The inevitable conflagrate nerf

For anyone who has been keeping up with the recent trends in arena (I definitely have been), a lot of people should, or at the very least will, start noticing how prevalent RLS has become, and with good reason. As you will see in Zilea part 2 at the bottom of this article, destruction warlocks are no joke. Conflagrate, coupled with a chaos bolt, can easily clear the 14K damage marker, which can be more than enough to take somebody out if they aren't completely topped off. And, with the damage it deals, is anybody at Blizzard HQ planning on toning down conflagrate?

I'm sure most of you are familiar with the type of rotation that destruction warlocks apply in arena, which goes something like the following:

1. Immolate gets casted
2. Blanket silence used by the warlock with immolate mid-cast
3. Immolate lands, Conflagrate follows 1 GCD later.
4. Chaos Bolt

The end result is usually pretty gruesome for the team against the RLS. Factor in fear somewhere in that damage rotation and the outlook of surviving RLS burst as any healer other than priest is pretty grim.

I realize that this is a complete rant, but blanket silence and conflag both drive me equally bananas as I feel they are both abilities that can not be countered and should probably be looked into. My fun recommendation? Remove conflag. My serious recommendation: cut Conflagrate's cooldown from 10 to 5 seconds but also reduce the damage by 50%. This would do a lot for the burst of that comp which, like most of the game right now, is still out of control. If I had to make a realistic projection though, I think Blizzard will pass over all of the major quirks and problems with the game (like burst) because Cataclysm is on the horizon.

I guess my complaints are mostly due to the fact that this patch has so far been the patch of casters/wizardcleave lineups, which spells bad news for most melee cleaves.

All aboard! Train route directly to Blackrock!

Until tonight I was on Kil'Jaeden, my native server since 2005 just playing with old friends and not really taking the game too seriously. After playing with Hoodrych for the last several weeks though, we were both starting to get back into arena and slowly realizing that the talent pool on the server was really limited. After playing with a really badly geared DK as our third in 3v3, it was the last straw. Lots of deadly gear, a 222 dps 2 hander... you get the picture. There's only so much you can take before you start to realize that all of those games where you got somebody to 5-10% hp would have been a kill with the proper gear.

I think it's safe to say that there is only a certain point you can get to before it becomes blatantly obvious that gear is indeed starting to decide matches, even if that disrupts our perception that gear doesn't decide games.

Hoodrych got really tired of having nobody to play with and has been bugging the crap out of me to transfer somewhere. What other server could I go to other than Blackrock? It has like 80% of the top arena population on the server, with the exception of the massive dodgers who want to get rank 1 titles on their ****ty BG and stomp noobs all day (hello Billian). Which really makes me ponder why anybody would sit on a BG where there is no competition and you are stomping people that are 1800 caliber at the 2600+ level. Where is the fun in that? Furthermore, it is pretty lonesome just beating bad teams all day and never even getting recognized because of it.

So with that being said, I am looking forward to logging on to Blackrock tonight and getting tons of insults from all of the people I pissed off in the past.

How laggy is Blackrock during primetime?

The job hunt: a success

Let me preface by saying that I separate WOM from a "real job" because one takes only a few hours to do a week and is not enough to sustain me while the other is one where you go somewhere for 5+ hours a day and are able to (hopefully) pay your rent.

As I chronicled a couple weeks ago, being unemployed is not what you should be if you want to stay happy. I will be the first to say that I blame this economy for me not being able to get a job, even if I was a bum. I had been trying to get a job for several months now simply because I graduate college at the end of the semester with a degree in Political Science and have been just sitting around doing nothing.

After snooping around for a while and sending my resume to a variety of different places (a lot through craigslist), I finally got an interview for a data entry position. Much of this has to do with Hoodrych, who spent a lot of time cleaning up my resume and making it look nice.

When I went in for my job interview, I'm pretty sure what clinched the job for me right out of the gate was the fact that my resume said I typed 65-70 WPM when I ended up typing 113 WPM with 99% accuracy. My employer was shocked and told me the highest she saw was 85 WPM from an applicant. After that it was cruising and I started my $11.50/hr job this past Monday.

Sure, the pay isn't the best and the 8 hours I'm sitting in a cubicle are pretty brutal, but it is keeping me off the streets.

With all of that being said, I could have easily turned into Serennia junior and I am glad I finally have some stable income.

Zilea part 2

As promised, part 2 is here. There is a fairly long 3v3 match that came down to a 2v2, but I left it in there because you can see the absurdity of destruction warlock burst.

I hope everybody enjoys it and please leave your feedback. Next week I plan on putting up part 3.

Forget alpha status, you can actually get a job with a math/engineering degree.

maths/science don't lead you anywhere in decision making terms (unless you end up leading an organisation) but political science/law and so forth often see people end up as leaders.
maths engineering and science may be raw IQ and memory and therefore harder but people mostly choose them because they have a nearly guaranteed job at the end, whereas arts and law are more open ended.

