Well, the Olympic games are very much underway in Vancouver and Ming’s motherland isn’t faring too well. It seems 12-year-olds can’t bobsled or ski at an Olympic level, go figure.

Maybe that’s why he’s suspiciously gloat-free this Olympic season? Thank god; I don’t think I could have stomached one more self-righteous diatribe on how ruthless oppression of an entire nation, comprised of one and a half billion people, is somehow a good thing.

I cancelled Warcraft back in August and played Champions Online for three months before taking a break from the MMO scene. I bought Darksiders, Demon’s Souls and Mass Effect 2 and have loved every second of each of them. Demon’s Souls was a very fresh experience for me, the hardest game I’ve played since perhaps NES or SNES – and some of those were hard only because of control issues. Very rewarding and fun online play. Mass Effect 2 is simply mind-blowing. Awesome game, awesome story, hell of a lot of fun.

Console gaming is really catching up to PC gaming in quality – and the hardware pricing is hard to beat for the length of time these platforms produce games. I’ll be picking up a gtx260 and overclocking my q6600 to 3+ ghz in march or so to upgrade my rig, we’ll see if PC games can convince me to leave my console lovers.

I thought I'd see if anyone in the community wants to try out Google Wave, so I'll throw up my last two beta invites for grabs.

Rules for 'winning' them:

You must post in the comment section 20-50 words on why you want it and what you think would be cool to do with it. I'm putting this as a requirement because I think it will generate some new ideas for me and anyone else that uses it. Examples that others have done: trip planning with friends, pen and paper RPG groups, discussions and arguments with structure, etc.

That's a link to a short (7 minute) video explaining what Wave is and a few ideas of what you can do with it. Basically, here's what it is.

Email is a copy of a message sent out to multiple recipients. It functions like snail mail, but digitally. You can attach files and embed images.

Wave is basically "what email would look like if it were invented today and not 40 years ago". Instead of one message sent to multiple people, a central server hosts a message and all the Wavers with access can view, edit and contribute to it. It all updates live to all people involved and when you check back into a wave that has been changed, the changes are highlighted in the respective color of the person that did it (works like gmail's color tags in conversations, where the same person holds the same color throughout).

So tell me your ideas and plans and I'll pick the best two! Have fun.

Edit: I'll put a 24-hour deadline on this. Side note: I found the fat girl on the right hilariously overweight as well, try to ignore her fatness.

I went to MLG Dallas this afternoon for the finals and let me tell you: awesome. There were at least 30 people watching the finals, TOTALLY PACKED.

The final round was a blowout 6-1, great play with the new BM/enh/pal lineup. I haven't seen the comp run at top level yet and it was really fast. The damage output is over the top and I'm not sure I could even theorycraft a good reliable counter to it. When it was DK/War/Pal vs Beastcleave (tm) the warrior dropped like a sack of potatoes.

I'm posting this from my laptop on iPhone internet tethering because sadly the iPhone alone didn't support posting onto gameriot. I cried.

I have a lot of good pictures (quality sucks because there were two (2) fluorescent lights on in the WoW area. When you enter that cave, all photography becomes a chore without a flash on your camera. I will post these tonight when I get back home and get a chance.

I got back-of-the-head shots of Sodah, Celex, Woundman and a few others to spook them that I was that close. Stalker status: engaged.

Congratulations to all who played and I'm sorry I didn't get a chance to hang around and say hi to the big names. I pussed out and I regret not saying "Hi". Next time, fellas.

As a footnote, good plays by Sodah in the winner's bracket finals. He really did a great job of dmg/healing and outdamaged Woundman on the last round. Not bad for the disc priest.

Title says it. I haven't been to any pro gaming events, much less MLG and I don't know if there's an area the WoW players (known players) congregate.

Also, which day would be best to go? Saturday? Are the Warcraft matches played across the whole weekend or just on one day? I don't want to go out to the Hilton Anatole on a day that they aren't playing Warcraft.

I guess everyone doesn't want liquor or is under 21 - so I present the options I will have on hand:

Gentleman Jack. The smoothest sippin' whiskey anywhere.
Ketel One. Enough Said. Changing it up from Chopín.
Tito's Handmade Vodka. For celebratin'.
Crown for the sweet tooth: Crown/Coke is a standard.

