Until about a month ago, I was a mod king, utilizing mods like Spellalerter, Gladius, SCT, etc. Even minor mods like Bartender and Xperl were being used by me in order to maximize my gameplay... or so I thought.

It's obviously been a long time since the taking of this screenshot, but notice Spellalerter, bartender, Xperl... non-hotkeyed abilities...
Nonetheless, the times of being a mod watcher have ended. And I must say that the difference is night and day.

I will admit that going from all of those mods to 0 mods (actually, I'm cheating, I still use OmniCC and Itemrack) was really rocky and difficult for the first 70-100 arena matches. The biggest issue for me was initially the fact that buffs do not show on your party frames and that debuffs displayed are capped at 4. Who the hell at Blizzard HQ designed it this way? Why not just show all the debuffs? How about at least an OPTION to show all debuffs?
Other beefs with default UI: the in-game proximo is not unlockable, can't scale the size of the in-game scrolling combat text, lack of a timer over your abilities (like OmniCC), the list goes on.
The Disadvantages of Learning the Ways of Default UI
As a Paladin, the single most annoying thing about playing in arena with no mods when you know everyone else is using mods: your Divine Plea will never last more than 1 tick against any team with a priest/shaman on maps like Ring of Valor.
I can't count the number of times I would pop Divine Plea only to have it almost immediately dispelled on that map. And, on a few occasions on the other maps, I learned the hard way that popping Divine Plea 3 yards away from a pillar, even if you are about to run behind it, is not good enough to protect your Divine Plea against teams with Spellalerter/Xperl (Xperl will display buffs on the /focus frame and Spellalerter will tell you immediately when someone uses Divine Plea).
In the bigger scheme of things, though, mods are a serious crutch. I personally never thought so until I started adjusting without said mods. I started becoming more aware of things whereas before I could gaze at the middle of my screen to tell me when a druid was cycloning, a priest was mana burning, etc. If you play with 300 mods, have your frames moved around, buffs and debuffs placed in strange positions, you are just hurting yourself. Sure, you will be completely accustomed to them and play well, but you will slowly become more oblivious to the game and become more attached to relying on your mods to keep you alert.
In the past few weeks I've been watching a lot of streams on Xfire and, surprisingly, there are an awful lot of people that play with few (if any) mods. And many people use smaller mods like Gladius and OmniCC, which is a lot less significant than something like Spellalerter.
To those that do use a ridiculous amount of mods, it's ok to use them, but know that the skill cap is much lower for you because of how those mods are assisting you.

Your first UI is absolutely disgusting. The default UI is immensely better only because it's not a cluttered sack of ****.

I swear by bartender, but mostly i agree.
Seriously though Zilea, why do you have auto attack still bound to 1?

He doesn't click sac, i think he just has 2 on his bar. He probably doesn't play with warlocks either, so why waste a bind?
Come on, not binding rez doesn't really matter

It's easy to have a clean UI but still have a lot of mods, you just fail at organizing it.

"It's obviously been a long time since the taking of this screenshot"
It's probably safe to assume it's a lot better in arena and that it's been improved upon?

first off the first SS is organized like ****, + nice comparison showing raid frames vs not showing raid frames. Obviusly any sane person wouldn't place the raid frames like you did in SS1, but then again going to a raid and not showing any as a healer would be 50 times as retarded.
But back to the core of the discussion. There are 2 kinds of mods, crutch mods such as spellalert etc. that will help you see things that you might not have, then there's bar mods and party frame mods, which really just improve on blizzards inherent ****ty design. I admit i used to use a few crutch mods but this was before the times of turneys really (and now i dont play) and really it helped you stay competetive, but i'd be just as glad if none could have used them. however bar mods and party frame mods were sorta a must for me. Not that i wanted to move everything to the center which is for retards only tbh as it clutters actual screen usage and if you want to target ppl on the screen having your own health bar block them is totally retarded. However that beeing said still lots to improve upon

Then why did he make this blog directly comparing the 2 screenshots (with only ONE example for each side) and using it as an argument against using lots of mods?
I guess if you don't have the cognitive capacity to organize your UI you should stick with the Default.

It's funny you'd make this blog.
I had to format my comp last night and reinstalled WoW today. I decided to play with zero mods for now. Did about 50 arena games, and yes, it is quite awkward to get used to. Main things I was used to were x-perl, and you're absolutely right, the debuff tracking from blizz's default is ******* horrible.
My real gripe is that where I have spells on my bars in certain places, there's a blank box, instead of how it is on yours where there's just nothing. I can't get this to go away no matter what I do in the interface options.

Explain the joke, Nennx, won't you? I'm positive you have no clue what it's about.

Okay since you don't really understand the joke you're using I'll help you out.
I have a short blog post from a year and a half ago where I wrote about how happy I was for having gone 28-0 with a new partner. That's it. The joke was not that it wasn't very impressive (in fact very few people ever get to do that), but because people were kidding about how I was bragging. It was a mimicry of me, not an insult to having a 28-win streak.
Get it now? If you don't then idk swallow a gunbarrel or something.

X-Perl is a ******* aesthetic abomination. So is the default minimap, oversized default texture buttons, default unitframes (what the **** were you doing with your raid frames, it looks like you literally took 15 seconds and moved them to merely not overlap). Also, nice bagbar and menubar D:

Horrible comparison from your pictures.
First of all, your first image is in a RAID situation, bolded, caps, and italicized for effect.
Have a full party and pull out everyone's names on a default UI, it's not going to look any different.
Secondly, you have your combat window on your first pic, whereas in your second you don't have it out. I'm assuming not even you, other than sitting idle in ironforge, have it hidden like that in actual combat/raid situations.
Obviously as for the rest, you have enemies targetted and assists/focus targets in the first pic which you would still have on the second pic were you not just sitting in ironforge doing nothing.

why bother playing without convenience mods like xperl that improve upon a poor default ui unless you are trying to play professionally, its not skill cap that's the problem its people convincing themselves less is more when quite obviously playing without mods are just preparing for a lan environment or trying to be better than those "clutching" on mods
if tournaments allowed certain mods like wsvg used to allow rupture ui i would think its for the best overall, but archaic rulesets still prevail, its also probably easier because its less time for tournament organizers not having to worry about people customizing ****
i remember someone made a blog crying about how making a built in arena frame was the end of world of warcraft, was overly melodramatic and entirely wrong
