd or SBO.. which is also expensive, especially so out of Japan.)
On less of an e-sport note and more of general SFIV note, Championship Mode came out today.. seems pretty cool now, Netcode seems better but that could just be my opening matches since the school kiddies aren't home right now.
However, I just got a 5 bar connection Xbox Live. The first one I've even seen.
Get hype, yo.

I don't know if I misread you, but Justin Wong took the title. His match with Daigo was just an exhibition.
I was really impressed by how Justin dealt with Iyo's Dhalsim. Once Justin got in Iyo couldn't do anything about it.
Poongko was really interesting to watch. Just straight up in-your-face rushdown with zero D.
Daigo was beast as always. Did you see him DP damn near all of Justin's low dive kicks? Physic as a mofo.

I think you're a little late bro. Justin took the US nationals more than a month ago. What was played recently was the final of the Gamestop tournament, which Justin won, and the SFIV world championship, which he won as well. He played against the Korean (Poongko) and Japanese (Iyo) champs. His match with Daigo was just an exhibition.

uhh no, Justin won the US tourney and then played the japanese/korean champs in the same night.

I asked this question in another blog but didn't get a real answer: If you're a REALLY casual fighting game fan, is this game worth buying for the online mode? Or is it like being a casual starcraft player where you just get wrecked 95%+ of the time?
The game looks way fun, and if I get it I'll want to drop the money on one of the arcade sticks, but I don't want to do that if there's not a solid amount of mediocreish players for me to fight against, because I'll probably be pretty bad.

there is a rating system in online play, like you get 15 pts in wow so you can bestuck int he 1500s if you are bad.

There are a lot of mediocre players online. If you put in a little effort you'll be beating most of the scrubs in no time.
The learning curve isn't very steep either. Plus since you're playing online you'll be sticking to the basics since the advanced stuff isn't really viable.

I'd recommend if it if you're willing to learn it. I can teach you if you're on the 360 side!
But anyway, yeah. It's definently worth picking up. I'm above average and there are plenty of players that stomp me, and plenty of players for me to stomp.
The new championship mode DLC simulates a tourney and improved the netcode, the whole thing is looking very polished right now.

sweet, thanks guys. i'll pick it up after work maybe. which arcane stick would you recommend? budget doesn't really matter, but if there's only a marginal improvement from like, a $60 stick to a $150 stick, i'd rather go with the cheaper one.
Horis are reliable, get you used to playing stick, have a good comfortable layout etc.

If they have the SE, that'll last you too and you can mod it down the line with real arcade buttons/stick if you decide you like it.
If you haven't had practice on stick, and you want something good for SF and you can't find a stick, pick up a Madkatz fightpad. If there's anything wrong with it (stiff/not working diags) then take it back pronto, but if your Madkatz stick/controller works out of the box and stays working it will serve you well for a while. If you still can't either of thoes options, hit me up on AIM (raeliraedirgue)

I'm curious what modding exactly does for a stick? I'm guessing you can't do anything that will give you short cuts to pull of some moves, such as supers for casual play can you? Maybe it's because i've been playing with a 360 controller, but pulling stuff feels very inconsistent.

also you can buy a custom stick from china for about ~$150us that will have full sanwa [top tier] parts and ****. people's experiences with that are in the tech forum on srk
the madcatz SE might be a better option ($120us shipped on ebay) than one of the horis solely because it's really easy to mod [hurrrr] so you have the flexibility to upgrade in the future

Just to add, it's a preference on sticks as well. Sanwa is the typical and most popular high quality japanese style brand.
That means it's those short ball sticks you see at asian arcades with the light convex tap buttons.
If you're used to the bat sticks at your local arcades, you will not like the hraps or all the joysticks that everyone is recommending.

yes it's totally different from starcraft or quake. You can have fun no
matter what your level is, and the learning curve is less painfull
compare to starcraft.

well, yes some 1frame links can be really annoying, specially online, and even basic stuff like fadc can be hard for a beginner, but unlike quake or starcraft, after a week of training and learning, you don't get wrecked like on starcraft battle net or on quake live where you only fight people who played the game for 15years.

online play may be easier, but remember with sfiv you're fighting against people who have been playing street fighter for 20 or more years. if you ever want to go to tourneys or even have serious online play.. yeah.

It's because 09ers are constantly making stupid posts, not reading stickies, etc etc and basically ****ting up the forum harder than moderators can handle.

The TE stick is fantastic. I actually thought about swapping in my octo-gate but I left the square in. I did however swap out the ball top for a black bat top and I couldn't be happier. Of course when anyone comes over one of the first things they as is, what the hell is that as it sits right by my door on top of my subwoofer.
I proceed to tell them that it is pretty much the best arcade stick I have ever used and that I only had to pay for half of it =p

To be honest, I wouldn't count on MLG picking the game up. Next season they'll most definitely want to pick up Modern Warfare 2 for live events, which makes 4 big games at a live event. Unless they make a big expansion (aka renting out MULTIPLE rooms as big as their current ones, which is a potentially dumb use of money) I wouldn't really hold your breath for SFIV :/ It's a shame fighting games don't get more attention, but it's really not MLG's fault.

You never know, man, you never know. SFIV is picking up steam while Gears and 3 are slowly dying. We'll have to see how the 2010 lineup looks, if they do it right then there'll be much awesome.
BLiTZ Apr 24, 2009 at 4:16 pm

Lol, go to an event if you think H3 is slowly dying. MLG just extended the number of teams for H3 and passes STILL sold out ridiculously fast. There's tons of teams that would go if the cap was raised and there was more space to host a bigger tournament. Gears I don't really follow too much but considering this is Gears 2's FIRST year I don't know how it could really be slowly dying.
It would be nice to see SFIV on the lineup, but you have to realize that there really isn't a strong enough SF MLG community to give it to the push it needs to get on the lineup. If Modern Warfare 2 wasn't coming out at the event of the year, I'd probably say there's a fair chance, honestly.

Also, I think that SF4 is the better of the games, even though I have never played a UFC game. My reasoning is that I can do all of those submissions IRL, but as hard as I try I will never be able to do a hadouken IRL.