Remember to buy all the offset, offspec PvP pieces you're able to with the extra Arena Pts you have left over (turning them into honor). The points evaporate on Tuesday and you can use the honor now. See you all at MLG.

Time Warner Cable, Warcraft on the river, MLG Dallas fast approaches

Our ****-tastic Netgear combo modem/router (why do they use these? they overheat and work poorly and because of that also have a short lifespan before they literally burn out and do not function) bit the dust this week and I groaned from my soul. I knew immediately how much of a hassle this would be to get someone out here to swap it with some other refurbed ****pile combo router. Those reading this should know the phone system for Time Warner Cable is located in the deepest layer of hell.

You can enter the correct telephone number and be told "not enough numbers entered, try again" multiple times in a row, with a maximum of two tries per phone call before disconnection. This leads to multiple calls where you have to go through, "To continue in English, press..." and, "If you are calling from your home line, press 1. If you are calling from another number, press 2..." before trying again and hoping sense prevails.

Anyway, I finally reached a real person after 20 minutes, he had severe blackinitis and could not handle entering my four digit pin code correctly. When I was a four-year-old I could remember my 4 digit street address, my ten digit telephone number, my grandparents' number and a few others. This agent couldn't hold 4 numbers in his head for the time it took to type them in correctly. He transferred me to another part of the department. Nothing was resolved, and here is my complaint letter that goes into the customer feedback for the black support agent to be seen by his boss, I assume:

(the 'support' was to unplug and replug in the modem and then they said they'd send out someone in 3 days. I am without internet and furious. I have work I do online daily for my Dad.)

I know how to reset my GD modem. Make it easier to reach an agent, local or otherwise, that can actually SOLVE AN ISSUE WITH LOSS OF INTERNET SERVICE. I am doing this from my iPhone because your phone support is so labyrinthine that I can't possibly reach the person necessary to resolve the issue. The one time I reached the correct department and an agent that wasn't incompetent (first one incorrectly entered our pin number twice and told us "it wasn't the correct one" and transferred us) she simply scheduled a cable worker to come out 3 days from now - making clear that if this was in any way "our fault" we would be charged a service fee. We pay $150+ a month for your services and your solution is to tell us to deal with it for 3 days, upon which time we might be fined.

I am not mentally handicapped and its clear how difficult you make it to solve your issues in order to minimize costs to an ascetic level. I need a new combo modem/wireless router (by the way good job on those, they're a COMPLETE bag of **** and you must have known that when you purchased them in bulk 5 years ago and have been refurbing them to your poor customers ever since) which can cost at most $15 out of your company's pocket.

You have lost a customer for life. I am getting married in January and would have had no reason to switch providers had this not happened. The moment we move in I am going with AT&T. Sure, your service is spotty and your cable cuts out from time to time but hey, most cable companies have issues like that. The way you retain customers is through your support and service departments. Your support system is an absolute medieval gauntlet. Tens of thousands of dollars in gross revenue from me over my lifetime is gone. If the only option in my area at any point is Time Warner Cable, I will install a satellite to avoid you.

Hope you go bankrupt.

I went down to South Texas last weekend for a friend's bachelor party and floated the Frio in Concan.

I have internet tethering on my iPhone and I briefly used it to sit on the bank of the river with my laptop to surf the web - until I realized how drunk I was and how bad an idea it was even sober. I even got onto WoW for a minute with the 3G running hot to keep me connected. Was a fun moment of pushing consumer-available technology to it's current limit. Nothing like running a daily quest a half mile from a power source and nowhere near a wifi connection.

Shooting Skeet (skeet skeet skeet), Life After Ironsoul, BG Experience

I thought I'd throw up an iPhone photo of myself shooting skeet and Texas-ing hard at an outdoor competitive shooting range. 19/25 that round, for those of you that follow. The gun's a Rem 1100 12gauge.

Warriors have always had a hard time for a variety of reasons (all linked to the synergy they have always had with healers) such as complete gear dependency, but once I got Ironsoul this weekend and a good set of gear, my warrior became almost a different class. Instead of slapping people with my wet, knobby noodle Titansteel Destroyer, I'm pressuring people much earlier and preventing those open seconds where healers start to cause problems. The more pressure you put out, the less time they have to cyclone/holy fire+smite/lava burst/etc. After 3 months at 80, I was about to lose my cool because I couldn't hit 1850 and thought I was too rusty to or maybe I wasn't that skilled.

Wrong.

