I think the main problem in this comparison is that it's unfair to the samurai to stipulate equal skill.  I think the knight's equipment might have been more practical overall, but the samurai was probably much more skilled on average due to their culture.  I also bet the samurai were better at disarming, which is a pretty big edge given they both had great armor.  If you were to randomly draw one of each from their entire respective populations, I think the chance of the samurai winning would be greater than 50%.

If the contestants could choose their weapons, I'm pretty sure a knight could batter down a samurai using a bludgeoning weapon. Mace + shield would probably be devastating. Catch the elbow on their sword arm with your mace and you'd have the fight won, I think. The whole while having a shield to cover your side. Bonus points if it's pine and catches the samurai's blade more often than not.As far as bows go... I'm not entirely sure on this, but wouldn't an European bow outrange/outpower a Japanese bow? I thought the japs used primarily those little recurved horsebows, which have a much shorter range than longbows. Crossbows beat both hands down in range, power and accuracy, but they take a lot longer to reload.

Zezo, I think you're confusing the Japanese with the Mongolians. As far as I know the Japanese used some kind of longbows too.

Samurai armor was pathetic.

Beads and bamboo.

Lol, but it wasn't. In those photos you linked that is layered plate steel with silk padding in between.

The Samurai eagerly sought after the all steel European armor in order to improve upon their own armor since it was so inferior. Especially cuirass pieces.

That's the first I've heard of that, and I've read a lot into this matter in the past (out of simple interest). Every source I've read comparing the two have placed the design of Samurai armor as slightly superior. In addition to the fact that Japan was completely shut off from the world for a while, it sounds a little hard to believe.

(P.S. where did you hear/read that?)

He heard it from the voices in his head.

Didn't you know? Douchegath regularly spouts random lies matter-of-factly.

How on Earth does Samurai armor come anywhere even near European Knight armor? The only people who would make such a ridiculous claim are ****** weeaboos. And Europeans have been visiting Japan for several hundred years. The Japanese couldn't get enough of their advanced armor and weaponary - their guns being the most widely recorded but also their armor as well.
