In IXX century private compannies had built railroads throughout US - just because there was demand for this - and they were working great untill better means of transportation had been introduced. (That was the time when US gov created AMTRAK - you know, perfect timing as always). 

Goverment can only chose wrong technologies, pay for them six time the price, create corruption opportunities (this, by definition, exist only in junction between gov. an private organizations) and stop innovations. (Why there have been so many innovations in US? Isnt it because there is NO government support for creativity in US - contrary to european countries?)

And btw VIR - public healthcare sucks - you can believe me  - we've been there (theoretically, socialist state COULD have the strongest healthcare (or virtually any other economic branch) in a world, by spending all of their funds on this particular branch: we dont have cars, computers, pens (and billion other things) - but we have three doctors per man - but still it never worked well in any country). USSR tried this approach with their army - they failed: soldiers also need cars, computers and bilion other things which only free market can effectively produce.