The people I thought of as "hard teams" I see in a whole new light. They weren't outplaying me very often, they just put out more DPS pressure so my team had to play more defensively. Going defensive doesn't help put out any pressure so most of the games were uphill battles. Now I'm demolishing healers and pulling THEIR partners back over to try and peel me away.

That's the arena though, and since I'm saving up marks and honor again after buying something I've been in BGs since Friday just hitting people and suicide bladestorming clusters of horde for ****s and giggles. I had forgotten how differently people treat geared players in BGs. Before Friday, I looked at a glance like full hateful+titansteel destroyer to horde and wasn't an enormous threat (even though I had full s5/s6 gear with hateful shoulders). Now that I have Ironsoul, the honor grind is much more fun.

The other major change this week is BG experience gains. I got a level on my 71 lock Yesterday (Sunday) just sitting in AV and spamming seed of corruption when horde gets to Van. I cannot wait to get the char to 80 and have a full set of pvp epics waiting for me.

If I hit 2000 this week, I'll post my warrior's character name and armory. Until then...

As everyone settles into the new rhythm of farm Naxx, get tokens for Ulduar gear, progress to new content I find myself on the verge of 1850. Doing 1850 this late in the xpack with a Titansteel Destroyer and hateful/deadly gear isn't easy.

Who is going to be at MLG Dallas? I live in Dallas and I'm going to go with a friend just to bask in the pale glow of nerdrage at least once in my WoW lifetime. If you're going (and preferably 21) I'll be there with a flask of something.

I spent yesterday dicking around on all of my characters, leveling a lock a bit to 47, getting a level on my 64 DK, a level on Klynx and logged into my 70 druid and 70 warrior. I love the rogue class, every mechanic inherent to it from being unseen to the 1 second GCD to the control I have over opponents 1v1... but there is no way I'm going to level it 6 more levels to 80, much less gear her out, without being sure it is the class I want to sink that time into.

So put it to a vote:

Rogue

Druid

Warrior

Lock

Which one should I make my WotLK main? The lock is destro with 178 spell damage at level 47 and I'd probably play the **** out of that character at 80, I've always loved warlocks.

Side note: I am a music crazyperson. I cannot live a single day without having some time to myself for grooving on whatever new artist or tracks I'm into at the time. I literally cannot, I'll skip work early to get the time in or put on headphones at my desk and zone out for 20 minutes. A few days ago I saw Ray Lamontagne on Late Night (Conan's last or near the end, I think) and was floored. The guy is incredibly talented and his music has true soul.

Round 3 of x6 vs SK Gaming at ESL was an awesome watch. SK runs Pal/Shadowdance Rogue/DK and makes short work of x6's Pal/DK/Hunter setup.

What you need to watch for is the that isn't a sniper's rifle, they all get the job done.

I Reactivate, Servers Go Down

Well guys, I'm giving this stank old horse one last lap. Â I've reactivated my account for 60 days. Â I looked at my life and thought, "This is probably the last opportunity I'll have to play Warcraft, or any MMO for that matter, in my lifetime." Â At least with any dedication towards being geared and competitive.

I'm out of school.

I have a stable job.

I transformed girlfriend into fiancÃ© over Christmas.

I bought a Macbook Pro in December which lets me play in more flexible locations.

So I'll be back, initially on Archimonde to test out DK and play on my now-twinked rogue Klynx at level 70 in BGs. Â But it seems they heard me coming at Blizzard, within 12 hours of my reactivation the entire US server grid went down, presumably to make improvements in strength to deal with the power and intensity I bring every play session. Â Either that or I happened to join right before a hotfix patch.

Archimonde is full of new reroll names I don't recognize, transfers I don't recognize, DKs I don't recognize... I feel like the world has moved on (Dark Tower reference).

I'll blog occasionally while I play for these 60 days about things completely unrelated to class balance or Serennia (God rest his zombie bones) and try to entertain.

Here I stand waiting in line for login - welcome to Dark Crag.

I'm playing as Disciple of Khaine, name Bacchus. Â I reserved Daedalus and Klynx as well on the server, Destruction side. Â The character personalization screen is similar to WoW's, simple changes in hair style, color, eye color, skin color with some way to further personalize it, a la beard/piercings/tattoos/scars depending on the career.