In the grand scheme of things, a liberal arts degree is less desirable to potential employers because it is less useful to people in general. Justify it however you want, no one is going to want a person with a degree in feminism managing an entire company over someone who busted their ass for an engineering degree. There is a reason why so many successful CEOs and businessmen boast technical degrees instead of business/economics degrees; if you are able to complete an engineering degree, chances are you'll eventually be able to do anything people throw at you, be it science or business related. If I had to make a WoW analogy, getting an engineering degree is like being a top pvper while getting a poli sci degree would be tantamount to being a top raid dpser. The latter could be absolutely phenomenal at what he does, but at the end of the day, the pvper could easily match anything the pve'er could do while the pve'er could only dream of being good at pvp.

What some people refuse to realize is that pursuing a math or science degree doesn't just teach you a useful trade skill, it also forces you to develop a rigorous and analytical style of thinking that is entirely absent in the liberal arts. The stuff that most liberal arts courses teach you, by contrast, can easily be picked up by someone who just reads prolifically in his spare time.

Meh,

Poli-Sci gives you quite a few options as to what you can do if you are willing to work, and arguably there are far more poli-sci majors sitting int he 99.9th percentile than there are math/science people.

Poli-sci -> Law (practical) or LLM/SJD(research/analysis) tends provide enterprising socially capable people with an in towords interacting with some of the more important people in the world. Provided you bust your ass for the LSAT and get into a good law school, and are somewhat intelligent/competative you will easily clear 200k starting out, and have somewhat rapid paths towords way better money/status  depending on how ambitious and capable you are.

Just because a good player chooses to do pve, doesn't mean he's gonna be bad at pvp. (but srsly lol pve'ers, it's boring). The difference in this analogy is that engineering may be more difficult technically, but it's not practical in the wide world of social interaction and economical/political decision making. And it's more boring (to me). Someone like Zilea doing a political science degree, he's obviously smart enough to do engineering so you can't say that he's a "pve'er" IRL, he probably just chose to do something more enjoyable to him. In wow though, pvp IS more fun than pve 99.9% of the time.

Arguing about what kinds of degrees are better are like arguing about the best kind of *****s to have shoved up your ass. You're paying an outdated institution ridiculous amounts of money to give you a piece of paper saying that you have learned things you could easily learn for FREE at your local public library.

Am I going to college? Yes. Do I think I should have to to be able to function in society? No.

It just makes me sick to see the way you people talk about this ****. A degree doesn't define you as a person. You are not your ******* school major.

Engineers always end up in a managerial/leadership position in one way or another, why? Because we have problem solving skills, you don't get problem solving skills from referencing some other jackass on your geography paper. A good base of math, sciences, and specified engineering courses make it the obvious choice over any other undergraduate degree.

All but the very top % of Engineers end up being slaves in cubicles working for the few truly gifted Engineers. The problem is you tools that choose your major for it's status rather than love of the subject (not that undergrad matters at all in the first place). On the plus side, the really talented engineers will need you to do their ***** work for them when you graduate.

Biggest load of rubbish I've ever read. Are you suggesting that the choice in your undergraduate degree doesn't matter when it comes to a company hiring you? Of course you're going to be doing ***** work for senior engineers when you start out.

I'm suggesting that if you are one of the tools who signs up for engineering for the entry level pay stats and status then you need to get over yourself and prepare to be a glorified calculator for the rest of your life. Engineers who go on to do useful things enjoy their field enough that they don't need to run around justifying their decision and downplaying other fields to comfort themselves. As Undertow said a few comments up

A degree doesn't define you as a person. You are not your ******* school major.

11.50 a hour?! Is that good for your area? I mean you have a degree, and type over 100 wpm, I would think you could get a general secretary job that pays at least 18. My retarded brother got more than that to start as a ******* junk yard night watch. He has no credentials or anything, and hes a simpleton so the interview could not have gone well.

He doesn't have a degree yet and he most likely has no to very little job experience. Getting an $18/h job is pretty unrealistic unless he has serious connections.

Ok blog. Nothing great, nothing bad. I'm kinda enjoying the less drama-whoring and ****-talking Zilea. While you probably still do it in game, it's nice not to see it splattered all over WoM like you used to.

As far as the video, just my opinion, it's really boring. I mean it's probably helpful to other holy/proly paladins, but the lack of editing and bad music selection just bores me. I can only take so much FoL spamming. I know you don't want to put a lot of time into the videos, and now that you have a job (grats) you probably don't have a lot of free time, but some nice editing and better music can do wonders.

No one watching these mini videos should care about the editing and if the music annoys you, then you can just mute it and play your own garbage. If they're boring then don't watch them. Yes, it really is that simple. I really wish I could communicate to you how easy it is to his music and play your own, or to not watch the video in the first place.

The videos are a nice addition to his already interesting blogs.