I'll be on for a while tonight on Bacchus. Â Friend me and message me if you see me. Â Or kill me, either one. Â There will be another blog coming later this week with my impressions on balance and how solid the game feels after I have sufficient time to play it.

And only three or four servers have a wait time, I just chose Dark Crag because it will be the hotspot like everyone else. Â I'm itching to get in game, that's all.

If relentless strikes gets changed to 3/3 I will definitely play with this build in WoTLK. Â You get Adrenaline Rush, Blade Flurry, Dual Wield Specialization, Riposte, Mace spec for armor pen, relentless, ruthless, 4/5 seal fate, 2/2 of the new 4% dmg increase murder, cold blood, full 3/3 imp evis (for burst with CB), quick recovery, fleet footed, some poison talents and deadened nerves. Â It tops off the build's goal with nerves of steel as well.

The idea is top toe to toe efficiency with quick recovery and poison talents, using deadened nerves and nerves of steel to vastly cut incoming damage and burst on your rogue. Â Under a kidney shot, for example, you take . Â Very, very powerful talent tree right now, like Ming mentioned in his recent article.

Since 2v2 Arena is pretty much unanimously decided to be the best measure of a player's skill and the most balanced bracket, this is a good way to show how much better we are than anyone else.

There will be a second and third team in #2 and #3 with Kokoro's reroll Dwarf priest as soon as he grabs mainhand and one other piece starting again. The other will be Pangnim/Darksing or countless other pros on Archimonde.

The phone camera I took it with has different contrast and I can't obviously pose in the exact same position, also the lighting is different. But I think you can tell from the picture.

Now that's a real playground. Where are the monkey bars where kids broke limbs? The bridge that was too shaky and high and caused countless kids to fall off and bruise or cut themselves badly on an exposed bolt? Where are the slides that got dangerously hot in the sun?

I put this up inspired by Exitec's playground blog. All of this is pretty much lifted from 1000awesomethings.com but the nostalgia is too hilarious not to share with gameriot.

Maybe, without this natural selection for retards hidden in the playground equipment, we have allowed waterheads like TehJerk to grow to reproductive age? The very idea is horrifying. We could have stopped them.

Open Call To Hardware Gurus

My old desktop finally bit the bullet last night when it got a piece of malware that in conjunction with the partially removed malwares already on the system tipped it over the edge. Won't start, drivers are disappearing, switches to 256 color mode, etc. Also has a funny malware/virus that is like a screensaver and if I'm inactive for 5-10 minutes it brings up this screen that looks exactly like the Windows loading screen with the running blue progress bar with blocks that loop left to right. It closes on ctrl or alt keypresses so I can't find the process name before task manager comes up and it won't start if task manager is open as far as I can tell.

Anyway basically the computer was 5 years 8 months old and I'm okay with getting a new one and just /saluting the old one as it sails out the back of my car on the highway. All of my media, music, etc is on a separate hard drive I'll just load onto a new computer.

So I was shopping and catching up on hardware today and went to newegg and found this:

It seems like all the computer I'll need for anything other than the cutting edge (Crysis) games at high settings. It has Quad core duo 2.4ghz, 1066 FSB, a 512 MB 8600 graphics card and a 500 GB HD.

Only questions I have are:

I know since the RAM type isn't named it is most likely corsair cheapo RAM. Will 2 gigs be plenty for non-Crysis type games with this RAM? Ram upgrades are cheap down the line so this isn't really a factor.

The hard drive is 500GB but it has 8 MB buffer. Is that a huge difference in gaming performance from a 16MB buffer hard drive? I would assume it's noticeable in seek times on desktop stuff and load times but in game does it matter much?

And anything else anyone has to say on it would be appreciated. This model has no reviews yet but it's predecessor, the dual core 3ghz with 16mb buffer hd and an 8500 card got great ones for value and power.

The Life e-Casual Debut: This Weekend

This weekend, for those of you who haven't seen today's post by Roma Victor, I am becoming a sporadic contributor to ). I'm going to touch on new experiences with other classes I play, detail fitness and workout tips for life and fit them into the schedule of someone who doesn't go to the gym or have 2 hours a day to spare for working out. Or just doesn't want to work out for that long. I'll recap advanced ganking techniques and locations, show informative diagrams and screenshots of Cenarion Refuge from a griefer's point of view. I'll write on humorous topics and try to avoid the obvious glut of topics relating to how amazing I am at World of Warcraft or paying your mother to fellate me.

Most of all, it will be high quality writing with the Plebian King (or is it King of the Plebes?) Roma Victor's seal of approval. Check it out this weekend and in the weeks to come over on his blog.

If I have more topics to write about without developing them into fleshed out quality articles, I'll post them here.

Lastly, I finally got a hold of my season long druid partner off and on for 2s (we raised 3 teams to 1900 with 3-4 losses and then he'd disappear and I'd have to find a new partner) and he wants to get gladiator before the week is done. We played yesterday afternoon for a bit and went 20-3 with two disconnects on my retarded computer's side. I think this will be very plausible, only limited by how much time we can get together between now and monday night. Another rogue/druid from my server got to 2350 in a night, albeit with 4/6 T6 and another piece or two of PvE gear.

If I'm legitimately Vengeful Gladiator Klynx, will ***tion accept me? Will I join the annals of WoW veterans and join them in Valhalla when I shuffle off this mortal coil? My common sense points to "no" on both counts but only time will truly tell.

I'd just like to give credit where it's due and at the same time encourage those who don't do this to begin doing so.

Quoting what you are referring to in comments like this, in italics.

It seems so simple, doesn't it? Ctrl-C, Ctrl-V the text you are replying to, select it and ctrl-I. Voila, formatting that eases reading, keeps your replies from rambling as much, streamlines your responses, breaks up multiple responses to different parts of someone's writing, etc.

This has caught on all over Gameriot's regulars and I want to see it be the norm. It makes reading much more pleasant and raises the perceived maturity level (from 12 years old to 14 years old, but work with me, baby steps) for everyone.

Embrace the italics piecequoting. Follow Roma Victor's noble example. Be a beacon to the lowly unformatted masses.

My first thoughts are that the Assassination 51 point talent finally makes mutilate rogues able to fight mages and druids in conjunction with the new poison talents and consolidation of imp/vile talents.

Imagine dispelling root/nova off of yourself every time it hits you and then dealing 10-15% more damage when you get back into melee range.

That is going to kick ass. Add that to the 15% physical attacks reflection and you can also remove deep wounds/rend while 5-8 kiting a warrior who hamstringed himself and restealth without it breaking, reopening for 5-15% more damage, depending on how many stacks of the enrage you have. Not to mention reflecting executes or 5 pt eviscerates, etc.

I will finally be able to go daggers with my head held high. No perma kiting me anymore, ********!

I think 60/0/11 will be the way I go, not entirely sure though. Maybe I'll try to get it with 51/20/0 now that poison talents are consolidated so nicely.

This post has no point really other than to put this picture up and mention my S4 plans.

That is from over a month ago, I used a Malchazeen as my mainhand and S1 Shiv (agility enchant for passive AP instead of my S3 mace with mongoose). It's in world pvp, no buffs from other classes, no zerking. I can't imagine what I would do with S4 gear and S4 MH dagger. I'll probably grab MH Dagger and sword and offhand sword.

I mean seriously, being able to one shot fresh level 70s and two shot ones with 9.5k life and low resilience consistently? That's more fun than I can reasonably say no to. And mutilate's pretty strong now, maybe I can find a good priest to 2s with as combat mut. Whatever, I'm stream-of-consciousnessing, that's all I had.

Looks like what I would imagine in a pre-BC paladin set if I saw it with no context. This is probably the skin from the PvE tier 7 equivalent it shares a model with but still - the model looks 0% roguelike. Notice the helm looks like a sad basset hound with droopy sad eyes and frowny mouth.

Onto the S3 maces:

A very boring, Siphon of the Nathrezim-ish look that doesn't look like a progression from the S3 maces in prestige.

Which looks totally hardcore and badass and unique. I don't want to downgrade my top end when I move to S4. I want to keep UPgrading damage in my weapons. INCREASING my potential RNG burst.

The 2h greatsword looks like a logical 2H version of the 1H s4 model, and is suitably cool looking.

I think the dagger skins are too bright but the model is promising:

The skin makes it look like a caster dagger.

Anyway, all of these pictures are old from MMO Champion but since I first looked at them when they were released they haven't been changed so it looks like most of them are here to stay. Obviously some of the sets have the duplicate models and are placeholders, but which ones are actually using these cruddy models is unclear. The entire rogue armor set, as well as 1h maces, are totally not cool. Barring a total overhaul, this will be a disappointing look change for my class.
